I have read something similar to your idea from Joseph Campbell - A Hero with Thousand Faces; he says that spirit is the psychology of the age in which we inevitably find ourselves, and there is no turning back to the preceding stages of our lives . So the whole argument above is also analogous to the stages of the life of the individuals .

Considering Campbell's travels to Asia and particularly his studies of Zen Buddhism in Japan, this connection would make sense. The stages of the lives of individuals exhibit this sense of spirit as well of course, as you correctly observe. For an interesting view of these concepts look into Bushi no Me, and it's composite parts Nikugen - Naked Eye, Tengen - Neutral Perspective, Egen - Interpretive Sight, and Shingen/Hogen - Compassionate Eye/Law Sight. I think you may find that topic interesting.
