Having been a windows user early in my life, then living in Linux for the past 12 years, I’ve primarily moved to Mac now. The biggest difference, having lived in all 3, Mac has the very least customizations. It’s the apple way or no way. Some elements of customization are sometimes introduced by 3rd party apps, but the core UI is very rigid. When I moved to Linux from Windows, then living in transition was easy because Linux is fully customizable. You can customize everything to however you like. So coming from windows, you can bring over elements you liked.

They hide settings, and to do anything administrator related is the equivalent of pulling teeth from a crocodile. The interface is sluggish, inefficient clicks. On windows most things are accessible from the start menu, click type and select. Apple forces you to click and click and click and click to get to something as simple as network settings.

Started working in IT in '84. Currently I own 3 Windows PCs, 3 Macs, 1 Linux Mint (on a Mac Mini), 2 Chromebook (of which one is Chrome OS on PC hardware), and several tablets with both iOS and Android. Each has it's pros and cons. Each is better at some things than other. Each has overlap where they do the same things as the others. As to the comment of Apple seeing Windows and copying it. The reverse is true. The Apple GUI (graphical user interface) came about before Windows. Likewise, Apples used mice before Microsoft, either in Windows or the pre-Windows era, in DOS. I won't begrudge anyone for their choice of operating system. Each to his own. However, many of the things Windows users find intuitive are seen as "backward" or counter-intuitive by Apple users. The home brewed CPUs in current Apple computers tend to be considerably more powerful than their counterparts on the Windows side. It's the driving force for Windows working overtime to introduce better functionality on the ARM platforms. Are Apple machines traditionally more expensive then Windows PCs? Yes. However, the entry level new Mac Minis are going for right at $600 and provide greater processing power than most comparable PCs.
@TalesOfWar21 күн бұрын
Remember MacPaint and Microsoft Paint before Windows 7 updated the UI? Practically identical lol. Also as it currently stands it's literally impossible to build a PC that beats or even matches the current entry level Mac mini for the same budget. Even if you use full size ATX PSU's and cases never mind the tiny barely bigger than a hockey puck form factor Apple are using. On top of that the power usage is MUCH higher on the PC side. I've seen videos of people who've tried to build something in the same budget and the PC ends up pulling 300-400W from the wall while the Mac mini is sipping 40-50W and still out performing it.

As a graphic designer, macs are what I have used for 30 years. I've also used windows machines. First off, the mini is a pretty good lil' machine, but not the best; depends on the loaded memory/ram etc. The mouse scrolling feature you can change in system settings; first thing I always do with a new mac. The keyboards are different and confusing for windows users and visa versa. There are keyboard shortcuts to screen record/capture etc. And there are many apps that do this too in the app store for online media capture. These days, you can actually get your login by texting your phone number (you don't have to have an iPhone, I have a Galaxy phone). To see the size of a file you 'right click' on your mouse and select 'get info'. Also to put in trash rather than dragging 'right click'. Depends on you mouse, and you may have to set up your mouse in the Sytem Settings. For a screen shot, you use keyboard shortcuts like 'command-shift-4 (on a mac keyboard)' then drag the area you want to capture. For details on your hard drive memory, you go to the apple on top left of sceen and select 'about this mac'. Also, the operating system you are using is the newest one... and even my colleages and I are finding a bit of a learning curve. I think over-all it's about what you are used to. I am a tech nerd, so I enjoy both the windows and the macs, but the mac is what I do my design work with always. :)

I feel like people go into MacOS expecting it to be different from Windows the same way that iOS is different from Android, when that is absolutely not the case. Trying to use a Mac the same way you'd use a Windows computer is like trying to make a vinyl collection replace Spotify. They're both valid and do the same thing at the end of the day, but they do it completely different ways, and they are *not* interchangeable. The only way to really learn to live with MacOS, as a Windows user, is to detatch from your Windows habits and expectations, and treat the Mac like it's its own separate thing. When I got my first Mac, it took me probably like 2 months of daily use to figure this out.

