WIND RIVER CANYON Scenic Byway - Wyoming - USA
It is located to Yellowstone National Park, between the towns of Shoshoni and Thermopolis. On US Hwy 20, on 16 miles, along Bighorn River and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad line.
Departure GPS position:
Longitude: 43.596995° Latitude: -108.215600°
Arrival GPS position:
Longitude: 43.396870° Latitude: -108.162327°
The hightway travel through the canyon, at times level with the canyon floor.
The southern mouth of the canyon is near the Boysen Dam in Boysen State Park.
From south to north, the canyon crosses an area of complex faulting, then narrows as it descends into Precambrian rocks at three road tunnels.

Du sud au nord, le canyon traverse une zone de failles complexes, puis se rétrécit en descendant dans les roches précambriennes au niveau de trois tunnels routiers.

I lived in Worland until last summer, and I used to take this drive just for pure pleasure. I would turn around in Shoshone, and drive right back through. Thanks for the post, it brings back memories.

I drove all over the country in a semi, this is by far my most favorite road I have ever driven

We did this drive last year during a trip but I'd forgotten what a fantastic drive it is. Thanks for posting/sharing this.

I'm reading a Longmire story that takes place at the three tunnels and wanted to see what it looks like. Beautiful.

Wind River area has always been good for fossil hunters....provided you are not afraid of a prairie rattler now and then. (yes, they den up in those rocks, and stay close to a water source). So you think...ok, I"ll go somewhere else right ? Wrong......those buggers can be anywhere. Granted...you might not see one...but if you ever do....you"ll think twice.....especially if it was a close encounter.

Good information...For fossils I don't say no, for rattlesnakes I'm not used to cuddling. The Wind River region is very beautiful, and the road that “winds” along the river is unforgettable. In France we have calmer snakes... Thank you for all your comments see you soon on KZbin…
