I don't think it's about him not playing the media's game and more about how the media wanted to make sure that more recent stars were remembered as the NBA became more profitable. Marketing modern stars means that they can market a modern style of play. Had they marketed Wilt, people would tune in and see a completely different game than what Wilt was playing.

Now, Jordan, Harden, James, these guys are international celebrities. The NBA wants the focus to be on these guys being the greatest, because they're bringing in the money. Greatest of All Time, Greatest Scorer, etc, etc, these are marketing terms to the NBA. They want them attached to modern players whose jerseys they are selling, whose game resembles our current style the most, and whose games they have lots of good tape of.

Actually his block shot high was 26! On March 18, 1968, Chamberlain had 24 in the game where he set the official NBA record for highest scoring Triple-Double. Blocks & steals weren't "official stats" until 1974, but news accounts confirm that it was actually a Quintuple-Double. Wilt had 53 Points, 32 Rebounds,14 Assists, 24 Blocks, 11 steals !!!

Also, players back then had cramped cabisn on planes, harder schedule for travelling, medical recovery equipment was not as good. You didn't get paid if you were injured. Just the food and nutrition and medicine alone let alone the recovery methods they have to day. There would be a big difference to the body.

I am currently reading the somewhat obscure first book by Bill Russell "Go Up for Glory" and found the following relevant seeing as this video was just released. The first time Russell starts talking about Wilt in the book and dives in their head-to-had battles, he almost instantly remarks: "Chamberlain's physical power is awesome. I'm amazed Wilt is never mentioned as anybody but a dunking machine. As a teenager, I listened at night to my favorite NBA team, the Baltimore Bullets. My radio was a $5.00 hand built crystal radio set. The Bullets would of course play Wilt's team - the San Francisco Warriors. Wilt's primary shot was a fadeaway from about 12 to 14 feet from the left side of the court. He was just about automatic. That was his go to shot. Where the story came from that he just dunked is beyond me. Wilt is The GOAT in my opinion.

I saw Wilt play a very few times as a kid....he was more than amazing! But, he didn't win and he despised the press.....so he was almost blackballed! It still carries today! He was AMAZING! Had he not joined the Lakers where they didn't need him to score....he would have easily had 40,000 points! I remember a game in 1973 (I think) the Lakers were coming to Phoenix and the Suns were pretty good then as they Had Connie Hawkins, Dick VanArsdale and some other young talented players. The press was VISCOUS to Wilt....saying he was washed up....and couldn't score anymore....and survived on just his size. The Suns and Hawkins were going to DESTROY the Lakers! Wilt scored 63 that night! When interviewed after the game....the reported asked his....why the big offensive explosion....his response...."Don't ever piss off the big fella! Lastly, Jerry West.....who played against Wilt and WITH Wilt....once said....Wilt was the best player to ever play.....and is isn't close....and Jerry happens to be the best Talent Executive in basketball EVER! To anyone who questions whether Wilt was the GOAT, one question: Can you name one player who even neutralized him? Even Russ allowed Wilt to score 29.9 PPG, pull down 28.2 RPG and dish out 3.8 APG and that's against the guy considered the best defensive player ever. To the people saying Wilt wont get as much points in todays game because of less possessions consider this. An NBA quarter is 12 min. A player only has to make 5 shots a quarter to get a MINIMUM of 40 points. Now lets look at Wilt's offensive repertoire. Dipper dunk, over shoulder finger role, fadeaway. My comment was meant in jest although it's interesting how the game is now being dominated by guards and perimeter players, in general. We're seeing a lack of dominant big men as compared to the "old days" so a player as dominant as Wilt would have a clear advantage in todays game. In addition, Wilt in his prime was a very mobile athlete so he could play any style which would still make him a great player in todays game. We're talking about the strongest player in the history of the game that could jump out of the gym, run like a deer, dominate the paint, and pretty much score at will unless triple teamed.

To those that say Wilt could not be great any era. Kareem played 1960s style from when he entered the NBA in the late 1960s, thru the 70s and into the late 80s. He was the greatest hook shot master ever. His whole offensive game was based around a left and a right skyhook. Wilt had a more vast arsenal. I know a lot of you are disparaging Wilt's skill because he played against "6 foot centers". Wilt Chamberlain was 7'1" so against centers who were 6'10 or 6'9, the difference in height is only 3-4 inches. Remember anybody over 6'6" was either a center or a forward. Magic Johnson was the first player over 6'6" who played like a guard. You keep forgetting guys like Sam Bowie, Ralph Sampson also played in the NBA even for a short while. And having height doesn't necessarily translate into success; Gheorge Murasan and Manute Bol come to mind. Give credit where it's due; the most dominant player in the history of the NBA and arguable the Greatest of All Time-Wilton Norman Chamberlain.

The NBA's always had its own "tiered system" so if Shaq was being guarded by Rodman (especially playing alongside Jordan) they wouldn't let him get away with his pushing as when being guarded by Olajuwon, Robinson or Mutombo. Same with Chamberlain, he had to be extra careful not to be the bully in the eyes of the referee and since rules were more strict back then to prevent anyone dominating on pure physicallity, he had to shoot from distance and even when he reaches to do a finger roll he's being careful his movement doesn't hit the defender.

I had the Fortune of watching Mr. Chamberlain play throughout his Lakers Career while I was a youngster. By then he was past his prime unbeknowingst to me but it didnt matter. To me he was Larger than Life and Always carried himself with a Genuine Personna. He Commanded Respect and got it. I remember an "Urban Legend" floating around during Jr High days about an encounter he had years earlier in the 1960s with a "Notorius" NFL Defensive Tackle named Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb. Basically The "Mean Joe" Greene of the early 1960s but more Ornery off the field as well. The "Story" goes Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Lipscomb "bumped" into each other at one of those "Celebrity" Parties and Mr. Lipscomb staying True To Form said something about Basketball Players being "Soft". Wilt "The Stilt" promptly Lifted "Big Daddy"(Off The Ground) to Eye Level and Reminded Him that his Choice Of Words could be taken Personally. Something to the EFFect of: "Don't EFF with ME". Placed him down Gently Brushed Off His Shoulders and Resumed Partying. Sounds About Right to me considering Stories that were circulating about his Strength Coming from Teammates, Rivals, and people who knew him like Arnold Schwartzeneggar. Arnold (No Small Item Himself) Said Wilt basically Scared The ISH outta him in The Weight Room while working together on a "Conan" Movie. High Praise coming from a Premier Bodybuilder of his Day. Great montage. It is true, for the most part this fade-away bank shot disappeared from Wilt's arsenal in the later years. It could be he decided the fade away took him out of position for rebounds, as it certainly did for Patrick Ewing later on. While I don't want to feed the myth that Wilt's opposing centers were markedly smaller than today's players, one could argue the forwards and guards swarming around Wilt in the 60s were significantly smaller than in his latter career, possibly making this shot more difficult to execute.

For a bad FT shooter, Wilt possessed an amazing near accurate fadeaway / bank shot, simply unbelievable even by today's standards. Wilt's kind of underrated in some ways (even with 2 rings), because of the Finals losses he suffered against the 60's Celtics and 70's Knickerbockers. Individually he's almost unmatched, great scorer, superb rebounding, uncanny passing (only center in NBA history to lead league in assists), solid defender (Like Russell, lots of unrecorded block shots and steals), simply all around amazing athleticism. There's no doubt Wilt would dominate today's NBA even if he doesn't average 50 points and 25 rebounds. A 1961-62 Wilt Chamberlain would garner stats of 30-35 points, 15-20 rebounds, 4-5 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks in today's NBA.