HDCP is a hdmi copy protection protocol.. it's used in like DVDs and Blurays and such. Surprising that the mac mini just outputs to your monitor using HDCP by default. That's incredibly stupid. The reversed scrolling is due to the main pointer/ navigation tool is a trackpad. Sharp corners are used to alert you to something, this is why stop signs have sharp angles, and triangles are the most common visual form of warning you about something. I am an apple hater, i don't like many things they do like their insane margins on upgrades or how locked down the iphone is but i think you didn't give the mac a fair shot and let your bias go too rampant to make a decent video. many of your complaints just can be boiled down to not knowing how to do something or it being different from windows. 1) the genie effect when minimizing an app - it can be changed to a different effect 2) if you updated your mac just by hovering the green full screen button you could get the kind of full screen you want more similar to the windows way but the mac way is to have multiple fullscreen apps in "spaces" that you switch between using mission control 3) around 13:30 you are stuck - you found out yourself that you can press esc but if you bring the cursor to the very top of the screen the menu bar would pop up again as well 4) seeing the size of a file - there is the similar to windows way of right click then "get info" which is the equivalent of "properties" or one of my favorite features on mac pressing space bar which will give you a preview of the file if the mac natively supports it like mp4 or png. If the format isnt supported you will get information instead like file size and date last modified 5) deleting stuff - just like windows you can right click and then "send to trash" or you drag and drop into trash 6) screen shots - the built in screenshot app is called screenshot and its very powerful for something built in. It has a key combo to auto activate and i think by default it is cmd + shift + 3/4 depending on what you want (i have since changed my hot keys). 7) avif picture of corvette - avif is a file format that is not widely supported on windows by default as well and the mac did give you the option to duplicate the picture of the corvette in a supported format that it can edit 8) file explorer - as you found out for yourself it is called finder things you are right about 1) how to tell how much storage you have - this used to be very simple by default and was made more annoying a few years ago in a major update. you can still find out but your point stands since its too out of the way 2) obs is trash on mac, i have had too many issues with it but i don't know if its an apple issue or an obs issue 3) it would be nice if we were told file transfer speeds things im indifferent about 1) scroll direction - its a muscle memory thing and i've learned over the years ppl get used to different things like inverted analog sticks in gaming. I'm also pretty sure this can be reversed in settings but apple being apple names the option in a stupid way. I think its called natural scrolling things im not sure about 1) apple id requirement - i haven't made a new apple id or recover an old apple id in over a decade so i can't say how easy it is. But you are right about apple not properly removing iphones off the account (see imessage issues of people that switched away from iphone). 1. The mouse scrolling is for natural scrolling. You scroll down to pull the page down - bringing the page up. You can change that in settings. 2. You can screen record using the actual built in screen recorder called QuickTIme. It also allows you to take screenshots. 3. You can delete files by pressing "Command Delete" together for the keyboard shortcut. 4. You can expand windows the way you were trying by turning the setting on in the Settings application. 5. You do have to create an Apple ID as everything you do with Apple will go through that. It makes things easier and more seamless. Seems like you just don't understand how to use a computer at all. 6. Screenshots are weird. You get a screenshot by holding "Command Shift 5". It seems to me that you came in with a bad mindset and intentionally used it the wrong way in order to get more rage from using it. MacOS is not Windows and expecting it to perform the same is outright ridiculous. MacOS is much easier to use than Windows and simply looks better. Apple also "Just Works" 99.99% of the time and it's rare I run into a single issue. You used a Windows mouse and Keyboard made for that operating system. You can't expect it to work the same way on a Mac. Mac's have a delete key, but it's used for the same purpose as a Windows backspace key. The delete function you were looking for can be achieved using the combo "Control D". Terrible video. Do better.

CMD + C/V makes more sense as control is used for the UNIX terminal. Windows kind of inherited the IBM keyboards that mostly ran UNIX before Windows and it was only with Windows 95 they got the Windows key as an extra modifier. This is also why you press CRTL + ALT + DEL to log on to an NT work group, they needed to use keys that weren't going to conflict with existing commands. Apple never had this issue because they designed their keyboards and OS from the ground up to work with each other rather than use someone else hardware and have to adapt to it. Command is also superior in terms of economics in my opinion. It's easier to smush it with your thumb and index finger than pinky and index finger lol.

The most frustrating thing I found trying out a Mac, is when you open a program. It doesn't open full screen with your taskbar icon thing open on the bottom. Instead, it opens small screen, and so when you open programs. You have a bunch of them in small screen. And if you go full screen, your icons on the bottom and top disappear. I'd be more open to trying out MacOS if you could change it to where when you open a program, it goes full screen with your icons on the top and bottom are present.

Aside from that, I've found that screencasting to various TV's is easier on Mac than on Windows and printer setup has been pretty flawless. I had the same gripe about the mouse scroll wheel until I found the Natural Scolling setting to reverse that. BTW, green dot to expand the window full size. For a longtime Windows user, there's very little incentive to move to Mac or Linux, let alone Chromebook. You "gain" nothing by doing so and have to learn awkward new concepts for no reason. If you are a beginner buying your first computer, then I guess you buy what you like and learn to use that. But if you like gaming, then Mac isn't really a good choice obviously.

Most Mac users are Mac users because they wanted to escape Windows. I can see an influx in the next year or so when support for Windows 10 ends and they really start pushing Windows 11 on people. I don't want it. A lot of people don't want it. So they'll be going with Linux, getting a Mac or sticking with 10 for as long as they can. Thankfully I only use Windows for gaming, anything else is on my Macs so I'm not really stuck like a lot of people will be.

