Me and my mates growing up in the 60s thought nothing of drinking water from streams, rivers and pools. I’m sure there were dead sheep or whatever upstream at some of the water sources but our guts were used to the onslaught and coped just fine. These days folk are cleaning themselves and their environments to the point they’re training their guts to fight nothing!

exactly, if there is something dead upstream, if you can see it its too close, if you can't even see it by time that water reaches you, it'll be so diluted to not be a problem, for the most part. I've been drinking hill water for over ten years, ignoring all the fear mongering about viruses bacteria and all deradly things in the water and understanding if something happened - it hasnt yet - most likely not the water. Good to read a little common sense is about these days still.

@@WiltshireMan I have watched so many videos where bushcraft/camping people are filtering and boiling their water and so I just assumed that that was extremely important. Having watched you drink from the spring at Bishopstone I had begun to think a bit differently though. Along with these other two comments I now realize that as with much else in this life it's all a matter of common sense and ignoring the fear porn! Thank you! And yes, the weather is definitely being manipulated. I take photos of the sky most mornings...

Good camp Sandy. Your talk about water made me smile, as a kid we had fields behind the house. The fields had a spring and we all used to drink from the spring. I was fascinated watching the water come from the earth. Down stream it gave us more entertainment by daming the stream up and then let the water rush out. Harmless fun but I didn’t half get into trouble with mum coming home covered in mud. Not a games machine in sight. 73’s

Where was the water? How do you know it was "definitely" the water? If it was high in the hills more likely something else, were you solo or sharing food and utensils? Had you eaten something? Have you googled water mountains scotland etc? Check it out, the gov website says mountain water - usually - safe to drink. I guess that a one in a thousand chance you got unlucky. But it probably was at least a one in thousand chance it was the water.... Read Chris Townsend Book the Backpackers Handbook, a whole section is on the subject.

@TonyHobbs it was in Italy Tony. I'm in Austria and the water here is also drinking quality. I just wanted to point out to Sandy how nasty infections are. Mine was either from swimming in the sea in Italy or from the swimming pool so the Doc thought at the time. Water here in Austria in the mountains and most lakes is pure, but you only need a dead rat or something to possibly contamint the water source. Boil it first is always best unless your sure. We have up the road from me an underground spring which dates back to medival times. Water is beautiful and regularly tested by the local council. People fill up their bottles by the gallon.

@paulhunt1072 hi Paul thanks for reply. Ah yeah those water sources could potentially cause an issue esp pool if not fully maintained. I've had terrible trouble in Kenya lol holidays 😅 not lion hiking. I guess there is a tiny risk but in hills it's tiny. Absolutely many will feel safer happier boiling filtering etc. And for peace of mind. But once switch I can't ever see myself going back... up in hills... as long as looks and feels safe. Re dead animals if ya see it move up stream. If can't see it you'll probably never know.... I popped comment on another below on this I remember the third test group now... placebo tabs . All three showed exactly same results.

I live in a very similar environment. They call this the Forest of Bowland but Forest as meant in the term of being a former royal hunting ground. The moors have many birds that get bopped off by chaps and chapesses with guns in that season. There are lots of deer and plenty of foxes I'm glad to say; I've only ever seen 2 badgers but they were making a recce of a local village churchyard I passed through during the night - i had pitched up with permission from the priest. I've seen a few hedgehogs flat and living.

@WiltshireMan good to finally hear a little common sense vs the fear mongering from pretty much everyone else. It'll be an interesting topic in the comments... I see one already .... I'll probably pop my oar in here occasionally. A couple interesting sources are Chris Townsend Backpackers Handbook he has a whole section on this plus simply Google drinking mountain water Scotland or something like that.... a government website lays it out.... if the water up there is good enough to drink our English and Welsh water more than good enough . But let's not let marketing and poor word of mouth get in the way of a good drink of mountain water or moorland water. Good to see you not discouraged by the dead sheep .... as many will try to point out.... what people need to understand is 99% of time it's poor hygiene and sharing snack foods hands in others snack pack etc. My no rule is I never share or eat offered food or sweets. Particularly opened ones. But again blaming the water is too easy 😉 and all you'll hear for poorly tummies.

