The gasket shines on a run of pipe which has even surfaces, as you demonstrated. But silicone self-adhesive tape works best where the gasket doesn't - at a joint where pipe and connector(s) meet and surfaces are different heights and even unlike materials. I like to stretch-wrap in one direction. Then with a second piece stretch-wrap in the opposite direction, like gluing two pieces of wood together with opposing grains, making it doubly strong. An unstretched wrap to cover the job doesn't hurt at that point. I've had these repairs last months if out of direction sunlight. I live on a farm with 75 yo 1/2-1" galvanized plumbing, so have been replacing as it breaks. Silicone tape has saved me lots of money and kept the water flowing. Thanks for a great video!

It worked, clear generic silicone tape, on a leaking oil cooler line that has up to 65psi of hot oil in it. It was leaking 1 quart every 200 to 300 miles and now it's leaking none. 350 miles later of mountain, Interstate, and town driving. Used 2 hours of time (half was cleaning hose) and a $7 10' roll of silicone tape that I wanted to test. Took about 30" of clear tape to do one end of the hose while on the car. I prefer the clear as it allows me to see through it. I developed a technique to do it in tight space. Gave it 3 overlapping layers in a different pattern. Straight wrap, diagonal, then straight again. Any pattern works but important to have different seal points of different wrapping and do it as tight as you can, with space provided. Also important to squeeze and rub firmly on it to get each layer to fuse for 5 minutes or so before the next layer and the final layer. If it's higher than 65psi I would also place single double wrapped pieces directly over the leak, for extra strength material before the first layer of the 3 wraps. Or wrap it 4 times.

Quinn, I just wanted to say "thank you". Grabbed a single sheet of red gasket from Ace hardware, worm clamp, and it's been holding for three days now. Next step, replace copper supply tubing with PEX using PTC connectors. 😊

The clamp approach worked for me this evening. Had a hard time finding the rubber gasket material. I ended up at Harbor Freight and bought a $3.99 hand-truck rubber inner tube and cutting it to size. So far, it's working on our pin hole in a copper pipe that connects our house to the water main pipe. No leaks...knock on wood! Thanks.

I would also like to thank you for the gasket and hose clamp solution. I just got the stuff for it, and now the pinhole in my basement is (temporarily) fixed. All the wet and moldy drywall on the other hand...

The gasket and hose clamp method saved my bacon. Pinhole leak in 1/2" copper. Held beautifully for 4 months until I could fix with Pex and Shark bite brass couplings. Had no money for plumber and needed time to learn how to correctly couple Shark bite with copper and Pex. I'm confident the gasket and hose clamp would have held much longer if needed. Super Helpful video!

Question: I've read reviews where this works excellent for hot water pipes. I have a drip lead at a joint before my water meter. [The water main feed and I can't turn off the water unless it's done by the water co.] If I cleaned the joint and pipe well , but let the water run on a sink to release pressure, then heated the pipe with a hot air gun; would that increase the chances of it working to stop the leak?

I have come to confess my sins as a home owner and landlord in the poverty stricken city of Tucson. I've been using old automotive heater core hose and automotive hose clamps for 40 years to stop leaks in galvanized pipes. Many of those patches have lasted 40+ years!! I know it's not a good idea for drinking water. However I never drink our city's tap water and few do. It's just not safe ever and especially since they put us on CAP water and accelerated all the rust in pipes city wide. In the future I will probably go with the patch you have recommended. But these temporary patches can last for decades. In Tucson you can probably expect to see more leaks appearing and a re-pipe job in your future. Well done video !!

Our main is controlled by the city (live in central europe) so cant shut it off. our main in our house - is leaking - flooding the floor. * Its coming from the seems of the pipe where they join and from the turn knob itself. (messed up) Used caulking, etc. and it just spread it around - i have about a liter of water every 2 hours and cant get it to stop. we have like 1 guy in our city and hes booked till next year, essentially - emergency or no. (this country is a bit 'crazy' with things like this) * also, dont have all the items you have stateside. I even tried soldering it - no good, destroyed the gun right away. drip - drip... then drips after you try caulking/taping, etc. im at a loss, shutting it down, still drips a little (from in the house - and we cant use the toilet or anything then) any adivce??? thanks! Looks to be iron pipe - old as can be and coroded down in the city part where its 4 feet underground in a man hole) But for our pipe its just at the seems and turn knob its leaking.

Makes sense, car hoses withstand great pressures, keep them fresh with good quality tire foam or other conditioners and maybe replace every 10 years or so. If you an old wrench hand you can tell by the feel when hose is getting weak("that's what she said").

For my grand father, he alway used to fix (rusted iron pipes) leaked pipes with all kind of material useable as "gasket". Let's just say i have never been a fan of that unless the patch is permanently visible & accessible. I rather change a leaking iron pipe than give it a band-aid because it's just asking for it to leak somewhere else once again.

Man I bought an apartment in a building with a central heating system and I saw one of these clamps on a pipe in my bedroom. I found out that it was there for years, a plumber told me not to touch it, but I wanted to permanently repair that. I don't know if they have just placed a rubber underneath or if they have applied something else beforehand. I am basically waiting for it to burst at some point, lol.

What if you have a leak at the edge of a fitting such as an elbow or even a shutoff valve? I don't see how to use the gasket kit unless the leak is at least a 2 or 3 millimeters from the fitting but would the compression tape work?
@stevenbeebe35
@stevenbeebe35 3 жыл бұрын
I have done plumbing for 20+ years as a landlord. NO... none of these tape repair kits will handle an elbow joint. The water pressure is no just leaking out the side. The water pressure is basically trying to remove the elbow joint. You will have to sweat the pipe on with lead + solder.
