I switched to Linux Mint a few days ago after decades of using Windows up to Win 7 as I have no interest in Win10. It was a full install on an extra older pc while I become familiar with Linux. Once I'm comfortable, I plan to install Linux to my main pc. Chris's videos and the Linux Mint forum are helping a lot! Thank you.

Great video! About DX9 - there's project called D9VK,which translates DX9 to Vulkan. Young project, but you can run now games like Fallout 3. About less overhead - nope, translation between DX to OpenGL is a biggest overhead here, but some software works faster than on Windows

Another great video thanks for uploading this. I have to say having ditched windows for debian I haven't needed to use any of my old apps enough to warrant trying them in Wine but I might one day when I'm bored. It's a very remarkable piece of software and mighty impressive in what it does! I had to virtualise a failing antique Windows 95 pc some years ago (which is still in use) for some machinery control software. Makes me wonder now if Wine is an option for things running on dead platforms that won't run on modern Windows.

This is going to be a fantastic series. Every video in the series will be bookmarked for future use. So when you are looking for program dependencies, do you use the wine webpage or the software manufacturer as the best reference? Also, and I'm just asking for clarification...if DXVK was previously installed on the OS through the terminal, does that still mean it has to be installed for each wine bottle? When I check my version of wine, it says 3.6 which I think is old. What is the terminal command to update it in Arch? You touched on Wine32 and Wine64...when I am installing some dependacies through winetricks, I get errors saying they have issues with 64. Can we install both 32 and 64 and then choose which version to use for applicable software. Lots of questions but curious noob minds want to know. Good Sh*t bro!! Keep producing A+ content.

I'll take a peak at winehq but most times it's wrong. I look at the application requirements and only install those packages. Some applications require quite a bit of trial and error.

Great video! Many linux youtubers do not advise to use wine in principle. Did you manage to run the latest MS Office in wine? Everywehere i read it is not possible, only office 2010 or 2013 maybe. But that would be a game changer! 😁

I'm a recent adoptee of Mint 19.3 after almost 40 years of DOS/Windows systems. Dabbled with Ubuntu and Wine years ago and wrecked my system. Tried again a month ago and was happy to find that the current Wine loads and runs my essential Quicken just fine. Fine wine! But at age 73, and with the memory of crashing a system, I have not and do not intend to venture into Terminal. Fortunately, the new Wine functions with point and click installations and uses.

Being new to Linux I haven't tried to run Windows program in it yet, but it is definitely something I want to learn to do. This video was great to get an understanding of what is involved. Hi , great tutorial ! I would suggest 2 improvements : 1) You spend 25% of the video talking about the introduction. That's interesting but i'm here to learn how to setup it up ( which comes to down to the part after around 5:00 where you type code and we can see the result so , as a "beginner" ( I rarely use unix-based system but I've manage to setup a Archlinux distro with the help of a good tutorial) this is the interesting part, this is useful and bring more informations than just reading out documentations that often lack of results that you can use/see whenever the setup fail or you need something specific. 2) you should show (maybe on a separate video) how you "get" wine before running commands to configure it . Let's say that I've tried on my own, made mistakes and then find your video : your tutorial might not work because our programs are not in the same state/configuration (obviously, I need to learn stuff on my own.)

Being able to play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and program in Quickbasic were two of the only things that kept me from going over to Linux completely. Then I discovered Wine and Dosbox. Purists: let that sink in for a moment. On the subject of Wine Bottles: I have a folder in my home directory called "Wine and Dosbox" that has subfolders for each of my Windows and DOS programs--at least, the ones I just run directly under Wine without having to "install" them. Those programs and all their associated save files and other data go with me when I distro-hop. The ones I do have to "install" show up in a Wine entry in my menu anyway :D But those, unfortunately, do not carry over when I distro-hop, and must be reinstalled on the other end.

