congrats, never a dull moment! A Poet and a Chef sailing together, making it look & sound so easy on a subsistence budget. The sail deal at cost was a nice surprise , looking forward to some more passionate winds and logistics damage control events all done with an adorable New England understatement monologue 🎉!

To reduce chafing on your bridle, you might consider using a round turn & two half hitches, rather than a bowline on the dinghy attachment rings. Or you might just double up the loop on your bowline so that the strain is better distributed on the dinghy attachment riings.

Last summer seemed to be one of either too much or too little wind. Mainsail at the loft for a third reef to be fitted. Two reefs, no head sail and 25 knots = constipation cure!

Nice bridle! Another idea is to attach it to the towing rings with Spectra soft shackles. Easy on/off when you want to remove it (often, for me anyway), no metal bits bashing around, and no need to re-lash the knot every time. Just a suggestion.

I doubt you remember me, but you were an MT on the LMG when I went down to Palmer to winterover in '18 (I was down there last summer too). When we got on station, you did a Science Tuesday on cruising with your family when you were a kid-super deluxe! Anyway, it's been fun following you around the world since then.

A couple of things, Jaqueline on Solo Sailing ….. , also a Grinde, stores her anchor chain in the cockpit locker so hauls the anchor by the stern, so that brings up the possibility of anchoring from the stern which means better airflow through the boat in the heat. The other thing is that Burke Marine have some awesome windsurfing boots at the moment. I bought one pair but am going to order a second pair to have running shoe soles fitted.

Some more thoughts on the dingy painter subject. If you board ship alongside I found a painter 3x the dinghy with an alpine butterfly knot tied inline at a point that allows the dinghy to sit alongside when this knot is attached to a mid cleat near the stays works well. Then you run the rest of the line that is forward of that mid knot back to the rear cleat. This way, when the wind picks up or you want to get underway, you simply take the butterfly knot off the mid cleat and allow it to fall onto its completely then unfurled line off the rear cleat. When you want to get back in the dinghy you just pull in the line, leaving the end still attached on the rear cleat, an attach the butterfly back to the mid cleat. This way the dinghy always remains attached when moving it around and most of the time has two anchor points. An additional shorter line from the rear of the dinghy to the rear cleat of the boat when alongside and a fender at the ladder stops that hideous swing and bang you get at night in slack winds or rolly anchorages.

Like your material and your style. You should look at the back, UV stabilized polypropylene, which does a lot better in sun than the yellow stuff. For sure, floating line is much, much better -- especially if you use the engine to set the anchor, but polypro doesn't like UV. Also, it doesn't hurt to rig some kind of safety connection to the beefy central attachment on the dink. Those glued on patches aren't nearly as strong.

When we were sailing in the Caribbean we would tie to the dingy dock with extra line so more dingies could tie to the dock. What are your thougbts on that? And how often do you lock your dingy to the dock?
@pmnfernando

use barrel knots instead of bowlines, make them cinch up really good then whip the tail like you did with the bowline. you end up with a tight bight aroud the hardware meaning less chafe

As you are heading into croc country, I know that I would have 2 lines to tow a dinghy. Swimming to shore to recover a dinghy is not an option.

Towing painter should be nylon which acts as a shock absorber because it is able to stretch about 20% before breaking. Polypropolene (which floats) has 0% stretch.
@mikestevens9455
@mikestevens9455 5 күн бұрын
poly is fine for a painter if replaced yearly…BUT it must be spliced around eyes at dinghy plus hers will break at that central knot which should be spliced and whipped…note poly is easy to splice but takes extra bury and whipping because slip. while you are at it spliced a large carabiner at end, its instant when appraching in a current or strange boat.

Those rings will pull off in no time at all in the tropics. You should have a centreline back to the welded attachment point in the centre of the aluminium bottom.

F There is much advantage to wrapping your line around whatever twice as it reduces chafe. for instance the towing bales on your dinghy and the line to line connections etc Regards Don
