Hey guys! In today's video, I wanted to talk about how much nurse practitioner's make, and four factors which can help you determine how much you can make in your specific location and practice setting.
I don't think money should be your only factor in considering becoming a nurse practitioner, but it definitely is an important aspect to keep in mind! It can be challenging finding the right answers online. Hopefully this video can give you some clarity!

Very important video so new grads don't accept the low ball offers that are currently offered (75-80k/year). I don't care where you live, NP's should be grossing 100k minimum given the liability that comes with this profession. You are essentially doing part of a physicians job for less 2-3x less the money, so should be compensated accordingly.

Please please get experience as a nurse first. The nurses that go back to graduate school so quickly with only 1-2 years nursing experience look vastly unprepared and quite frankly, lost. I’d recommend 3-5 years. Please consider this! Best of luck

I am so excited!!! I am in ems. 4 years experience. I will be working on my paramedic next year (10 month program) for more experience and better pay. Then I will work on my BSN while working as a Paramedic. Then I will be doing my NP while working as a nurse. I am fortunate to to live in the city of MCG/GRU/AUMC (one of the oldest medical schools in the SE and quite competitive; it's easier to get into MUSC in Charleston then at AU) and I interact with the MD and NP there giving report on patient care, and they are who I am attending my paramedic program with, as well as where I will be attending for my nursing and hopefully my NP. This video was very informative.

I appreciate the honesty when it comes to salary. You are absolutely right that salary shouldn't be the only factor - but it shouldn't be completely disregarded due to the time, effort, and investment you will be making as a student (not to mention the responsibility you will take on as a NP). I have been on the fence about going back to school to become a NP. The job itself is something I have always wanted to do, and the high salary is also very rewarding, BUT the one thing I love about nursing is my job flexibility and freedom it provides me. I am such a free spirit - so the thought about being tied down to school for 2+ years is discouraging on its own, not to mention I am worried I will be chained down as an ARNP. Can any NPs give me any insight on this? Will I still have freedom & scheduling flexibility as a NP? This is probably the factor that is holding me back the most.

@Isaac Figueroa after obtaining your BSN in nursing, it's normally ideal to get some experiences as a bedside nurse. It'll make it easier on yourself when you're in the MSN or DNP-NP program. Experiences goes a long way and will make you a more competent provider. Some NPs that doesn't have those experiences tend to have a rougher time adjusting to a new role. That's only my opinion. There are exceptions. Good luck on your journey!

I noticed your Cardiac designation. I am having difficulty finding information on how you become fnpc. Schools here in Colorado don't offer a "quote" cardiaciovascular certification, they are all geri/adult MSNs or FNPs

MrNurseInColorado hey! So FNP-C actually stands for family nurse practitioner - Certified, not cardiovascular! This is the AANP’s delegation, whereas ANCC is “FNP-BC”. As far as cardiovascular certification, you probably can’t find much information because it’s not very common or required by most places. Most cardiology practices will accept an FNP, AGPCNP, or an ACNP and train them. There is some info on cardiology certifications for NPs here (although I definitely haven’t heard of these being used frequently) midlevelu.com/blog/cardiology-certifications-nps-dont-require-another-degree

In California, bedside RN's in acute care setting make $100-$120k ... Is the extra stress of becoming an NP and getting payed the same even worth it at that point.

Rathor916 there are some NPs, depending on their location and experience level as a nurse, that initially may take a small pay cut or make around the same. However, the potential for higher income is usually much more. According to Glassdoor, the average salary for NPs in San Francisco is 155,000, and LA 144,000. So I’d argue that becoming an NP is an investment regardless. But becoming an NP shouldn’t only be about the money. You have a real opportunity to practice medicine and make a huge impact in your patients lives. If you find yourself not thinking the stress is worth it, then maybe it really isn’t worth it for you. IMO, bedside nursing (especially in acute care) is VERY stressful, has crappy hours, work every other weekend and holidays, and is physically demanding. I consider my NP job to be much less stressful.

Carol Lai that’s a great question! For me - nursing was never my “calling”. It kind of fell into my lap last minute and the idea of being an NP seemed great so I went for it. As I learned more about nursing I fell in love with the field of nursing and medicine. Does it have to be a “calling” that you knew you wanted to be a nurse since you were 6? No! But you should be able to find some enjoyment and/or fulfillment in the job. But if you don’t like your job as a nurse - there are so many other specialties and settings you may like more. The reason people say that is because nursing is HARD. You are going to work for 12 hours Straight, often night-shift (at least starting out), you’re going to get crap (both literally and figuratively), and you’re going to be expected to juggle a million things at once. It’s difficult at first - but also SO rewarding. So you really do need to have some type of personal fulfillment or yearning for knowledge in order to enjoy it. Then again.. plenty of people hate their jobs in all fields, but you will always be guaranteed plenty of job opportunities as a nurse (location dependent). Good luck!

Reno Cheshire so APN stands for advanced practice nurse. That is New Jersey’s designation for a nurse practitioner. Other states may call it CRNP, APRN, etc. So this implies my state license. I am, however, FNP certified, which is my national certification as a family nurse practitioner. Does that make sense?
