The problem with the vast majority of scenes with Dalinar and Navani in this one is that they're basically just a camera lens giving us glimpses into scenes we don't have nearly enough context to care about. The chapters amount to giant lore dumps, and it stops being interesting because nothing happening has anything to do with our POV characters. As soon as Odium started messing with them, like Navani being back with Gavilar, it was engaging to read these great characters again! I am convinced the reason Adolin has been the by-far favorite in this entry is because his story was the most-grounded and least lore-dumpy of all the major plot threads
@TiffanyRussell

Adolin was by far my favorite part of this book. I agree that Dalinar and Navani were used more as lenses than having their own story in the spiritual realm.

Audio book “reader” finished it in two days. I still have not been able to a decision on if I like the book or not. I think my love for the series is clouding my ability to be rational. I can’t tell if I’m just angry at the lack of information or disappointed in what actually there. This book is somehow to long and to short. It’s entirely too long for what’s actually in the book and not long enough for what should have been in the book.

It really bothers me how much of the discourse is just annoyed mormon fans whining about the gay relationship as if that's even remotely and issue, much less one of the biggest issues with this book. The only issue with that relationship is that Rennarin and R'lain were such nothing characters who got near-zero page time in the last 4 books. I genuinely wonder if the secret projects/covid were really detrimental on this book's development. Writing 4 other books while writing ostensibly your magnum opus can't have helped, I don't care who you are as an author. And the biggest red flag for me is that he did focus groups and had THREE different endings that no one liked, but rather than just pick one and develop it further, he just combined all three into a mismatched mess.
@TiffanyRussell
@TiffanyRussell 10 күн бұрын
I have tried to avoid most discourse about it, so I could go in with an open mind. I think he had plenty of time to work on it post the secret projects, so I’m not sure how much that time can be blamed.

Surprised people get salty at pushback when they phrase comments in clearly controversial ways. "This book sucks" is phrased as you would phrase an objective fact - like "the sky is blue." If you state an opinion as fact, you should be expecting people to argue. I usually interpret it as an invitation to an aweful debate. You are entitled to an opinion, but you aren't THE arbiter of facts. For the record, I enjoyed the book. It found plenty of things I didn't love, but I was still impressed with the story as a whole. Hope everyone has a great day.

Sanderson has always been pretty weak with prose. It’s very generic stuff and just how weak his writing was must have been masked by his editor Moshe.
