Henman was an inconsistent player but on grass he was a difficult opponent for anyone. He used to lose his serve too often which cost him a lot in his career. One thing Henman did do really well was the overhead volley, not seen too many do it better, unfortunately there were other weaknesses to his game. However in 2001 he did play ever so well and really had a great chance to win Wimbledon, he was probably the best player in the tournament that year and was really unlucky in the semi final, Ivanesevic was on the ropes and was saved by the rain. I think after that semi final defeat his chance for a grand slam win was realistically gone as the serve and volley style of tennis become a lost art. But whatever your view of Henmam, he did some produce exciting tennis on grass
@raynerstuelgalid2 жыл бұрын
The serve and volley style of tennis did not become a lost art. It was a pragmatic response by players adjusting to the heavier (and deeper) ground strokes brought about by modern innovations in racquet and string technologies. (The forehand mechanics also had to change to take advantage of these.) Even serve and volley tennis phased out of Wimbledon because of changes to the grass courts there.

Henman has stated himself that he was lucky to be 2-1 ahead of Goran before the rain delay as some fortune went his way and he also said that in the end, Goran deserved the win...but he was far more than a difficult player on grass, he was an awesome server and volleyer with a big serve hence the double faults here and there. He basically got to 4 w'don finals (I know semis as he, unfortunately, met all the winners of the tourns in those matches and he would have easily beat some of the other opponents who made it to the finals on the other side of the draw.

I do think Tim would have won Wimbledon but of course he fell foul of Sampras twice in the semis and then the rain interrupted semi vs Ivanisevic in which he was 2 pts from victory. Somewhat unlucky and somewhat not strong enough mentally, but still one of the best tennis players we've ever had in the UK.

Federer peaked in his match with Pete Sampras in the previous round...he thought Henman would be easy meat. How wrong was he. Henman played superbly...he made the semis and should have beaten Goran had it not been for 3 rain interruptions. The final against Rafter would have been easier for him as he had beaten the Aussie at Wimbledon a couple of years before.

Paulo Torres I think he was secretly planning to retire last year whilst all his family was watching. Poor sod.

instead Federer's last ever professional match is at Wimbledon where he loses in straight sets and is bagelled 6-0 off centre court...

I do feel that those 3 years before federer won his maiden grandslam he had the opportunity to win more !

There were no opportunities when he couldn't reach a single GS SF lol

Would this Tim Henman beat the same 18 year old Andy Murray who beat a 31 year old Tim Henman 🤔

Love the old tennis on grass. Tennis nowsaday is boring. Grass should be fast and furious.

I'd forgotten what a slow player Henman was between points.

I forgot how much serve and volleying Federer did in his early career. While it's a good tactic, it's gotta be on point, so I'm glad he largely abandoned it later.