Chris, I have a piece of industrial-type software (from Seagull Scientific) that works with a special thermal, bar-code printer from Toshiba that I use for my business. Because I've only been using Linux Mint 19 since October, I simply haven't been able to figure out Wine. The software only works with Win7 (it was actually written in the Vista days) and will NOT work with Win10 (for that, I have to spend upwards of 400€ to "upgrade" to Windows 10). So this pretty much leaves me in a bind as I really would like to use this Tohshiba/Seagull hardware/software in Linux. I would have to install this from the cd-Rom and along with the software it will want to install special drivers for this industrial-type printer. Do you think this is at all doable under Wine? As a side note I was able to install Win7 as a VM using VirtualBox, and managed after great pain and searching to get it installed and working with the printer. But it is very slow and a little cumbersome. Normally I would just install my copy of Win7 to a separate SSD on my machine and multi-boot with my boot manager, but as we all know Win7 goes extinct starting January 2020 and I won't be able to keep it updated. I do NOT want to use Win10! Any thoughts?

Tried and found alternatives on linux but will give this a try because same software has or doesnt have same shortcuts on linux. Certain program i use uses alt+e to export data on windows but on linux it does not. Saw wine some time ago but read that certain programs run trouble free. Will give it a shot anyway. Wine has made amazing strides in the past few years especially thanks to Valve’s push for gaming on Linux among other things. Definitely worth giving it a shot. It works surprisingly well, and for apps that run well it’s way better to run them “natively” than via a VM.

I used to run Lotus Notes (ugh. an IBM-acquired monstrosity) on Linux via WINE. It actually ran much better on WINE/Linux than natively on Windows, and I didn't need the cleanup batch script to clean up all of the leftover processes after Notes would crash or hang.

The main reason for sticking with windows is for gaming. This looks promising to finally make the switch over to Linux to upgrade from windows 7 (have no desire to downgrade to windows 10). The closest I've got seems to trip up just as it's about to work, and Google is of no help with it. I have been watching your channel for sometime now and delivers good contents. However I do have questions. Window programs need dependencies which Wine steps.-in. 1) What I don't get is how do you findout what dependencies in Wine needed by specific program? Its not like a prompt window will just pop-up and say missing ".dll, directx9 etc." needed to be installed. Most of the time it will do nothing when you start a program. Most new in linux are baffled due to long list of options in Wine to be installed. Plus they will assume all the options showing in a winetricks prompt window are needed but just like you mentioned in you're video "don't start installing everything ...ends up in disaster". So I am curious how did you figure out what specific winetricks dependencies needed to be installed? (ie 7:35) Where Same as building a pc, each motherboard has a specific CPU socket (AMD or Intel) (1150, 1151 , LGA 775 etc). For any newbie will assume any CPU will work, until they realized "it won't fit". Unless he goes to the motherboard website and search for the mobo model and see what model CPU is supported then cross reference with his CPU if it is at the list. Only then it will fit and works.

The program running will throw an error out to you naming the dependency that it could not find a particular method in a particular dll.... in most cases at least. Then you could install that. Running that application again will result in another error for another dll. You could also try the vendors website to look for any dependencies mentioned.

@Chris Titus Tech I found that IF you can find the dependencies for each program you can add those dependencies via terminal. For photoshop for example this works: winetricks atmlib gdiplus msxml3 msxml6 vcrun2005 vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 ie6 fontsmooth-rgb gecko The problem is found the dependencies for each program hehe :)

I'm relatively new in Linux, less than a year but i already learned many things. My current system is exactly the way i want it to be and it's much better than windows. the only thing i'm still struggling is to get the last few windows programs to work on Linux. I finally got wine installed but what's now? I'm trying hard to figure how to digest what you just explained. it seems it'll take sometimes before I'll get there. I would like to install DxO optics pro 10 suite a Finnish book designer, Ifolor and Silvefast scanning software on Linux. anyway, the information you shared here is priceless! thank you!