@@TalesOfWar I doubt it. Getting used to Windows 11 (in good and bad) will be a hundred times easier for a Windows 10 user than adopting a completely different ecosystem. Linux has been "up-and-coming" for the past 30+ years, but never really gained mainstream traction on the desktop and I highly doubt ever will (with the exception of Chromebook, I guess). Mac has expensive hardware requirements and can be awkward to learn for a Windows user. And for what? Because somebody hates Windows 11 so much (why)? Nah.

@@joojoojeejee6058 It's more because of all the crap 11 has, and is bringing to it. It's just becoming an ever bigger bucket for Microsoft to mine your data then sell you to advertisers. That and a lot of the gripes most people have about Windows like it's inconsistencies and just generally being mediocre in most respects never seem to get fixed or improved. At least not to the point they stop being annoyances. Windows is death by a thousand paper cuts. It isn't just one thing here or there, it's lots of little things everywhere that all add up. I'm under no illusion to think Linux is going to take off suddenly, but it will see a large spike, just as Apple will see a large spike. In the grand scheme it'll mean litte, but in absolute numbers it'll be noticabe. A LOT of companies are also refusing to move to 11 until they absolutely have to because of privacy concerns. They've already delayed recall twice, and the current insider preview now has... encryption. Why the hell that wasn't there from day 1 I don't know, but I still don't think it'll be enough to make a lot of organisations trust it. They'll need a way to totally remove it. which they'll be happy to do, for a fee. They continuously remove things from the Pro SKU's too and add them to Enterprise, even with WIndows 10. They'll just do this until "Pro" is nothing but a name and is basically "Home with More Control", or "Home Premium" to use the old stupid Vista era assery lol.

I know you probably don't care but for others wondering, here are some pointers. About the HDCP issue, macOS is pretty strict about following the specs for HDMI but is not very dynamic about it. So if your devices report they support HDCP, it will turn on HDCP and leave it on, unlike Windows/Linux which will only enable HDCP when DRM-protected content is playing. To get around the issue, use an HDMI adapter/dongle or a monitor that does not support HDCP. Also, there's an app built into macOS called Screenshot that can do screen recordings... just like every other OS. Mouse thing is in settings called "natural scrolling" because of touchpads. It is annoying Apple didn't separate mouse and trackpad but you can change it in system settings. Keyboard wizard pops up with every new keyboard to determine what keyboard you have, but re-read the instructions because it wants you to press Z (to the right of L. Shift) and / (to the left of R Shift) for US ANSI... it even shows you a picture with an arrow pointing to where to look. iCloud thing was a skissue and Windows has a similar process with Microsoft account if you do a fresh install (some OEMs skip this for you). Your headaches with window management are all valid but part of that is because Microsoft patented the snapping feature you were trying to use... however Alt (option) + green button does what you were trying to do. You can also hold Alt (option) then click and hold the green button for more options. Storage and other system stuff are all in the System Settings app, just like on iOS and Android. Finder default behavior is definitely weird, but there's legacy reasons it behaves the way it does. Top menu Finder > Settings or Command+, to change how it behaves. BTW, Task Manager on macOS is called Activity Monitor and the system logs are in an app called Console. Terminal app is also extremely powerful, often more so than the UI, and since it is Unix-like, you can do almost everything from Terminal directly like on Linux.

This is exactly how macOS is to a long time Windows user. I started using macOS a years ago and also use both macOS and Windows daily. macOS really does suck at window and file management, especially compared to Windows 10/11. The things Tyler highlighted i.e. scrolling in reverse, can be adjusted in Settings. Delete key not working as a delete button you need an app for that. Cut and Paste, you also need an app like Path Finder for that. It’s a clunky OS compared to Windows. That’s the honest truth. Sequoia is better than Sonoma but stil, you need a lot of add-on apps to make it user friendly and often need to pay for features that are included in Windows 10/11 by default.

Hey man, I love your channel. I'm also not disagreeing with all your criticism, but as a Mac user Myself I think there are a couple things that you just simply did not know about the platform. That is understandable, and sometimes apple inadvertently makes things harder through their attempts to make them easier. As someone who uses Windows through my college, and now as a relatively experienced Mac user, I will say that more things are easier on macOS than Windows. I would urge you to take a couple days, play with the operating system, learn some of the stuff , and then maybe make a part two where you both record the whole thing, and understand a little more about how it all works. I think that would be an awesome watch for us, and now that the whole system is set up you should have less problems.

