I was all about Storage Space until recently. I had 14 TB of drives wrapped up in Storage Space. Mirrored, Thin provision. It worked great for months, it was quick over the network, until we approached 7TB data usage. I needed to "add a drive," but was running out of USB plugs. So I went for an 8 bay add-on enclosure. I purchased 2 WD drives to plug in the bays, but for some reason it was only recognizing one at a time. Spent hours with the manufacturer's tech support team. Thought it was a problem with the bay, so I returned it and got a replacement one. Got external shells to take the 8 bay out of the equation. Somewhere along the line one of my 3TB external drives was compromised, it works (slowly) with a fan and a heavy weight on it? I can attach virtual disk and repair, but the farthest it has gotten was 9% over a weekend, then something happened and the virtual disk became detached (probably due to the failing disk). Long story short, I am looking to replace the failing drive, but now I have purchased 2 more 3TB drives and added them to the pool (which I am now calling a "black hole"). It is not working like the tutorial says. I have tried to add a disk using the "hot spare" option. It won't let me repair the virtual disk and it won't let me remove the failing physical disk. Thanks for the Tutorial, it was really easy to follow. If everything is as you say, maybe there's a glitch in my version of Windows Server?

Great videos, amazing job. So I'm using virtualbox to follow along, I added several HDDs to my server and they show on disk management I can even create volumes with them but when I try to create a storage pool only one of the disks is shown. I've tried different things to try to make it work with no luck. Maybe you now the right way to do this, Thank you so much

Whats the difference between windows storage server 2016 and windows server 2016? Is it the same and just added storage spaces to it ? Or are they different. ?

If i want to use one ssd to cache for one hdd i have to add both 2 disks to the pool and then simply create one virtual disk combining both ssd and hdd spaces? Any way to use only the hdd space for allocation and all ssd space just for cache? Without using the ssd as allocation too (just caching)? Im afraid ssd fail and i loose data, thats why i only need the hdd for storage.
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 4 жыл бұрын
That is not something that Windows Storage Spaces is designed for. There is some 3rd party software which may do what you want. Regardless of if you use HDD or SSD there is a risk of losing data so I would also backup your data. SSD will give you better performance if you can afford it.

I predict 7 years later, even in 2021, Storage Spaces will be lucky to write an honest 35 MB/sec in a 3-5 disk parity array...! :)

18:52 This seems like a bad behaviour. It should move the data to the remaining physical drives in the simple storage space when you tell it you're about to remove a physical drive. I assume this has changed since 2014 as I know storages spaces in Windows 10 has changed over that time too.

Windows Storages sucks, let me explain what test i had done: * I have two identical 1GiB SSD (SLC and able to write at 550MiB/s sustained from 0% to 100% fill, no speed loose after some GiB written),tested on Linux with dd and sync. * On Windows i can write a 40GiB file from a RAM drive to one SSD, it takes the same time, no matter if: 1.- I only copy it to just one SDD 2.- I copy it to both SSD at the same time So using both SSD at the same time has no penalty, no bottleneck, no speed loose on any of both because the other one is in use. Speeds i get are arround 480MiB/s onNFTS partitions directly over the SSD, so in raid0 it would be capable of more than 900MiB/s, CPU is not bottleneck, at top is 8% usage on the core with most used Now i decided to test Windows Storage Spaces (simple) with that two SSD and NTFS for filesystem. The i tried the same copy of that 40GiB file to that NTFS over Windows Storage Spaces (simple) and the speed i get is under 250MiB/s, less than a half od just one of the SSD, CPU usage on the top most used core is now 22% on that core, so CPU is not bottleneck. What is happening? Why speed on raid0 equivalent on Windows Storage Spaces is less than a half of one SSD speed, in other words less than a quarter of what could be spected? Any tip is wellcome. Please note: Windows 11 HOME as operating system (no virtual machine involved) with 64GiB RAM. ADD: I had also done another ilogical test, create a fixed sice VHD file of 90% size of the SSD, one on each SSD, then i create the Windows Storage Space (simple) using that two VHD and speed i get is now a bit lower than one SSD speed so it is near twice as if Windows Storage Space is directly on the two SSD. Really weird !!!

Technology like Windows Storage Space won't perform as well as RAID as they were designed to use a lot of different hardware together, where RAID needs the same hardware. Thus, if you want to be able to use a lot of different hardware together and changes things on the fly solutions like Windows Storage Spaces are a good choice. However, if you have specific needs in mind, RAID it most likely a better solution.
