When I had some free time to take a look at Windows 8, I realized that I couldn't be impartial. The thing blows, and in this cartoon illustration, I show exactly why.
Contains naughty words, and graphic employee ID card violence.
My background is in tech journalism and B2B tech marketing. I'd love to produce one of these videos for your company - contact brian.boyko@gmail.com if you're interested. I also do live video in the Austin area.

I was laid off from Microsoft, I'm pissed at them for it, but I still can't say that Windows 8 is unusable. The modern shell is the only thing that pisses me off and I disable that with 'ClassicStart' or 'Start8' and overall I find it much faster! I do agree it was a step backwards in a few areas in the UI but the advances in the desktop explorer were huge to me.

With Windows 8, Microsoft took what made Windows awesome and removed it. The exact opposite of innovation. Honestly, what were they thinking!? And why does Vista get more hate when compared to this. When using multiple programs at once, why isn't there a clearly visible place where I can switch to and exit them? Why is there a start screen? Theres really no definite central place for all your needs like the explorer, and tiles are pointless. Why is there a charms bar when the start bar had all your folders, programs, control panel and a built-in search bar? So many questions. If it ain't broke don't fix it. They tried to make everything more intuitive, but they did the complete opposite. Windows 7 had this near-perfect experience that only should have been tweaked in a Windows 8. I can't believe people cannot come to realize this.

I do not understand half of what you said. When you are using multiple programs they all appear on your taskbar just like XP, Vista, and 7. When you use Apps they are full screen and you have to toggle the bar by putting your mouse to the left or using the traditional Alt Tab shortcut. The app part of Windows 8 needs work for mouse and keyboard users but that is not an issue for people who want a faster version of Windows 7 because you can fully ignore apps if you want. The Start Screen functions just like the Start Menu and better. Just as if you were in Windows XP and up you hit your Start Button and type to search or click on the programs and apps you have set up. I do not understand what you mean by "Theres really no definite central place for all your needs like the explorer" because Windows 8 has a File Explorer just like Windows 7 and Vista.

Richard Couillard The Windows 8 Start Screen and apps do not correspond well with the norm desktop and explorer that we've come to know. The start screen is masked over Windows, and your apps do not show up as tasks in your desktop. Windows 8.1 still will not let you disable the start screen or enable a start menu. Everything this guy says in the video is completely rational and understandable.

Windows 8.1 is barely an improvement on Windows 8. It has a make-believe start icon where the start button should be. Virtually everything else you said in this video is just as true about 8.1. Incidentally, I'm sure you've probably found out already, but to close those Metro apps, you grab them at the top with your mouse and drag them down off the bottom of the page. Utterly stupid, and much harder with a touchpad. And no, I haven't "gotten used" to the ribbon. And holy crow, I thought the ribbon was bad. And then they committed Office 2013 against us. It's like they're having a contest to see who can fuck up the users the most.

Lisa Liel Actually in Windows 8.1 if you put your mouse at the top of the screen while a metro app is open, a title bar shows up with an x in the corner that you can use to close windows the traditional way.

Techmo906 Agreed, mine takes a couple of seconds the first time, milliseconds afterwards, but if a programme freezes up due to an error (loads of resources free), it freezes up. The biggest flaw is actually the fact the Task Manager is suppose to be lightweight. I can't imagine what would happen if a rendering programme all of a sudden decided to stop rendering, with GPU, CPU and RAM at full capacity

There are so many people stating that people who are saying Windows 8 sucks are just not willing to learn to adapt. And partially they are right. But from a professional point of view you gotta say that introducing a new system that withdraws a lot of previously established UI concepts people got used to means that you have to teach employees how to use the new system. That means upgrade costs + costs for the lessons (loss of worktime). Then you have to see that Windows 7 was may more customizable. The way things are organized in Windows 8 results in working tasks taking longer (e.g. open specific file on a server, start another application), and I mean the time the user takes to get where he wants to go, not the actual loading time. Windows 8 is a system for private users not for working environment (custom bureau use, Office, banking software, ERP-Software, file import/export). Gesture controls are not meant for working environments. Period.

