My first question would be !!!! Why in gods name would the mechanic do all kinds of work on the van knowing there was engine issues . I mean it makes no sense at all fix the engine so it’s running then do ball joints . Pads breaks ect ect ect . I’m honestly so confused to why this was done . It’s like your dr telling you you need a triple heart bypass and then going and getting a hair transplant and Botox . So £1300 spent on a mechanic to still have a van that dont work sorry but that’s a bit wrong that in my opinion also morally wrong to take some one’s money knowing that the engine still runs that bad . Not saying you been had off but it kind of looks like you been had off

I have to say, as soon as i heard the boys voice(the seller), i'd have been looking elsewhere. Right away he sounded dodgy. When you asked if there was any oil leaks, that 'no,no,no,no,no,no...' is all you needed to hear.

This is bringing back so many memories of my 54 transit tourneo. I had to be towed twice, the injectors needed replacing and it would just cut out and die. The key constantly needed reprogramming, the water pump went, it leaked oil, and after paying a fortune to have those things fixed. It started to go into limp mode, and eventually, the rust was too bad to fix.

Your experience has reinforced my impression of buying a vehicle off Facebook Marketplace. The solar panel did really well to stay on that long. I was half expecting it to be the fan or roof vent lid that had flown off as you've fitted them the wrong way round with the hinge to the back. You can get a couple of clips for the Heki roof vent to stop it being opened from the outside.

In another van-life series that I used to watch. Their van had a single large bed, but would need to briefly handle more folks than could be accommodated in the sleeping accommodations. Simple solution - they hung hammocks from the ceiling of the van during the night times. During the day, the hammocks were put away - allowing the full usage of the van. A set of simple hooks in the ceiling were the only "permanent" features - with the hammocks stored in the "garage" of the van. Maybe this idea could help you. Great videos! Very much enjoyed both you and your brother!!

The Injectors are toast causing rich fuel to air mixture causing excessive smoke. If it isn’t that which I’d be surprised, it could be the MAP sensor or the oil return pipe for the Turbo not draining of causing the turbo to leak oil into the exhaust manifold. But I’ll put money on the injectors; loss of power, excessive smoke and the engine looked juddery and sounded tappy.

I need to find a van. I don’t camp because I don’t like sleeping in a tent. Even something simple would be better then sleeping on the ground and you wouldn’t have any worries of someone invading your privacy in a tent. I would advise to replace the oil pump on that transit because the turbo went and the timing chain went and it has done 200k after the oil pump has been changed and I would check that the DPF isn’t blocked and check the inter cooler isn’t full of oil after that van is good for thousands of miles more

circular saw straight line tip, measure distance from your blade to the outer edge of the guide, draw another straight line that distance away from the cut line, then clamp a nice straight piece of wood along the new line, you can then run the outer edge of the saw guide along that piece of wood for a perfectly straight cut

Unlucky that the Amazon didn't work out, especially with the time crunch you initially had. Take this as a lesson learned; you've got to plan better (give yourself a reasonable amount of time to shop around and build it out-rushing things is never good, mistakes happen, and the job quality won't be as good). The silver lining is you didn't sink any more time and money into a lemon of a van (you were in the infancy stage of the build-out). Next time, take your mechanic with you when viewing potential vans to buy (so they can assess the van before you buy it on the spot). To save costs, just take your mechanic to inspect vans that are at the top of your list. But I'm glad Mary was the lifesaver for your trip!

When you can’t open the door with the key fob it means the internal battery has gone flat, just use the key to open the door with the lock on op the outside, like your dad used to lol. Most transits like that have two batteries, one for the electronics, and one for the engine. But as others have said, as soon as I’d have found it was a Romanian, I’d have bailed, they have their reputation for a reason.

when the key fob dies put the key in the drivers side door and turn it twice to the right that will unlock all the doors if locked inside the van there is a lock on the doors opening latch for the front door lol. The side sliding door does have a lock of its own that can be opened gently with a screwdriver.

I think it was sucking oil into the engine and it could have run away. Lucky it didn't, a runaway diesel is not funny. The mechanic should have told him it was a waste of time fixing anything on that van the state it was in. Just good money after bad being wasted.

Probably a turbine went bad. Explains loss of power, smoke and revving by itself. My brother had that runaway diesel problem, luckily he could stop the engine in 5th gear with breaks.

Make sure that cable you got running from the power station to your fuse board is rated enough for all the things your going to fit! That cable your using there looks to small to cover the amp rating of the fridge, fan, lights etc etc.

Will. It was good to see you give it a go, but I think you made the right decision in taking Mary. It'll be interesting to see if you do anything with the other van, it might be something simple to fix. If you can fix it cheaply then you could get it to the stage where you could sell it as a basic camper for someone else to finish the work as they want to. At least you'll get some money back. If the van build is a fail then before the euros then on a plus point you can take your time in fixing it when your back and taking your time with it to mend it.

That problem with the engine is serious, the head gasket is blown. that is why its leaking oil and has a bluish white smoke, remember guys diesel exuste is black! Another serious problem it causes is the engine to run away, meaning that it will rev past the limiter and may explode because of the oil leaking into the cylinder acting like a (uncontrolled) second source of fuel.

That level of white smoke is be thinking head gasket 🤷 but then when the van revved itself like that I'd be thinking turbo seals and it's running on the oil from the turbo.... Considering that sketch guy "changed the turbo" very likely 😢 good luck on your trip

I paid £2800 for my van pre-covid and that was cheap back then imho. Am I wrong but I can't imagine it's possible to get a van for less than that which wouldn't come with a load of problems at the moment.

Yep I agree, I think any van you buy for the price I did would also have some issues. This one just had major problems

Good idea with the Mary option, don't really think its work getting a crap van then put all the effort and money to convert it into a camper. Its either fix the thing or waste the other bits from the build. Be cool if you got 2 estate cars and done like rival builds like top gear done in Africa with the episode where they go looking for the source of the river Nile.

Ahh gutted for the Transit. Guessing the seller didn’t get a proper job done when replacing the turbo, hence it running away with itself. Scary times when that happens.

You can just twist off MC4 connectors so you don't have to cut, strip, reconnect and heat shrink the cables 😅

Mate, a harsh lesson toearn from. Hopefully you can find a way to recoup some of the cost. How come you didn't take Mary in the first place?? You could have used the money to upgrade Mary more. Anyway... Look forward to the next video
