As someone who has shopped at both winco and Walmart, the winco shopping experience is much better. Winco stores are always cleaner and better stocked. Additionally the checkout process is much better. They always have a good number of lines open and although you have to bag your own groceries you end up getting out faster because they have a unique dual conveyor belt system at the registers that allow multiple customers to bag at once. Also their prices are unbeatable.

Not in Dallas Texas. The WinCos here still close at 11. I work the night shift and it was so wonderful to be able to shop when I got off of work. My WinCo is not convenient to go to on my off days as its close to work which is not close to home. I now need to shop before going to work and I have to plan on being delayed and I some times show up at work 45 min early because I was in and out fast. It was so mush better hitting them on my way home as it was dead and I was in and out quickly as I would be surprised if there was a dozen people in there including the employees.

Another thing that WinCo is infamous for is placing the prices of items at other grocery stores, and it really shows how they try to have the lowest price possible by adding the prices of items sold at other stores such as Walmart. Some locations also have two carts filled with the exact same items, except one cart has the total price of the items at a competing store, while the other has the price of the items at Winco. A smart strategy if you ask me.

One thing worth mentioning is that one of Winco's biggest strategies for cutting cost is to reduce variety of each individual object. You often won't find 15+ different brands of peanut butter, or shampoo or other staples. They stick with stocking just a few brands of each kind of item, and this really reflects in the savings they're able to pass onto consumers.

The town I went to college in had both a WinCo and a Walmart. WinCo was where you went to buy all your food and Walmart was where you went to begrudgingly buy all your household goods. I got to be in a meeting w/Bob Long in Boise about 20 years ago. The way they expand is by areas with larger families. They pull census and other proprietary data, it has to make sense from the distribution center. He has it down to if a shopping cart was stolen how much jars of pickles they’d have to sell. It was something like if one cart is stolen it means we have to sell over 1,000 jars of pickles to make up for the loss. It was amazing to see how he thought. Oh and prices are lower than Walmart.

The bulk section alone keeps me going back to winco. Their spices are good quality and you can get how much of them you need for extremely low prices when compared to the bottles you can get in most grocery store spice isles. Around here their produce isn't always great, but that's really the only knock on them that I have. In every other respect they're one of the best grocery stores around.

When the first WinCo opened in the DFW area, several of my friends piled in a car and we drove the 45 minutes to marvel in it opening week. As the video stated , it was word of mouth - one of my friends had lived on the west coast and loved it so much. In most areas their grocery selection is wider than Wal-Mart's, and I have also seen that the WinCo employees are generally friendlier and more helpful than almost every other grocery store - except for one. Since HEB has expanded to my area I'm now deeply conflicted on who's getting my grocery dollars.

If they're still open 24/7 after the pandemic, that right there will launch them to popularity. If I'm not mistaken, Walmart has never returned to having any of their stores be 24 hours after the pandemic (so I suppose the Super Walmart's are now dead...). Not sure how much of their sales happen after 11PM, but people like night time shopping when things are quieter, so there's still a market for 24 hour stores. Heh, I bet Walmart would bring it back if WinCo really began expanding. I'm hapoy to hear there is a company that can rival Walmart, though. I would shop elsewhere if other stores were cheaper and had a decent amount of variety.

The building, which is quite big, was in a very good spot of town (funnily enough, across the street from both an Albertsons and a Target). It sat unused for years, which I'm now assuming is because WinCo was waiting for the right time to startup. Utah is a very brutal market for grocery store chains, especially on the Wasatch Front. For WinCo to even think of entering that market just to get a toehold much less establish themselves the way they have is very impressive. I can completely understand why they waited decades before entering the market here and why they would choose to expand to Seattle before Salt Lake City. The number of empty and abandoned grocery stores is still pretty significant where many have gone bankrupt in this market. The fact that the stores I have been to in Utah are not only in business but almost always busy no matter the time of day that I come there to shop. It really is quite impressive. It’s right across the street from a Walmart. And as far as groceries, WinCo beats them easily. There was a few other markets on the same street which is popular. They either literally went out of business or moved because they could not compete with WinCo. I’m glad you mentioned the employees being happy because a friend of mine has been there for almost 10 years I believe and a lot of their other employees at my local Winco have been with the company for many years. I shop there quite often so I know lol. However, I didn’t know it was an ESOP company! That’s awesome! It’s a really great shopping experience and no one can beat their prices. It’s funny because the Vons that is a couple lights away tries to compete especially with their egg prices. Lol overall none of the markets can compete, especially FoodMax or FoodsCo

It also helps that much like Wal-Mart's Great Value, Winco has its own storebrand products, which are pretty cheap and of decent quality. To compare with Wal-Mart, my family finds grocery shopping at Wal-Mart to be much more expensive. Food shopping is to be done at Winco while clothing, makeup, toiletries is more of a Wal-Mart thing (as they have more selections in those areas). I had not had a Winco near me until last year when I moved, and the first time I was there I was shocked at how cheap and high quality their produce section was. Their bulk section is always fully stocked and very clean, employees are always nice and helpful. They have a huge deli section with ready to go lunches as well as hot meals, I have coworkers that get their lunch at Winco every day. I never even considered Walmart as a competitor to be honest, their produce section is pretty bad and the lines are long. The reasons I don’t always shop at WinCo are the debit card only thing, I prefer to use credit cards so I can accumulate points, and they don’t have a very impressive selection of plant based foods, and what they have is very expensive compared to Kroger which periodically has sales.

