Also a father who has been an avid gun collector for decades. In the not so distant past most of these vintage & vintage surplus rifles and pistols were quite cheap compared to today. IE: in the 1990s a matching numbers Kar98k with original markings all intact could be found _easily_ for $80 - $150 depending on the condition, specific manufacturer/year, etc. Whereas now matching numbers Kar98k's can go for over $2000 - $4000 any day of the week.

My grandfather said he once had one of these rifles. It was originally designed to be a prison guard's weapon, but a number of them made it into public hands. I had never seen one in person until I worked a trade of some items with a local collector/gunsmith and he showed me his collection. I got to hold the gun and was surprised at how heavy it really is. Very interesting gun.

The M1 carbine cartridge is around 1900fps whereas the cartridge for this rifle is more like 2200fps or so. Both well above pistol cartridge velocities.

I saw some for $1.75 a round somewhere on-line, although the freight would bring it up. That was for a box of 50. I was looking at one of these only yesterday. The offer included extra magazines and ammo, although I don't know how much of each. If you think that's expensive, you should see what 9.3x62 goes for, only you can't find it for sale anywhere anyway.

Military sometimes gets hung up on wanting backward compatibility with an already approved, well established cartridge, which was at that time the 30-06. I get the sense that this particular Winchester rifle would not have been adaptable to that cartridge. And this was well before there was any thinking of scaled down battle rifle cartridges when it came to warfare.
