Cycling is definitely the best way to explore disused railway lines We have some in Hertfordshire that are fun to ride and you randomly see sleepers, platforms and bridges that remind of a bygone era

If you are ever heading up to Scotland then there are loads of old railways around Dundee (including a tunnel through the top of a hill, old roped inclines etc). Happy to show you around if diaries coincide.

Brought back memories of the old railway in Swindon when I was a child in the early 70s. Track still intact in the station and once walked over the old bridge across the GWR main line... There was even more old stuff to find back then. I recall the ruins of some ?water pumping apparatus not long after leaving the old station

In the early 70s, the line around Swindon was still intact because they used it to supply materials to build the M 4.

Great to see you on a bike as I've often wondered why you haven't used bikes in the past. It's worth thinking about wild camping to to give you a bigger range, you can fit all the kit into panniers on the back and front then just find a good place to camp!

The e-bike could be a game changer for your channel as you can see so much more of the old railways etc when you can go along the length of them and you also won’t be knackered! Looks like a great line to cycle down!

Hi Paul/Rebecca I was looking forward to this video but ended up skipping it due the the running ad I much prefer the block add as it is your content and comments on your history/explorations that I'm here for I know adds bring in revenue. I have never bought anything from seeing an ad but on a number of occasions I have stopped buying things Ilike/ use because I've seen adds for it that I did not like. Please keep adds in blocks so as you say we can skip through them, other than that keep up the good work you put out for us Thanks

That van body was a standard BR 12 ton ventilsted van with plywood sides and doors. At least one batch was built like this at Faverdale Wagon Works, Darlington. But it might have been built with plank sides and doors or a combination of plank and plywood sides and doors and have had everything thing, save the corrugated ends with plywood sheets.

​@@davidshackleton3971you could be right, difficult to tell on my screen couldn't see clearly the outside door locking mechanism. It'll be one if them built to diagram 1/246 which external matched the Standard Ventilated Van but without steam heating which was abandoned in 1957 with lot number 3010 with the building of vans to diagram 1/243 which only had a through steam pipe. This one would have been build in 1959-1960.

We had 2 like that on our farm. They had both been done up in the 1950's in Swindon. They ended up on our farm sometime in the 60's. Unfortunately both cut up for scrap in the 90's. They would have made great garden buildings/camping pods. Both very well made sometime around 1913/14.

@@neiloflongbeck5705 yes there was plenty around on the farms round here. They made good stores and I suspect they were fairly cheap for the farmer. 60's farmers didn't like spending money🤣🤣.

Great video and in my neck of the woods. I live in old town and have ridden the track to Marlborough countless times and it never gets old, especially all the hidden bits of the railway you come across along the way. Im sure the Himiway ebike came in handy on the hill back up to Chiseldon 😊

One of my favourite dismantled lines I like to follow in the car from Andover to Swindon. Thanks again, Paul and Rebecca. I used to be a ling distance cyclist when I was a kid, an d I remember a lot of things that I saw.

I've had a Himiway cruiser bike since April. 40-50 miles range. I've done several 40 mile trips with battery charge to spare. Get yourself a hi-viz vest and some padded pants and have fun....!

Nice one Paul, I do a lot of cycling (on a real bike 😂), I have a perfect route for you, Bristol TM to Swindon via old railways and canals, virtually no cars involved, 80 miles in total. Interesting your comment about the tunnel in Swindon, have you covered this in the past? Keep up the great work 🤙

I discuss this very thing in the video. If they are too thin, offroad is impossible. This will do 80 miles on electric. Who cares what the tyre size is when you are watching the world go by 🤪😉

I used to do that route, picking up at the edge of Swindon and going to Marlborough. Ideal cycleway, shame not to still be a railway.

Remember seeing a lot of the old infrastructure back in the 90s arround swindon on wy way to Bristol and Gloucester from Guildford.

I briefly lived in a house almost above the Queen's Park collapsed tunnel. Also lived close to the Rushey Platt area and the canal. The path up to Swindon Town was great and the 12/13 miles to Marlborough too.

The Ridgeway crosses the line at the farm shop south of Chisildon next to Bush House cross roads. Used to play on the embankment at Marlborough throwing stones down into the sewage works drying beds.

I had a long chat with an engine driver in Fishguard years ago, he used to run ammo training from Fishguard through Swindon on that line to dumps just past Andover and to Southampton, really interesting stories

e-bikes are definitely the future, and definitely right up your alley. However, they bluddy terrify me because of the fire risk (but only for second-hand ones where people haven't matched the charger to the replacement battery that they have bought online. I think this will become a big problem over the next few years). That bike is bluddy cool though! Apart from the fact that it doesn't have a front mudguard - I mean, why the f*** not - it's the United Kingdom where it rains - A LOT).

Being my hometown I've cycled and ran along those routes many times. Bearing in mind the traffic these days, Beeching was very short sighted - but then as his boss ran a tarmac company what do you expect? 😢

We have a similar toof path/cycle route where i live , Route 71 follows the path of the old Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway , i ride along it or walk it with my dog ,found the remnats of 2 stations so far ,Yeathouse station where the platforms are still there and at Winder the old station house is there plus the platform , i think it's a great way to reuse and old railway line :)

Impressed! One of the reasons I don't cycle is that we live surrounded by mountains, maybe an e-bike is the answer. Nice video, reminded me of when we used to have railways.

I’m sure you saw it, but there is a fantastic red brick skew bridge over the Wilts and Berks canal at Rushy Platt. An impressive structure, plus the canal is fully in water at that point (unlike the majority of the canal at the moment).

Great question, I think it just used the hill and went down along it. Its really difficult to tell as it stands today.

One thing i dislike is the hydraulic brakes go wrong can be a bit of a problem ,always disconnect them easily

By cycling and doing the panoramic shots you could get a sense of what it was like to go along the route by train. Nice vid!

aww I used to take my kids along the old town path to rushy platt ...we used to stop at that secret spot to have a bite to eat and all this time I never knew it was the remains of an old platform ! thanks Paul for that great little piece of knowledge ...its a beautiful stretch of old line that one

We've just come back from a holiday in the Peak District staying in a cottage in the shadow of 2 great viaducts on the old Midland railway line, now the Monsdale Trail. Lots of walkers and cyclists. Many viaducts, long lit tunnels, old lime kilns, old quarries now nature reserves, and former stations offering refreshments. A rail group wants to reopen the line but this would deprive thousands of people each year from using it for walking and cycling.

20 miles, even for a fat sack o...... like me thats just two hour rough terrain on a £15 facebook marketplace special.. put in the pedals , no need for electric.