Thanks. This is a complete different perspective than I had before. So you run a standard bottle against your programs and create a custom one when you need to fine-tune toward s the program you want to run? .. Is that well understood?

I highly recommend setting `sandbox` setting in `winetricks`. It removes "Z:" drive that shows the whole unix filesystem and removes links to Dekstop, Download, etc user directories that point toward your unix user directories. I don't want Windows programs messing with the rest of my documents. There is a difference between d3d9 and d3dx9. The "X" are libraries that contain a lot of supporting functionality, like (de)compliling shaders, loading of mesh primitives from files, geometry manipulations, etc. They are not directly involved with 3D rendering done by the hardware, they just prepare the data for it. You sometimes need bug-for-bug compatibility with them for some games, that's why they have separate library for every bug-fixed version. Installing DirectX9 would install a lot more libraries that are needed, including system ones. That's why it is recommended to install just what you need. Winetricks now should support installing 'Gallium Nine' that is fairly faster way to run D3D9 games, if your video card supports it. Gallium framework is part of the opensource Mesa3D drivers. Radeon, R600, Nouveau and Iris are the drivers that could work with it.

Almost forgot. I also recommend making a file '/root/.wine` to prevent running wine as accident as root. It would fail to create directory with that name if that file already exists.

My main holdover on Windows is MS Office. OpenOffice and LibreOffice are basically just as good (for my needs) - and they're free, and they don't force WinOS onto the system - but it turns out that complex formatting in any of the three office suites doesn't translate well into the other two. WINE is also very hit or miss on the heaviest 3D games I've tried running (Witcher 3, Rise of Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs, Crysis 3). Some titles are slower (because emulation) and others are faster (because less background bloat), sometimes WINE vs WinOS can actually give 4K/ultra/crazy quality at about 15% more fps.

Wow that’s crazy to hear that some games run faster even with translation. I really hope Valve keeps pushing hard to improve Wine game support and google’s new cloud gaming service gets more games to implant Vulkan so that I can completely ditch windows for gaming. Unfortunately some emulators are Windows only but I haven’t tried them in wine yet, maybe they work fine maybe not.

Some (few) games can perform better in WINE than native WinOS. But game engines which are heavy on DX11 or DX12 are too deeply embedded in Windows so emulating them tends to just hurt performance (and linux still can't really run all the DX12 components properly anyhow, lol). But Vulkan engines don't even need WINE so they can impressively outperform their Windows/DX12 counterparts in some configurations. Vulkan is slowly gaining traction with game devs but sadly it'll never be mainstream while Microsoft and Nvidia conspire to impose DirectX brand monopoly. "Crazy to hear that some games run faster even with translation" is really not a statement about this being faster than that ... it's more a testament to how much resource-hogging bloat Windows keeps churning around in the background. WINE has the advantage of full user configuration: you can exclude every component which doesn't make it run faster. WINE vs WinOS performance differences are probably more noticeable on systems with low hardware spec. A couple more fps won't matter if you've already got a mighty machine with overkill hardware ... but if your system spec is closer to a 3.5GHz 16GB sort of system then every extra bottleneck you can prune out will have a lot of helpful impact.

Nice video as I am currently using Windows 7 and I am building a new computer and am considering Linux for it, at least for a trial run to see how it goes. I tend to use free, open source software a lot already, stuff that is available for many platforms so converting may not be as difficult as I imagined. Software like Code::Blocks + a gnu compiler, Blender for 3D etc... all available for Linux as well. I don't game as much as I used to, but I recall about 10 years ago I got World of Warcraft running on Linux just fine, a game I played a lot at the time (less so these days but).

I run a ton of games that is not Linux-compatible. It's an adventure getting it to run and mod games and such. When available, multi-OS game-engines are the way to go! I would say MOST of my games are Windows only.

