It's not as hard as this video suggests anymore. You don't need Thunderbolt. You can use the Belkin charge & sync cable (made for VR) and everything with the Studio Display will work with just one cable (to the Studio Display anyway) - webcam, speakers, USB-C ports, 5K@60Hz. Lots of folks have had success using this. Then you can just install bootcamp drivers on your PC and you'll get brightness control too. You just need a relatively recent GPU that supports DSC, namely Navi or later GPUs from AMD or RTX GPUs from NVIDIA.

AMD machines don't have Thunderbolt, but an Intel PC of similar caliber probably WOULD have Thunderbolt and be able to run the display just fine from iGPU. Sure, we are pushing a ton of pixels, but it's only 60 Hz and that's really the most annoying aspect of the Mac right now... Macs can only support 4K60 and 5K60 and even the 32" XDR display is still only 60 Hz. In terms of display support, it's the Mac that suffers today. We already know the 16" M1 Pro can do 120 Hz on built-in display. @melmeiro2 жыл бұрын
In my understanding, Apple Studio Display is more like the “infamous” LG UltraFine 4K (24-inch) and 5K (second version) monitors that were lined up next to Apple computers. Just like LG’s UltraFine lineup, Mac Studio Display will behave nicely if you manage to send video and data signals from the same cable. Both Huawei and Belkin’s charge and sync cable for Huawei’s VR Glass do a great job when it comes to catering for those in this scenario. It is simple, plug & play. Unlike a Thunderbolt 3 & 4 add-on card, you are free from all the hiccups that come with software issues. Brightness, audio and additional USB ports also work very well. The only downside is you are limited to USB 2.0 on those USB ports. The second alternative is Club 3D’s “CAC 1332” HDMI cable. From my readings through the Internet, this cable might have a second iteration that does not have a USB additional data cable anymore. So, be cautious. But the first iteration works like charm without any hiccups. If you happen to have a Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X or S, or Playstation 5, you are good to go with this cable. For those PC users also, this cable will work very well. There is one downside though. You can no longer access to USB ports (so you are limited to audio). There are additional fourth and fifth alternative solutions that can actually help (if you are a desktop PC user). If you have a compatible motherboard, you can attach a Thunderbolt card. Unfortunately, not all computers are Thunderbolt 3 (or 4) compatible, so you might be out of luck. In the fourth and the last alternative, you use Delock 89582 PCI Express Card. This card is a re-branded version of Sunix UPD2018 in the EU market. Unfortunately, I do not have enough information about this product. In summary, Apple Studio Display will only come into your use if you go through these alternative solutions. If you are already a Mac user, and you really want to make this kind of monitors work, here is your endeavor waiting for you. But if you are a PC user, I do not recommend USB-C only monitors at all. They do not support KVM switch, and more importantly because they need macOS for software updates, you are going to have trouble. Addendum You can actually control brightness and additional settings thanks to ClickMonitor DDC. Unfortunately, the software development has apparently stopped, but it works great with MS Windows 11. If you are a Linux user, gDDCControl is quite useful.

@@destructodisk9074 Hi again! I am afraid that you may not be able to connect your Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck to your 27 inch Apple Thunderbolt Display. Unlike Apple's 6K and 5K monitors of its own (in addition to LG's 24 inch 4K and 27 inch 5k (of second iteration), this monitor does not accept display port signal at all in any case and only communicate through thunderbolt. It recognized the monitor, speakers, webcam, and microphone. At first it simply mirrors the main screen, but you can use the display settings to use it as an extended desktop. From what I understand, Linux has support for the studio display built into the latest kernels and there's a driver in testing to adjust the brightness. I have another PC that runs Linux Mint 21 and has USB-C, but it doesn't output the video over USB, no thunderbolt. When I connect that to the studio display, the speakers, webcam, and microphone are recognized and I can select them for use. I'm going to be upgrading that PC to a MB that has Thunderbolt 3, so it should work fully after that.

There should be an amendment at the 4 minute mark. In order to add a TB3 or TB4 card to a pc, you will need to ensure that your motherboard has a Thunderbolt header on the board, and then you can use it in conjunction with the PCIE x4 slot to add thunderbolt. The presence of a TB header on your MOBO can be found by going through the online manual for the motherboard. For AMD, it is primarily on High-End motherboards, but not guaranteed to be there. For intel Boards, it might be a little less rare.