I found this video by typing in "Windows 8 sucks". I just bought a new computer and it came with the crappy Windows 8. I couldn't get it to do anything, and when I did figure out how to do a few things thing's; everything is much harder, and requires more steps! What you could do with a single mouse click in Vista, now takes going through 3 screens! It's bullshit to end a program by dragging it to the bottom of the screen, and just keep it running in the background forever and ever! I had to print out how to add an email address, because it is very complicated, not just a mouse click like before! Screens that I didn't call for keep opening up, and I don't even know what I accidently did to open them up, and then I can't figure out how to get out of them. I want an "X" in the upper right hand corner to shut a program down! Unplugging the computer, and taking out the battery is the only way you can be sure it is turned off! Is there a patch you can install to make Windows 8 act like ANY other earlier operating system? Even Windows 95 or DOS were much much better! Windows 8 is pure crap! (IMHO)

***** Thank you for the reply. Win 8 has been so cumbersome to use that this is the first time that I have used my computer for entertainment in 2 weeks. I have installed as many updates and improvements to Win8.1, all that I could find, including Start8. I now have something that “feels like” Win7 with touch screen, and now Win8 has become more serviceable. Incidentally, I was hit by a “Polymorphic” virus that will only attack Windows 8, and can only be repaired with a line by line manual rewrite in Win8. MacAfee cannot see that virus, so it gets right past your anti-virus software! I had to sign up with Microsoft’s repair service for 6 months to get them to repair my computer, at a cost of $249.99! It took a Microsoft tech using remote control on my computer 4 hours (working in MS-DOS mode) to repair the damage that had been done. Windows 8 is exactly the same as suddenly waking up in a country where you don’t speak the language, and you don’t know the customs, and I still hate it in spite of all my repairs! You shouldn't need to go through all the effort of creating your own operating system in order to be comfortable with a new computer!

I hate windows 8. If you use Windows 8, the best trick you can learn is to use the Win+R to bring up the run command, and just run everything from that... notepad, iexplore, mspaint, calc, charmap, cmd, explorer, taskkill, winword, excel, outlook... Learn as program run names as possible. Even learn to shut down via command prompt.

1barnet1 Run commands are hardly difficult. If an executable is located in the Windows directory, you can just type is straight in and hit enter. It will run. If you get it wrong, an error message will inform you, and the operation will be aborted. No harm done. PS: I'm certainly no techie. My server is over five years old, and the network is only 100mb. My domain only have six computers, and eight users on it, so it's just average level knowledge.

Give that same mother a W8 pc and she will be annoyed feel dumb and be helpless. That's the difference between a good UI and a very bad one. That said i prefer Android.

Win8 is slow but XP was better? WinXP was Win2000 with a whole bunch of shitty eye candy slapped on. Besides Win8, XP was the biggest step backward in UI design in MS history. I'm guessing you ran it on a multi-threaded machine and a few gigabytes of RAM, even though it was launched back when most people were still running a 120MHz Pentium, which is why you THINK it was fast. There's a whole lot of problems with Win8 but the backend performance is not one of them. You expose your ignorance.

The Windows 7 and Vista graphic user interface builds on all of Microsoft's previous work. Windows 8 throws out all the genius replacing it with a inferior interface. Have you ever tried to use the traditional Windows UI on a touch screen, or using a pointing device similar to a Nintendo Wii remote or XBOX gamepad? Have you ever used an old Windows phone or tablet that used the traditional Windows UI? That is where you will see the superiority of the Windows 8 UI because the old UI is far more clumsy and difficult to use. Microsoft understands that people are moving more towards mobile devices, so it makes sense that they would try to make the UI more mobile friendly. They also understand that having one consistent UI across multiple platforms (phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, gaming consoles) makes it easier for users to use each of them due to their similarity. Children will be able to learn to use a tablet, and then easily transfer that knowledge to a desktop because it will have the same UI. It might cause a bit of confusion with people who are stuck in the past and slow to adapt to change, but it was the exact right move for Microsoft to make.

@shutupjade0420 11 жыл бұрын
proviste alain Here's the thing. I'd like to upgrade my system without having to relearn everything that has been established from system to system. In the past, Microsoft had an integrated tutorial that explained everything in there system, from Windows XP up to Windows 7. That was very useful for me. Because when I got XP, I was a) only 10 years old and b) had grown up using Windows 95. I got Windows Vista when I was 14. By that time I was an expert with everything that XP had introduced. I was lost with Vista as soon as I saw Aeros and my first thought was "What the fuck am I supposed to do?" The tutorial and help package Microsoft had wrapped up in the software soon put me at ease and I was able to cope with the new GUI as well as the new locations for things like Control Panel and such. Windows 7, well, actually, I was able to slide into 7 without a problem because it was not too far different from Vista aside from very few actually changes and many functionality fixes. However, I booted up my first Windows 8 machine and I had a flash back to 7 years ago. "Where the fuck am I? Where's the desktop? There! Now, where's the start button. How am I supposed to return to the menu? Uh..." And well, you get the idea. I didn't login to the system to a window that said, welcome to Windows 8, please view this very helpful documentation we put together for you to get yourself acquainted with the assfuckery we've put together. Long explanation short: I always read the manual, this time, I could not find one. As, 1) the machine I logged in on was at work and my boss had already thrown that out into the trash, and 2) Microsoft didn't deem it fit to continue a very helpful trend between their previous systems and this one.

