The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Thanks for posting. This show is from Oct 18, 1959 which is only a few days before Wilt played in his first regular season NBA game. On Oct 24, 1959, Wilt's Warriors played the Knicks in NY and Wilt scored 43 pts, grabbed 28 boards, and played all 48 min in the Warrior victory.

If I'm not wrong, he had 17 blocks as well in his debut.

@@emeanuele According to the great biography on Wilt, "Wilt: Larger than Life" by Robert Cherry, "He scored 43 points and had 28 rebounds, was 17 for 27 from the field and 9 for 15 from the foul line and blocked, according to the news accounts of the game, about a dozen shots. (Blocked shots did not become an official NBA stat until the 1973-74 season)"

Wilt quit college(Kansas) after his junior year, but the NBA did not allow players to be drafted until their class graduated, so he played for the Globetrotters for 58-59 season.

Glad Wilt wasn't condemned to a clowning circus act his whole life, and we got to see the marvelous athleticism of the man.

Same here. Wilt credited the Trotters for a lot of his ball skills.

@@nicholasschroeder3678 I heard that too. I think I heard Wilt say that in an interview. I wouldn't be surprised, either way. He talked like he treasured his time with the Globe Trotters.

@@wmden1 Yeah, he did. Maybe he had a lot of fun. He wasn't getting beat up night after night with triple teams. The slam on Wilt was that he wasn't competitive enough and came up short in the big games--just a stat padder, lacked grit, was selfish, and so forth. I suspect there's a bit of truth to it. I can't imagine Bill Russell being happy on the Trotters--he was just too competitive and proud. Wilt's fondness for the time makes me think that he conceived of himself as an athletic performer for pay: put up big numbers and put on a great show for the crowd and collect a handsome paycheck. His compulsive partying and womanizing, his threat to quit after the first season because of all the rough handling, his threat to bolt to the ABA, his stunt to fight Ali, his constant conflicts with coaches--it all makes me think that he was more committed to Wilt than the NBA, and that championships just weren't his first priority. He was an athletic businessman. I don't count it against him. I almost admire him for it: he got the money, the white women, his palace by the ocean--the things he really wanted--and he did it all coming up through a racist NBA. He was definitely his own man and squeezed 100 lives out of one.

@@nicholasschroeder3678 I think you have it pretty well right, though I don't fully agree with everything. I am sure he did want to win, he just thought that if he performed like he did, most of the time, he should win, and he did, just not many of the big ones. If I were a coach, I wouldn't mind a stat padder, especially on rebounding, which he still holds the record on, with Russel coming a close second. I would want him to listen to me and do what I said, though. It is kind of funny; In these videos and what I watched of him real time, he could do some fantastic things, but he almost always looked like he was on cruise control. A little more intensity wouldn't have hurt, but he did have to play a lot of minutes per game. Six of one, and half a dozen of the other.

No diss on Wilt but he bar was so much lower back then. And they had functional families and institutions to support them. Less complexities to deal with. A large middle class. More human interactions with more socially adept people. Very limited screen time - all TV. The black players had to deal with some real bullshit though.