If you expect Mac OS to work like Windows, you're in for a bad time. Now, I don't like Apple, and in fact I hate them for many reasons (at least these days). Mac OS has its own way of doing things. It's not that they chose to NOT copy Windows; it's that they developed their own way of doing things, often before Windows did. You can't expect a company to develop a method for doing something, and then change the method just because their competitor decides to do it differently. Like how Macs often didn't have a forwards-delete key, so they use the backspace key as their "normal" delete key. It's command-delete (windows-backspace) to delete files on Mac OS. It has always been that way. It's not harder to do imo, but it is safer. That said, they have also changed a lot of things in recent years to make it more compatible with how windows users expect things to work, presumably to make it easier for them to transition. But they've also made (imo stupid) decisions that make it LESS like Windows, like changing how the green button works. It used to be a "maximize" button just like Windows had, but now you have to hold the option (alt) key to get the old behavior back. I could talk for hours about these kinds of things, but I'm already well into cringe essay territory with this comment. lol

You went from driving an old Honda manual to a brand new BMW and because you had to learn something new you don't like it. This is the most childish shit I have seen in years and perfectly suits the typical windows user. This was painful to watch. It takes about two weeks to get used to MacOS and you won't want to touch windows again...if you have any common sense.

As a professional “technologist” working with PCs since the days of PC/MS-DOS 3 and Windows Ver 1, and testing the usability of PCs, Blackberry phones, Macs, Linux, and advanced electronic systems, this video is hard to watch. How can this person NOT understand HDCP, which specification was widely known and used because of the release of the HDMI connector spec? He did no research on Apple’s reason for reversing the “mouse wheel” scrolling action. Did he start the Mac and properly adjust the settings for the keyboard and turn off the HDCP so he could do screen recording? Does he not realized that Macs have been around since the mid-80’s, and the philosophy of Mac operations are different? Why not just sit with the Mac and learn its quirks? That’s what some of us had to do, and guess what? I LEARNED IT!! I also built some new brain cells in the process. This person is not stupid, but he sure gave that impression in this video. Sit down with a different technology and LEARN IT! What did this person do when Windows 8 went to Version 10? Even Windows 11 is a leap from what Windows 10 was. It’s just different… LEARN IT!

Up vote x 100. My first computer was the family Apple IIe though I think only my brother and I ever used it. My second was a Mac plus. I’ve done tech support across Mac and windows OS for the better part of 4 decades. I’ve built PCs, and macinsteins, and done hackintoshes as well. It’s clear the guy isn’t stupid, but like so many people I’ve met who never even attempted to learn about how Mac OS works and the interface and control choices (both good and bad), he expects it to run exactly like windows does currently. What he probably doesn’t realize, is that the main reasons windows runs the way it does, is because it has to differentiate itself from Mac OS or risk patent infringement. I’ve got a really good friend who was very anti Apple until I showed him OS X and the command line interface. Once he understood what was under the hood, he started switching his entire home environment over to Macs. Take the time to learn before you make a hate video.

the funny thing is that Windows 11 is now mimicking Apple (again) but both companies mimic each other

@@ta0soft How so? Could you tell me some points which are stolen from apple? They moved the task bar from the edges to the middle? Holy yea now that you mention it 100% stolen. Honestly i think apple should put a patent on the location of the task bar (you can literally change it back to the windows 10 one in the settings) , what comes next? closing a window? No way...

Came out later and still has 5X the number in users, that should tell you something (the initial release dates were only 10 months apart btw) Microsoft Windows has 73%, followed by Apple's macOS at 15%

@@FireGodSpeedI mean the core operating system was taken from Apple. On a technically note it was taken from NextStep which was made by Steve Jobs after he left Apple but then Apple bought NextStep to save themselves because Apple had no software meanwhile NextStep was dying because the hardware was to expensive but the software was revolutionary.

@@FireGodSpeed the Start menu is only one aspect, they designed it to look/feel more like Finder, just like Apple redesigned Finder to look more like Explorer

Get a video rendering in 4k. That’ll seal the deal. Even m1 processors are way better than anything intel has produced.

Here is how to screen recorded on the Mac I can guide you through the steps to screen record on a Mac, but Siri itself doesn't have the capability to start a screen recording. You can use the built-in screen recording feature in macOS. Here's how you can do it: Press Shift + Command + 5 on your keyboard to open the screen recording toolbar. You'll see options to capture the entire screen, a selected portion, or to record the screen. Choose the option that suits your needs (record entire screen or selected portion). Click on “Options” to set various preferences like saving location and recording audio. Click the Record button to start recording. To stop recording, click the stop button in the menu bar or press Command + Control + Esc. This feature makes it easy to capture and share your screen activities on a Mac.

I truly appreciate Tyler taking the time and spending the money to at least give Apple a try while being a die hard Windows / Android user. That's 110% more than a lot of people would do! That being said... I feel that him being such a die hard user of Windows / Android didn't allow him to make his mind as open as he claimed it was lol
