My new Firewire card (Startech 3 port 1394 Express Firewire card - it says compatible with Win10) will not show up in the device manager of my new Win10 Pro machine. I have read that TI chipsets can be an issue and that VIA has been more consistently working with Win10. I also read that many people don't care for VIA and recommend the TI chipset. Microsoft pushed so hard to get everyone on Windows 10, and then crap like this happens. I know that Firewire is old tech now, but lots of devices still in use need a working Firewire port. I'm struggling with this problem, too: I already HAVE had success ripping DV via both of my internal PCIe firewire cards, using legacy drivers and WinDV and also Adobe Premiere. Then, after a while, I tried to rip a new batch of tapes - and nothing worked anymore. Same config in every aspect as far as I can tell, even after installing a second Windows 10 instance without all the updates but the legacy drivers - no dice. Now I'm thinking about one of those old USB Pinnacle MovieBoxes with FireWire ports - has anyone had any experience with these things? Do they, more or less, guarantee success in this endeavour?

May I ask, does your camera show up in Device Mgr? Seems worth a punt on the Startech or similar. Which PCIe FireWire cards do you have? @@terryglynn4380 , the camera did actually show up in device manager back when it worked, now even this doesn't happen anymore. I'm using an ELEGIANT1cz9Xfd81 and a Digitus DS-30201-3, both of which show up okay in DM and I've tried all the different driver combinations, including the legacy ones. Regarding the Pinnacle solution - I was thinking about this because it actually has a FireWire input, for digital transfers, they're not one of those analog S-video grabbers, so I hope that this would give me the same results as with the internal FW cards. Concerning the video format, I don't think there was any sort of conversion; with Premiere I've used the "DV" preset and saved the material in .AVI containers without any reencoding, as far as I know. Same thing with WinDV, the application just streamed the data from the camcorder into an .AVI file and that was it, no recalculation of any kind.

This is a reply to Joshua Sutherland's comment and question of two days ago. Hi Joshua! This may be a "re-post" of my reply/comments/questions of a couple of days ago. I seems that I may have not pressed the right button so, here it goes again (NOTE: If this really is a repeat of that message, please disregard - I'll wait for your response). I have tried using my Panasonic AJ-D230H, DVC Pro format via FW 400 connections on all three Win10 machines, with no luck. Several years ago I was using it with success using a Grass Valley Canopus DV Raptor card on a Windows NT (Pentium 3-400Hz) machine, but now I find myself in need of reconnecting the AJ-D230H machine to my Win10 computers, and I've had absolutely no luck. I would consider cannibalizing my old machines and the old video cards currently in storage, but would prefer not to (a lot of time and effort that might not pan out). One thing that might be an issue is the FW driver: my cards show "Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller". About 3:00 into your video, you mention verbally as well as show on screen that your drivers are "VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller". Is that because of the chipset used in the manufacture of your card, or is it a driver that I could download and update? Another item (YT video) that I've found that might help understand what's going on, albeit not solving the problem, is a comment by another YT Contributor who states, "...DVC Pro FW cards did not comply to the DV standard, so you were somewhat limited" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX3JfKeOrp2Jm6s) at 6:15 into his video. I'll continue looking, but your input is very much appreciated. Please let me know your thoughts...Thanks!!
@joshua.sutherland3 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the late response. Only just now saw this. The VIA driver is due to the use of a VIA chipset. Chipset seems to be a main contributor to whether or not a given FW card will work or not. Unfortunately, I believe I've seen that the same card can come with either chipset at times. My original card was a TI if I'm not mistaken, and replacing with the VIA worked. There is an alternative method using Thunderbolt, if that appeals to you. I have a video linked in the description above where you can check out that solution. I haven't attempted it myself yet, but it may be more approachable for most.

As Joshua Sutherland said, OBS isn't suited to this. From memory, I think it was Microsofts 'Photo legacy' app that was easiest for me in Windows 11 - it may have even opened automatically when I connected the camera. VLC also worked for me, but I think it showed a blank screen during the process - it did copy the video successfully however. You could also try the free WinDV app(it's been around a very long time), which is solely for capturing from or sending to a DV camcorder. It didn't work for me *but* I was using a Pinnacle USB device which is a odd beast that converts the firewire signal(only for DV I assume). You will often also get play, fast forward etc controls(when the camera is in 'vcr'/play/whatever mode, which is important) on the computer when connected with suitable software, as it sends the control signals over the firewire connection. It's quite different from analog or hdmi etc captures.