Sorry so many questions but just curious. As for the weather, in Sussex it’s been awful. Cold & wet, endless rain. They’re defiantly geo engineering something in the higher atmosphere. PS Yes I can carry the gear fine but I don't like leaving the bike, they are more vulnerable to theft and tampering than a car
@alexmorgan3435

@@WiltshireMan Yep sadly they are Sandy. What I did was leave the bulk of my gear at the campsite in my tent, possibly risky, lock all my valuables in my bike panniers and then head off taking obvious things like my wallet, passport, phone and power bank plus hiking gear with me. If riding to a hiking area, I change when there and leave my biking gear in my panniers and top box. Of course bike has disc locks and D-locks to help prevent theft. I don't leave anything strapped to my bike, everything is locked away. Seems to have worked ok up until now. I even carry walking poles on my bike no problem. They go either in the dry bag with protection on the pointy tip or sandwiched in my folding foam mattress. Works quite well. Hiking and biking seems a good mix. Like you I need exercise, I can't ride like some can for hour after hour days on end. I soon feel very crappy and cranky. Got to keep active and healthy, sadly being on a motorcycle is not active enough for me. Like you cycling as well. When I am sitting in the saddles of my bicycles there is no other place I'd rather be not even on a motorcycle, but I love riding motorcycles too. Dilemma. So love your videos. You are looking very healthy these days. Good on you. Use it or lose it. You have full luggage for your V-Strom don't you? Did you sell your car? I remember you didn't run it for a bit as you said you couldn't justify the high cost for what use you got out of it? ATB.

Good to see you fit again Sandy and having an enjoyable trip in spite of the weather. I thought global warming was all about a general increase in temperatures but maybe not applicable to Dartmoor 😂. I'm lucky to live within half-an-hour's drive to Dartmoor so have walked a lot of it on my own and can understand the enjoyment of trying a solo stretch. The Trailstar gives you a lot of living space and plenty of ventilation but unfortunately no protection against the midges and your tent would be my preference in the very wet conditions. Regards Keith

@WiltshireMan 3 ай бұрын
I would also want more midge protection, my tent was fine but I was wishing for a bit more space, I may take my Lanshan 2 next time, will have best of both worlds then. Tony does have an inner mesh for his trail star if midges are bad

A wonderful hike Sandy. The weather was not the most pleasant but the beautiful scenery that surrounded you and great companion (Tony) more than made up for that. The weather has been very sporadic here where I live also Sandy (the state of Oregon on the west coast of the U.S.) Summer is off to a rather rough start I think. It will smooth out soon hopefully and the expected bright blue skies will be with us for a while then. Thank you so much for letting us join you on this adventure. See you on the next one my friend.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the weather, something underhand is going on somewhere. They created rain clouds in Dubai and almost flooded the place so if it can be done there it can be done anywhere. It's really getting me down because i'm desperate to try out some bikepacking kit and it will put me off for life if I head out in the kind of rain we had at the weekend. Anyway, great video as always. I'm already subscribed to Tony's channel, he does some good stuff too.

On a trip like this in these conditions once your feet are wet they stay wet, boots don't dry out, but the good thing is whilst at camp I could get my feet warm and dry again. Feet will cope OK fo a day in damp waterlogged conditions but it's important to get them dry atleast for the night

Sandy in all the time I've been following and knowing you this is the video that has hit home the most 🙌 what an enjoyable experience with Tony and his collie , I had a collie cross lurcher ( CALLED QUIGLEY ) who sadly passed away a while ago , although Tony's tent did look roomier, I think it was bordering tarp tent 👍 good job the jinx wasn't on this one and rialobran will have put you in goodstead , I might not of walked the miles you've done in your life but I'd of certainly liked to of been your guardian angel on some of those 🙌 always there for you Sandy just holla 🍺🫶🤙

I need to get back to Dartmoor for sure. As for the weather you are right to come to the conclusion that the weather is being messed with. The Met Office recently admitted to "weather modification". The UAE are very much into it and look what happened recently in Dubai - a years rainfall in 24 hours.

I don't use one, instead have everything inside a dry bag in the rucksack and the sleeping bag was in another drysack of its own so double protected. In my experience dry bags work better than rain covers which can be blown off the pack by the wind