I was kinda worried that the low prices were because maybe the food was lower quality or something but this video really helped my understanding! I definitely like shopping there more compared to Walmart and I think I will more now. It's also an easier commute from where I live.

I've been living in an area with WinCos for over a decade, but I haven't shopped at one location. My mom shops at Walmart weekly. I've been pushing the cart many back-to-back weeks because she had surgery. She couldn't lift or push heavy things. She also couldn't kneel down.

WinCo was always my first choice back when I lived near one, getting spices in bulk was so much better than going to walmart. Also there own brand of goods are much cheaper than walamart, espcesally their canned beans and vegetables. I hope that they build one on the east coast .

In my college town of Moscow, the two main options for college students for cheap groceries. Those are Walmart and Winco. Here, Winco almost has a cult following for good reason. It is cheap, easy/pleasant to shop for, and is open 24/7. I love it and I feel like its shopping experience will win out in the near future.

My family was so happy when WinCo came to Texas. The first location was not close by, but we drove there once a month. We now have one near us and it's within a mile of both an Albertsons and a Walmart. We never shop at Walmart (why would you if you don't have to) and the Albertsons is closing. The team members do generally look happy and the store is always clean and stocked. My only complaint is their beef/pork supplier is not the best and I find it hard to the get the cut I want. We do buy a lot from the bulk area and their dairy products are very good. I love the Greeen/Yellow/Red price labels that tell you if it's lower, on par, or above competitors prices. At least if they are higher they are telling you and you have the option of convenience or buying it somewhere else.

I became a WinCo customer till I relocated to Placerville, CA from the Bay Area in California. My late wife and I always shopped at WinCo, Walmart, and Costco in Folsom CA which is about 20 miles away from Placerville my hometown. I would say that Winco is, by far, much better than Walmart and Costco, both in Folsom as well. I love to shop at WinCo because it has everything at excellent prices and not only that... it is owned by the employees and the quality of the products they sell is second to none. All in all, I will continue shopping at WinCo till I kick the bucket. The best market I have shopped at in the USA!

I remember when Walmart tried to do a price match guarantee where if you brought a receipt showing that you got the same product for a lower price from a different store you they'll match that price. But the Walmart here had to stop doing that because they were losing so much money from matching WinCo prices. Pretty much everyone goes to WinCo around here and really only go to Walmart either for other things besides groceries, like electronics and stuff or if WinCo some how doesn't have the item you need.

Yeah for my experience they're decent company and actually employ two of my disabled uncles and treat them fairly well. Oddly enough in my area there are three!

7:16 So as a born and raised Oregonian, i will say that Waremart is still a thing, but unlike before when Waremart was THE name of the store, todays Waremart stores (with the only ones i know of being in Independence and Keizer OR) are essentially the WinCo equivalent of Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market (smaller store often with more restricted hours, with WinCo stores being open 24hrs except during major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, while both the Keizer and Independence Waremarts are only open from 6 AM to 11 PM, likely with their hours being even more restricted during the times when WinCo stores aren't open 24hrs like usual)

In terms of pricing, you should do a piece on H-E-B. H-E-B's home base, San Antonio, has the lowest grocery prices in the country because of the long lasting price war with Walmart. Neither company has givin an inch. Also, this year, H-E-B edged out Amazon to become the number one ranked grocery chain by Dunnhumby and H-E-B was ranked by Forbes as the #4 best large employer to work for.

A big reason I bought my house where I did is because it's less than a mile from a WinCo. I can literally see it across the farmland from my living room window. If they sold gas we'd stop there much more often, but whatever we don't get at Costco, we hop to WinCo on the way home. LOVE LOVE LOVE this store.

I love WinCo. My friends in Sacramento introduced me to them when I was visiting a few years ago. The nearest on to me in So Cal is over 30 miles away. I can hardly wait for them to expand to the San Fernando Valley. The size can be a bit overwhelming, but their prices and selection more than make up for it and you were definitely right about the employees being friendly.

Winco consistently has had the very best bulk bin section of any grocery store I've ever visited. Definite boon to those trying not add waste to the planet.

I live in Oregon and our family has shopped there almost exclusively since the 90s. The place is pretty much unmatched in prices and the quality of the stuff they sell is top-notch. It's a great place to shop.
