Hmm, so I thought about why this bothered me, and decided I was wrong. My initial reaction was that he had stripped all the naughtiness out of it. It had neither the dark insinuation of Joel Grey or the flat-out lewdness of Alan Cumming, so I thought "What the hell am I watching?". But... what he is introducing isn't that kind of show. What he's introducing and is the MC of is a "big show" for family audiences, and that's exactly what his interpretation augurs, so it works for what it is. He's doing the best he can with the framework he was given.

AWCMCultMoviies I always saw it as big show with the underlying themes that reveals itself through the play I always found Joel and Alan had both wonderful takes in the same character and as you said wonderful direction I feel as though this really could work Maybe not necessarily big show but I always say the over the top ragtime for the bittersweet ending

It's too bad Sean Connery never played the Emcee in "Cabaret." Oh well......