Since it's 1080i, I'm not sure you'd really want to use the XH-A1, but it is kinda fun to play with from a technology perspective. The biggest drawback is the XH-A1 doesn't have an SDI output (which would make it easy) like the XH-G1 does. But it does appear to still have an HD out terminal. So you'd have to get the output from the HD terminal, and then a converter or two to get it to a format you could ingest it on your computer. Something like a Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Analog to SDI, and then an SDI card for your desktop, I'd probably give that a try.

So i found and oul computer with firewire built in, i then removed it and have had to get an internal 9 pin to usb, and from there a male usb to male!!

apparently you can do Firewire to USB C - Thunderbolt. Google it.

Hi. So what editing software does our XHA1 prefer? Im asking because since my pentium4 1.5gz. and down converting HD to SD, I haven't been able to put tapes to hard drives. I just got a new windows 10 desktop built with FireWire card, one of your card recommendations and finally both are recognized. Vantec 1394a as Texas instruments and XHA1 as Microsoft DV cam. So how about it? Recommend a video editing suite? Please. Thank-you

Yeah, so I used to use Premiere Pro since I had a copy from the CS5 Master Collection. Back when you could buy it outright. I've since switched over to DaVinci Resolve. Resolve is great in that Black Magic offers a free version, as well as a paid. It's a one-time purchase for lifetime updates. If you're looking for a good NLE, I'd definitely give it a look.

The problem is not the hardware. Its finding an dvcam capture program that works with my TI firewire card. Most people don't have adobe OnLocation. This is not terribly helpful if youre going to use a program that nobody has. Wasn't so long ago you could capture DVcam with a windows accessorie.
@joshua.sutherland4 жыл бұрын
Fair point. OnLocation is something that I've had access to for more than a decade, and I'm familiar with it, so it's worked well enough. However, your comment got me looking, and I found Exsate DV Capture Live. It appears to interface much better with my old Sony DCR-TRV520, and basically manages the entire import of a tape on it's own.

@@joshua.sutherland How did you find that so fast? I've been looking for 3 hours and all I've found is a hundred different programs to capture the screen! But nothing to capture DVcam. Thank you so much!!!! I'm already capturing.

@@Robert08010 You're welcome! Found a reference to alternativeto.net on a form for another piece of software that's no longer available, but found Exsate listed.

@@joshua.sutherland That's a very useful site, thank you. If you're interested, I've just opened a 20 minute long DVcam avi clip inside of Davinci Resolve 16 - which I heard was impossible. I was told Resolve does not support AVI at all. So glad they were wrong! The Resolve capture window would not even open as It didn't see my Sony DVcam but it has no trouble at all with importing what I have captured with Exsate.

Search for a Firwire Card from a Dell System, one without additional Powerconnector. Every Firewirecard with additional Power is not a Firewire400, it faster and will not work properly under windows 10. Dell Has got a windows 10 Driver for their Card.

I found HDVSplit worked for my Canon XH A1, and WinDV for my old Sony DCR-TVR520. You'll have to see what works for your setup. Check out www.videohelp.com/software/sections/dv for other options. Hope one of them works for you!

I recently found Exsate DV Capture Live. I've actually changed over to using that, as it works super conveniently with the Sony.

I got the same exact brand same card except it’s B at the end instead of A. Never worked at all with windows 10. Tried everything. Gave up and moved on. The reason I got the card I got was because I was connecting audio FireWire devices, not video like most FireWire users. It was absolutely supposed to work, and Startech’s good! But it can’t because Windows. And so the $80 card sits in my closet for 2 years and counting.

You need to install legacy drivers

Are you shitting me ? $115 dollars for that card ??? My old computer still works. It has windows xp on it. and I gave ? $12 for the card years ago. Might be a pain but I will just use my old computer then save it to a flash drive and then pop it into the new computer.
@joshua.sutherland4 жыл бұрын
This is quite unfortunate. The card was $33.21 when I purchased back in March 2019. 350% increase in price leads me to think it must not be being produced anymore perhaps. The second link did provide a number of other cards that should work as well.

Your PCIE card needs to have a NEC chipset to work.
