One BIG thanks for sharing with us your thought on compositions, greatly appreciated. Also that picture of the boy holding the rope...good job, I love it!! About the first picture from Malick with all the people, one thing I really like in its composition is the curved line created by the leg of the young man on the right, I think, even though is so far on the right, he adds a lot to this picture.

Another thing with the fish picture that I like a lot is the way it goes from dark in the bottom right corner to bright in the upper left corner, and the main subject fish is also headed in that direction. But I guess that’s more lighting wise and not composition. Also the chair picture is awesome, and I learned lots about composition from your explanation on that one. I always find it hard composing subjects like that

Great job explaining things in a straightforward way for people new to photography or those wanting to improve. I'm glad you made a point of mentioning with your fish photograph that sometimes the composition is by chance, and that under certain circumstances you get lucky. I think it's important for beginners to understand that not everything can always be controlled, but for this reason it's important to have mastery over your gear, process, and fundamental skills. That way everything that can be controlled is controlled, improving your odds of getting the desired result. On another note, despite its lack of popularity among many photographers, shooting in a 1:1 aspect ratio is probably the best way to improve mastery of composition. A square is inherently static, and must be activated intentionally through framing, subject placement, etc. It's something I learned while studying graphic design in college, and the reason I recommend this to anyone looking to improve their compositional skills. As you also mentioned in the video, most if not all principles of graphic design (and any other visual medium for that matter) apply to photography (and vice versa). For those with the interest, it can be worthwhile to do a bit of study of graphic design to help understand overlapping concepts in photography. Thank you for your continued production of quality, enjoyable, and informative content. Hope you have a nice holiday.
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick! A whole bunch of my nicest compositional images have been by pure luck haha, one does have to be in the situation trying to make something of course but the more you shoot the luckier you get lol! Good tip on the 1:1 aspect ratio too, I'm keen to shoot some more square stuff again at some point if the right situation arises, or I end up owning a Hasselblad haha Glad to hear that someone who studied graphic design saw what I was getting at when I was talking about that too! Thanks so much for enjoying things, I hope to continue progressing the standard of the videos going forward , and I hope you have a lovely holiday as well!

Very insightful video Will! It's great to hear your take on composition in yours and other's photographs. I do believe that composition is the most important thing to creating compelling photos or artwork. The photo of the boy with the rope and the point on tension or space between the subject and the frame is an important one and seems that it can either make or break the image. I certainly don't think about it enough in my own photos, so this is a good reminder. It reminds me of the basic art school figure-ground exercises you can do with a white piece of paper (ground) and a couple black shapes (figure), and how by moving those around on the paper you can explore how proximity of figures to each other, or figures to the ground, can create tension, balance, or weight in a composition. It's been a while, I should do this exercise again! The photo at 8:27 is an interesting one and reminds me of the 17th century Dutch group portraiture of Rembrandt and his use of the gaze to create compositional and social hierarchy within an image, as well as the relationship of all the figures around the main subject to the main subject. In doing so you're able to clearly tell who the "most important person" is in the paintings, and there is so much narrative to unpack in paintings; rather than just being pictorial representations they are quite astute commentaries on the social hierarchy of the subjects. He was able to reinvent the "stiff" and "flat" group portraits of prior, where all subjects were placed in relative order and all looking towards the viewer (camera) into dynamic compositions just by having subjects look in different directions in the painting to tell a story. This was also done with the positioning of the bodies, pointing of arms, and the use of light and shadow. There are so many tools to composition, I often find it a bit overwhelming and am unsure which direction to take it in the moment!
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you man! It's key to making a photo stand out for sure! I like the sound of that art school exercise, will have to give it a go sometime myself haha! Very cool that the Sidebe shot reminds you of Rembrandt, seeing his stuff in the Rijks museum was transcendent, I love paintings and it's quite apparent why he's seen as a master when one sees the paintings in person! Need to spend some more time looking at paintings I reckon, making photos appear painterly in their execution is always a great goal! I reckon rather than getting too caught up in the theories and tools of it all just going and making some things and seeing where they succeed/fail is the best strategy to move forward in your own work!

Great video William, very helpful and useful. Your analysis of some of the photos is competent and insightful. Although, I think it is very important to also look for what is wrong in a composition. Seeing all these dog pictures made me think about Joel Sartore who has done thousands of species photos. I think the way he composes his shots is really effective at bringing out the personality of each individual animal and I realise now that what I think is so effective at highlighting the animals and their individual personalities is the fact that he uses these simple either black or white backgrounds and so it’s sort of like a sticker/collage as you said. Great video as usual 😁

@@willysheepskin as a photography student, your videos are perfect for me. I just found out today (after paying for scans) my college has an imacon so I’ve been rewatching your video on it and I can’t wait to spend hours and hours scanning my negatives. Fingers crossed Lady Luck decides she’s a fan of Scotland!

Thank you! this video was so helpful for me, I'm doing a photography degree and really struggle to talk about my own work and compositions but I've learnt so much from watching your videos this year and built a lot of confidence and reassurance to what I want to do regarding photography so I wanted to say thank you! I hope you keep making videos like this because they're gold! you've also opened my eyes to South Africa and its charms, I really hope to visit one day and hope you do photography meet up sometime, Happy End of year from London :)

Ah I'm honored to hear that my videos could help! I struggled with my degree too, felt like I wasn't being told things I was interested in hearing a lot of the time lol! I hope you get to visit too, actually met up with a viewer from America this morning and went on a dawn patrol expedition haha! Happy end of year from Cape Town!

Thank you for these insights and your thoughts! I really loved the dog photos - because I know how hard it is to get a right picture of mine :D but this inspired me to try and maybe get some nice shots with him! You sure did a good job and expanded my view on composition :) Well done, William!

This makes me want to immediately go back through my own work and see where i couldve improved compositionally, or where i am able to find some of these points. I am very much a snapshot shooter but im really trying to slow down and take more time when i know the scene is worth it. Thanks for this, as always. Cheers.

The squiggly thing in the first photo you talked about is called a pool vacuum! Its used to suck the dirt out of the bottom of pools so when people swim in them they're not questioning how pools stay clean all the time. My pool vacuum actually looks exactly like the photo you took most of the time. This was an insanely interesting video, I love the insight you're presenting to us and the examples you're giving, especially as some new to film and to photography in general. A lot of things that I'll be keeping in mind from now on. Thanks for the photographer suggestions also. I'm now convinced that, with all the photos here, I should give BnW a shot, it seems so timeless. I wonder how Jack Davidson made that one dog photo. I try to photograph my german shepherd sometimes and he always wants to bite my camera.

Ohhh I see, we call them Kreepy Kraulies (Creepy Crawly's) here for some reason haha! So glad that you found things interesting, I hope the info proves useful going forward! I definitely reccomend shooting black and white, it's wonderful in it's own way. I too would love to know how most of these dog photos came to be, they never want to comply when I try photograph them haha!

This was a really valuable lesson, and also introduced to me some photographers that I'd never heard of! Quick question: have you ever thought about a video every now and then where subscribers send an image to you, post-processed or not, and you can "critique" it?

Glad it helped Alp! Stoked to have shared some work with you too, I have considered a video like that for sure just not sure if I’d want to critique individual images as opposed to bodies of work since often single images aren’t really representative of someone’s body of work at large. Will have a think on it though!