I'm a photographer who rarely does video and I'm not familiar with all the size variables so I could really use the help...and thanks in advance.

Thank You SOOO much. I am a Mac user and own a Mac Studio with 2 apple 27 inch displays. I have also purchase a custom pc for animation work. I have two additional ultra fine 5K LG monitors and nothing I bought work with for the pc. I had giving up and purchased a PC monitor that Best Buy Indicated it will be perfect. I picked it up the monitor work but the colors and resolution were not good for what I do. I just order that cable... again.. thank you. Amazon indicated I will have the next day. I will definitely be returning that monitor I picked up from Best Buy. I believe is more of a gamers Monitor and not for what I needed... also curved.

Hello, I have MSI Stealth GS77 laptop. And this device has Thunderbolt 4 input. Do you think I can use Apple Studio Display on my laptop? :)
@6MonthsLater2 жыл бұрын
It should work if the port is thunderbolt and not just USB-C.

@@6MonthsLater Yes, it has both Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C ports. Can I use Apple Studio Display and Mac Studio M1 Ultra for modeling and rendering? Do you think it is better than MSI Stealth GS77 I7 12700H RTX 3070TI Laptop GPU in terms of performance? I'm a game developer. I use Blender and Subsatnace Painter. Thank you!!

Can I use this cable with a USB - C to HDMI, and plug it into my PS4 and use the Apple Studio Display??
@shadibultaip74462 жыл бұрын
How did the cable work while not being bidirectional? It looks like the displayport end of the cable is supposed to be plugged into the display and not the PC. Could you clarify? Thanks!
@6MonthsLater2 жыл бұрын
The bandwidth is enough on the cable for it to be bi-directional I guess. Most of the cables that are USB-C to DisplayPort work exactly as you described but this one seems to do the trick. Check out the link in the description to the blog post I mentioned that goes into more detail about the chord. It might explain how it works a bit better. - Josh

On my Windows 11 machine with Nvidia 3090ti, the brightness can't be adjusted and the display won't turn on automatically after boot up - I have to unplug and plug back in the USB-C cable. Perhaps I'm missing something?

The problem with using the Mac Studio Display with a Windows PC computer is that Apple company has its own way of doing things that are particular to Apple Mac. As a result this display will work fine with Apple Mac Computers, however to get this display to work with a Windows PC, the Windows PC will need to be equipped with the Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 video and sound output that Apple uses. Also to adjust brightness the Windows PC will need appropriate Windows Drivers to adjust the brightness.

The Thunderbolt devices usually come from intel, since intel and apple are the one who developed this technology.
@M220184 ай бұрын
The Only way to use this things without apple product are using Intel based CPU that support Thunderbolt Plugs, since Thunderbolt technology are developed by Intel And Apple.. So no wonders if you use the AMD Based CPU, you won't have any Thunderbolt plug since AMD didn't contribute to this technology.. Even when apple didn't using intel chip to power their mac lineup, They still can use the thunderbolt plug since they are one of the contributor.

Apple should start selling display controller for outside mac use case. I know it isn't a perfect solution, but so does using Apple product is (most of the time).

ok so I am considering upgrading my monitors and I am considering the studio's due to resolution and ppi -- my personal use and free lance work is off my 2021 MacBook Pro MAX 16' -- however my 9-5 main job, company provided laptop is windows... but it does run thunderbolt-- so I am hoping it would run maybe not seamlessly but at least smoothly... any insight from others who have hybrid setups like me...

you are right about windows, but this is a Mac made display meaning Mac OS is made for high pixel density , Gamers just want an ultravide 1440p display ... this display is great for video editing, productivity and watching movies, the sound is amazing like often with , but the price is really too high , I'm happy I found out a brand new one for less than 1300 euros instead of 1750...

That will probably be an entirely separate video or we'll cover it in the upcoming review next week. The best way to get this working that I've seen is in this post: superuser.com/questions/1725370/apple-studio-display-brightness-seemingly-at-maximum-when-connected-to-windows10 But the simplest way to adjust brightness is to adjust brightness on a Mac, then unplug the chord from the Mac and plug in the one from the Windows PC and the adjustment will carry over. - Josh

My employer has given us Surface Pros. I work in the office, but would like to work from home some days. I can't do this unless I can connect the Surface to a larger external display, as I can in the office. My display at home is an Apple Studio Display. I believe I need a Mini Display Port to Thunderbolt 3 cable to make this work, but they don't appear to exist.