I bought my new computer about 3 months ago. It was $1000, so I was more than a little disappointed to hear it came preinstalled with Windows 8. I asked the computer guy at Future Shop (where I bought it) if there was an option to downgrade to Windows 7. This was his response: "Why would you want to downgrade?" I said "if you knew anything about computers you wouldn't be asking that question." (Also, who's bright idea was it to hire that guy as a computer specialist??!!)

+Madison Merritt What? Why would they check for Windows 9. It would say it isn't Windows 9, they should be checking for Windows 95. Anyway all they would have to do if that was a problem is release a version called Windows 9.1.
@jeremystyers
@jeremystyers 9 жыл бұрын
+Togmeister You're obsessively not a programmer. But as one myself I can answer that. When checking which ver. of windows you have programs check the name not the number (in 98 and 95). That means a lot of apps are coded to check if your os name starts with Windows 9 since 98 and 95 both do. If they called it Windows 9 those programs would think it's Windows 98 or 95 and install incorrectly. Microsoft could have forced developers to rewrite the apps but instead chose not to and moved to Windows 10. That's a good thing on Microsoft's part as they keep saying they want people to develop more apps, and people wouldn't be to quick to make new apps when they have to rewrite their old ones from a verrrryyyy long time ago.
@togmeister8604
@togmeister8604 9 жыл бұрын
jeremy styers Actually I do program (desktop not web with C++ and SFML mainly). I see no logical reason to check if it begins with 9 and not just check to see if it equals 98 or that. That's just bad programming because it's not compatible if they did create Windows 9.

I've used almost every computer OS out there, so I think I know what I'm talking about. Windows 8 blows. It's not bad because it's different, it's bad because it's bad. It's fucking horrible beyond belief. It blows on so many different levels I don't know where to begin. I bought one Win 8 machine because we needed a new infrastucture machine at work. For anything that humans use we try to stick to MAC. But for some of the dumber functions like print servers and file servers, windows should be just fine. So we got a new windoze 8 machine, and it blows. The damn thing came pre-installed with viruses and malware from Frys. The new desktop is nothing but a bunch of tiles advertising shit I don't want. It's super annoying. The old Linux KDE desktop of years ago is better. Total garbage. So I reject the notion that if you don't like windows 8 it's because you hate microsoft or you can't figure out how to use a new thing. It's garbage through and through.

Man you lasted way longer on this OS then I did. It only took me 20 mins to realize that I didn't want to have anything to do with it. And that was just me trying to help my friend figure out what his damn specs were. It's impossible to navigate, and doesn't give you *any* help trying to figure it out. If you have to go to a third party to get information about a system that is supposed to be designed to assist you in getting information, there is something terribly wrong. Btw, the arguments of "You can install apps" or "It takes time and patience to learn to use it"...You know those arguments aren't points in 8's favor, right? "Maybe if I read enough manuals and install enough crap to this system I might be able to get it to work half right sometimes." and "Maybe if I spend a month messing around with all these buttons that the system doesn't explain at all perhaps I can memorize what they do." The problem isn't with the user, the problem is with the interface. I do a lot of gaming, painting, video editing, and rendering on my computers. That requires a ton of back and forth navigation, and it is convenient to be able to simply double click an icon than it is to travel to 50 different menus trying to open things.

Having a consistent UI on desktops, servers, tablets, and even phones will make it easier for people to transition from one to another. A child can learn to use a tablet, and then a desktop, and then eventually become a sysadmin because the server will be familiar to them. Another benefit is that you can manage your server on your tablet with the same UI as the server. If you've ever tried to use a traditional desktop UI on a tablet you'll know it isn't easy. A tablet UI on a desktop is easier.

Once you realize five things: swipe gestures, sidebar, start, search and metro vs desktop; you can do everything you once did in windows 7. The real question is once I get used to an operating system can it make me work faster. Windows 8 has ts biggest problems in the areas of signed drivers and recovery media.

A good litmus test is to ask a regular user to get to the Control Panel. Using the Metro Start, it's 4 clicks (and those aren't intuitive or obvious); with the Vista/7 Start menu, it was two, and it was in the first place you'd look. As people have said, it's fine once you figure out how to customize the Metro Start, but out of the box, it's completely unintuitive.
