Wind Cake 🍰 Great Depression Era Recipe - No Milk No Butter! Cheap Cake Recipe

This is a recipe from The Great Depression called Wind Cake. It's called Wind Cake because its main ingredient is wind! It's very cheap and easy to make. There is no milk or butter in the cake.

In the video that Grandpa makes me an angel food cake he shows the vintage Ann Pillsbury’s Baking Book. That book has a chiffon cake recipe next to the angel food cake recipe. My mom made this, too, a chiffon cake. I grew up on a chicken and pig farm where we sold the pigs and the eggs, so mom made a lot of homemade desserts and dishes that required eggs. If anyone in the comments hasn't had fresh homemade angel food cake... it is so worth the trouble. Grandpa you did a great job making this luscious cake and grandma you did a great job making it yummier and pretty with the strawberries. It's so simple, light and hits the spot.

@@GrandmaFeral One of my undergraduate degrees is in chemistry -- but the only place I've really used the biochemistry I've studied is in the kitchen, where I've repaired recipes gone wrong by knowing what type of substance (protein? Fat? Salt?) to add to correct an imbalance. You can teach that egg whites are proteins in a classroom, but their wonders as proteins come alive when one whips or heats them; I think it's a great way to introduce kids both to cooking and to chemistry to have them see what goes on in a kitchen.

While I was reading the comments I asked my AI assistant what's the difference between angel food cake and chiffon cake. Angel food cake has no egg yolks or fat. Chiffon cake has both egg whites and egg yolks. So this is a Chiffon Cake but I like the name 📛 you call it so much better. 😄 Wind Cake is what it shall be, forever after! When we were first married Grandpa did not like many foods. He disliked peas, pumpkin, squashes. I would make it for myself and the family and I would make something else he liked. With age his taste has changed and he basically eats everything now but still dislikes peas. He did taste the pea soup on camera that I made. He just would not like to have it again. As for myself I was a banana baby and was fed so much banana as an infant and that is the one thing I dislike to this day. Yes I will make the original pound cake in a future video. It's similar to an Angel Food Cake, egg whites are the base. If you grease the pan the cake can't "climb" the sides of the pan and won't rise.

Great work Grandpa. The first part reminded me of meringue and I thought he would add the sugar to the egg whites. I used to make meringues a lot as a kid and its only 2 ingredients, egg whites and sugar, very simple and nice dessert.
