All I can say as a IT Support guy since 2007, is that till Windows 8/8.1 appeared with Defender built in, I was doing 3-4 malware cleans/rebuilds a week. Since then with 10 and 11, it's now 3-4 a year and most of those are just adware or a sanity check to delete a legit remote app off a laptop some guy from India made them install. What I like about Windows Defender on Windows 10 and 11, is you don't have to do anything! It goes to work, keeps its mouth shut, runs in the background, only alerts you when needed, and doesn't slow down your PC. If you are carful online, Windows Defender is all that you need. For a reasonably internet-capable individual, Defender on it's own is 'good enough'. If you aren't certain, get Malwarebytes as a free user and anytime you have a feeling, run a scan. No AV can detect EVERYTHING. While a malwarebytes scan might not catch it before damage is done, it CAN catch it fast enough for you to mitigate damage of most types. The kinds of things that can brute force Defender are just as likely to brute force any given other active protection.

I am an IT professional and even I keep a good product like BD on my personal systems. Never know who's going to do what with your system and sometimes I like to get careless with gaming mods, try out different ai stuff etc. Not so much cracked software, but you do download alot of stuff from here and there to get some of that stuff going. It only takes a split second after one of those info stealers execute to steal your session cookies and you have lost everything. Those types of links need to be blocked before you can even visit them like we saw with Malwarebytes here. That said, Windows defender is much better than nothing as you said. There are plenty of people who don't know anything about this stuff and never install any protection for the life of their systems, it is good to have that built in and running by default. Side note, many malware programs do target and successfully disable it as apart of their infection. I have seen this cause chaos in an enterprise environment multiple times because all they had was Windows defender and ended up with trickbot spreading everywhere.

What everyone has to remember is that you are the security and that AV is just a tool and you use and demonstrate are only tools and we are only as good in ways we use those tools. So it's necessary to keep learning as changes come and go and to stay on top of threats and evolve as everything evolves. Always looking for new ways to combat this assault it's a constant struggle protecting our information and financial privacy.

I am using Defender only barring the occassional manual scan with MWB but even then 90 % is not 100 %, even if the missed threats weren't major and no malware processes were running. I'd kind of want to see a follow up of trying to run the threats Defender missed one-by-one, did Defender just miss them due to the overload of malware being ran at the same time or does it simpy omit those instances. Defender relies on cloud analysing yeah but even then I'd want to see it work more like "this process is on hold until it is considerd safe" instead of "there are so many processes trying to run that some might slip through". Also MWB being smart enough to determine the threats were being run by a script and terminate the script itself is quite impressive to me, exactly what you'd want from your AV.

While WD just has the biggest 'reach'. So in a way. having a reputable 3rd party virus scanner wouldn't be bad for higher risk work.
