I'm back to sognametal with an instrumental cover of a Windir song. I picked 1184 not only because it's one of my favorite song but also because of all the cool guitar harmonies, groovy bass lines, epic keyboards and stuff...
Also I took the liberty to make a few little changes during the arpeggios part and the atmospheric/folk break (no accordion sorry...). Hopefully it won't ruin the song :)

My first Windir song tbh, and I was amazed because I had only just gotten into black metal and - as a bassist - I liked being able to finally hear bass AND some perfect melodies. Great cover, sounds like the original!

Thanx man! I really love Windir, its really a special band for me! I never thought this guy used 4 guitars in his songs, its like a wall of harmonics

Same here mate. If you listen carefully to the original song there is indeed 4 guitars, usually this would sound like a total mess (especially with electric guitars) if you don't know what you are doing. Valfar's was such a great composer!

my man valfar really yeeted on people with his chord usage, great cover man a question: how did you do all those keyboard parts (harp etc.) so accurately? that's insane
@augure86
@augure86 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The chords he used fit the harmony very well, it's not random "cool" and "weird" sounding chords put together with no connection between them. For keyboards, I didn't try to match the sound of the original song, instead I made a small string arrangement using various melody lines played on the guitar in other section of the song. Hopefully that worked pretty well.

it did man, i want to be as good as you at figuring stuff like this by ear. is your ability to play these songs etc based on some advanced theory knowledge or just ear developing over time?
@augure86
@augure86 6 жыл бұрын
Kaan Taskintuna Both I'd say. Developing your relative pitch (ear training) is really useful for any musician. I started years ago doing tabs and covers, it takes a lot time but it's very rewarding in the end. Over the last years, I got into music theory and orchestration. I'm nowhere near an expert on the subject but it's very helpful if you want to compose music, make arrangements, etc.... Check Rick Beato youtube channel it's a goldmine for this kind of stuff. Don't hesitate if you have questions I like to talk about that topic.

Thank you! I didn't either until I made this cover. Having 4 electric guitars playing individual lines without sounding like a total mess needs really good songwriting skills.

All that perfectionism is killing my perfectionist eyes hehe, it's fuckin stunning! I died at the bass part, didn't expect that, it's 100% perfect work, hats down! Now I'm in an extreme need to REdo a drum cover of this song:-)

SOGNAMETAL1984 Haha thank you my friend! Recording the bass lines was really fun. I put the bass a bit louder in the mix compared to the Cor Scorpii covers, it's a tricky instrument to mix ;-)
@SOGNAMETAL

The simple things that matter the most, those six seconds of extremely melodic bass parts added a stunning atmosphere to the song and that's how Windir's music remains timeless and one of a kind comparing to any other extreme metal band, you nailed that part and that's what I like in your covers, caring about the smallest details, I could have died twice if you came up with an accordion too, I won't be surprised and I can expect anything now hehe.
@augure86
@augure86 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Funny thing is that I always disliked accordion until I heard Byrjing for the first time. It created such a beautiful atmosphere that would be hard to match with any other instrument. For 1184 I saw Strom playing the accordion part on the guitar during live show and it was really epic, so I thought I'd do the same as I don't have an accordion.

Then freakin do it!:-) I wish if I could play guitars too, I have an acoustic and an electric guitar to jam from now and then, but it's not very pleasing to see hehe.

Was there any post processing on the guitars? Sounds like maybe there was a bit of reverb on the rhythm guitar parts?

No post processing on the guitar. If I recall well the main riff was quad tracked using two differents amps so it could explain why it sounds like there is some effect.
