Willys Jeep Grill Wall Art - Pt 1

This is Pt. 1 of a three part series on how to build the ultimate piece of man cave wall art! It's a WWII era Willys jeep grill, complete with working headlights and running lights!
The model is surprisingly dimensionally accurate to the real Willys jeep. It was drawn using Sketchup to create paper templates to use to cut out the pieces.
This is a complex project but pocket hole joinery made it a fairly straight forward assembly process.

Original manufacture of the jeep was Willys-Overland (Hence the name Willys Jeep). The first jeep (put in service by the military) was given the name GP-General Purpose vehicle. The name Jeep was actually a misconception in itself but shortly after the introduction of the GP, a huge demand by the general public for jeeps for civilian use arised. In response, John Willys (Owner of Willys-Overland) ordered the manufacture and sale of of civilian use jeeps and called them the CJ (Civilian Jeep). But to clarify, Willys is actually pronounced like "Willis" rather than "Willeez" or "Willies".

Very cool Vids btw. I pulled a CJ-5 grill from my local junkyard and I am currently doing this project. Just made the wiring harness and now I'm just waiting on my LED's. Super excited to hang this thing in the shop!

I'm loving your videos and this one is great! I had a thought about your top and bottom rails... instead of having separate templates you could probably just drill a row of evenly spaced holes with a hole saw, then cut the board across the middle of the holes to have the top and bottom rails. Does that make sense? It works in my head but I haven't done it so I'm not sure.