Check Protondb.com / lutris.net and you will see most "Windows Only" games now play on Linux. It's amazing how far they have come, I started using Linux in November of 2018 and it had (30% Windows games working on Proton)... Now in September 2019 (This number is 70%). I'm not just blowing smoke up peoples asses, there is a ton of compatibility and who know where we will be in another year. The main games that just don't work is EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) games. However, there has been a lot of progress on this front and we should see this solved this year.

Hey Chris, some questions regarding Wine. I mentioned this before but I use Origin to play Battlefield games and Battlefront 2. I use Lutris to try to get the best performance, however, using Lutris to install those games, it installs Origin for every game (which blows). Can I set up a wine bottle to run Origin and then install all my games inside that bottle to launch? I like Lutris, but I hate installing 4 separate instances of Origin. Maybe there is a better way to use Lutris with Origin but I haven't figured it out yet. I see you run Anthem, maybe you can share your insights regarding Origin. Sorry for the long post!

Hello Chris, I am an Autodesk Autocad user, I am determined to migrate completely to Linux, I have been using linux Mint since the beginning of this year and using Autocad 2018 with Windows installed on VirtualBox, but I lose a lot of performance, would I be able to have Autocad 2018 running on Linux Mint or other distribution with Wine? What is your opinion? Could you help me on this issue? A video on this issue would be very interesting as there are many people with this problem. best regards.

I have heard one of the reasons that nobody ever got the original Windows 95 Pinball Game to run in Wine, is that the original source code was lost. That is allegedly why it was not in future releases of Windows. That was a fun game and superior to any free pinball games. I recall seeing a video somewhere on KZbin about somebody making it work somehow.

Am I right in recalling you saying in one of your tutorials that you have Dreamweaver3 fully working on Wine? I have it running under Crossover but it does not display the CSS markup which means it's not that functional. Would be great to have some tips or a video on that please. The old Macromedia Dreamweaver3 still gets a lot of love compared to Adobe's later efforts on it.

Great video as usual! Is it true that having wine installed on a linux system carries the risk of getting infected by viruses from outside of the winebottles? Like from email attachments? The thought might be that linux now can use Win executables.

Not really, you would have to open that attachment and select run in Wine for this to happen. That is just fear mongering. You have to specify to run the application in Wine or it would have to default to open up in Wine.

Soooo...I just want to use my old Fujitsu Scansnap scanner with associated Scansnap Manager software. There is no Linux driver package available. Is Wine an answer for me?

I can barely believe my eyes that's awesome! Yeah your content's really good do you have a donation linlk? I think I spotted people doing that in your Debian install shenanigans. Lutris looks great...I want a few games for myt cousins to play, and they havet the attention span of a, well, teenager so don't wanna get too technical and waste so much time we don't get to game! Never play games myself...only want a few basic programs, Resolve with GPU rendering looking like the main challenge Oh, and the fact I still can't get any Distro working on this MSI GE63! Only Debian 9.8 is rock solid, but can't get wifi support, incl. the dongle I bought! Debian Buster works, but hangs on reboot, and I don't know what's going on behind that... so don't wanna risk turning it off and corrupting files etc. Still running Windowq for now (cheers for Tron vid too :) )

Thank you, Chris. I am bookmarking this one. I have been in a slow migration, and have a few Win## programs that are still kind of essential for me. As I make Ubuntu work more and more as my daily driver, I will likely need to do something like this for a few programs. For one, LO Impress does not work as well for me as M$Office Powerpoint. There area a few others... one of which I lost in the migration from WinXP to Win7. I'd like to get it back. This video may be very helpful for me, so I will be coming back to it! Thanks again.

Would love to see a guide on how to get Adobe Photoshop and Creative Cloud working on Linux. I would switch fully to Linux but for work and hobby stuff as a graphic designer I have found that Gimp just doesn't have all the features that I'm used to. Is there a distro of Linux that is optimized for WINE? I tried Linux Mint 19 and had no luck with getting windows programs installed because they couldn't connect to the Internet even though Linux had a connection.
