The Windows 10 Update Assistant worked for me. You can download it at the official Microsoft website here (if you don't want to trust my link, just google search "Windows 10 Update Assistant"): www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Then on that website where it says "Windows 10 May 2020 Update" click the blue button that says "Update Now" and it will download the Update Assistant titled "Windows10Upgrade9252.exe" (numbers at end may be different if you're downloading this later than today's date). Run that and it will manually download and install the upgrade without using the actual Windows Update service. Worked like a charm for me.

Great presentation followed with a confident possible solution. 3 in fact. What I learned overnight after I calmed down is you don't know what's going on. By that I mean nothing ugly or condescending. The reality that I have serious challenges repairing my laptop and you have a solution (3 actually). Clearly I couldn't have knee jerked quicker. These experiences are humbling. It was equivalent to having shared symptoms as others and me deciding to take whatever medicine that healed them. Always learning. Hopefully i deleted my comments in time. Lol

My PC suffered the same failure to install update 1909 and would go through the motions but never get past 91%. It would take several hours to get to the 91% point and just freeze requiring the machine to be switched off and then restarted, where it would remove the changes made and I'd be back to square one again. I messed about with it for months before I found this tutorial. I tried Solution 1, but that didn't work for me. A couple of weeks later I tried Solution 2 and now everything has installed correctly and my PC is up to date again. Thank you.

Hands up! Who experienced that windows troubleshooter would fix anything? I'm in IT for about 20 years now and I can count on one of my hands how many times it helped or to restart the service. To delete the softwaredistribution folder only frees up space, no use at all. Please, post these videos only, if you really mean to help, not just to collect likes!!!

​@@alphalion188 Unfortunately couldn't. It happened the same thing before, when a Win 10 upgrade could not be installed, then I did it from scratch, but I wanted to avoid that this time. I even moved my SSD to another computer to do it, but did not work. I guess Win 10 hates my SSD.

Thanks very much. The first solution worked for me on an Acer Aspire. I had to add an external hard drive for more space, but until I carried out your recommended fix the computer did not give the option of adding an external drive to create the necessary space. After the fix, it did.

When I install 1909 on windows 10 it downloads completely fine in the beginning but then it gets stuck on 48% and blue screens and does “undoing changes to your computer” and then goes back to my login screen but doesn’t update my pc to update 1909. Any suggestions?

I dont know what really worked for me, but i did two things that solved the black screen issue when updating windows 10 1909 update, on an HP spectre 360 laptop: 1. Disable the secure boot option from the bios menu (located at the security options) press escape to acces bios menu when strting the computer; and 2. Disconnected the usb wireless mouse. Try this only if you get a black screen with nothing else, during the 1909 update process (for instance 27 por cent, suddenly complete black screen).

The Windows 10 Update Assistant worked for me. The first solution worked for my husband, but not for me. I had done updates on all the larger laptops but the mini Acer Inspire was frustrating me to the point of junking it. It was failing to install 1903 due to lack of space, thence failing on 1909. Finally we thought together about taking out the SD card and reformatting a 1tB external drive. Failure again, but I checked the formatting which turned out to be FAT32, thus not enough space. Reformatted NTFS and bingo. 1903 installed and then 1909. This resulted in 10gb of space on the tiny hard drive and much quicker functioning. But heck, I'm not looking forward to the 2004 updte which is rumoured to be massive.

Try checking the plug for your audio that goes into the back of your computer. It could just be loose. Sometimes it feels like it's pushed in all the way, but a little extra force will push it in further. There are also other youtube videos about fixing audio crackling. If none of those work, you may need to buy yourself what's called a "Ground Loop Noise Isolator" that costs around $5 to $15 USD. I had the issue happen when an update installed the HD audio drivers on my PC. Because it was HD, I could hear the difference in the grounding frequency. Some audio devices ground and output audio at different hertz and sometimes when you get HD audio, this difference between your computer and speakers becomes noticeable. I don't want you wasting money you don't have to. So youtube other possible fixes. But if all else fails, you might have to do like I did. I ended up buying the Mpow Ground Loop Noise Isolator for like $8 on newegg or amazon. I forget which one. Any version might work. So pick whatever version you like. I only mention the brand because it worked for me. But I don't work for them. So if you find cheaper and ratings are good, then go for that brand. But save that as a last option. It took me a week of googling and researching before I figured out there was a device that fixes it. So just saving you time in case no other software fix works.

Use the "Windows 10 Update Assistant" which you can google and download free from the Microsoft website. It'll be a blue button to download it. Then run the program that downloads and it should hopefully work. The Update Assistant bypasses the Windows Update Service and does it manually. So even if you don't have the service, it should hopefully work.

Microsoft Windows is so stupid OS, The only solution is to make bootable iso 1909 usb disk, format and install Windows from scratch drivers apps etc. I have tried everything nothing is working.Its much more faster to reinstall it than to try alternative solutions.

Have you made any advanced fine tuning such as gaming settings, disabling certain Services, made changes via Regedit, blocking MS spying etc.? Somewhere there among the all the possible settings you have done possibly lies the problem that disrupts installing Win updates. I had that persisten install issue which I couldn't fix in any way until I left Windows as it is. Since then not a single update installation errors. This maybe is not a problem in your PC because there are more problems than only that I had.
