The ps3 has XDR ram which is x12 as fast as usual ram. The 9-core processor is also very high-tech and very complex- meaning anyone other than its creaters (Sony, Toshiba, and IBM) will not know how to take advantage of all the power.

Yeah instead of having seperate processing units for shaders and geometry, they are now both done on the same thing, making each less effective since they are no longer as specialized. 24SPUs does not = 24 vertex + 24 shader pipelines. But it allows for more complex shader programing, or more complex graphical effects in the API with the cross programming. So ps3 / 360 both support all the same effects, but the 360 supports a little more such as paralax occlusion mapping/ sub surface scattering

Saludos HeavenBattosai, lo primero, informarte que el cell que lleva una ps3 esta capado a 7 nucleos, segundo cada nucleo corre a 3.2GHz, que no significa que se sumen, con lo cual es un procesador descompensado, la Memoria Ram que tiene es penosa, partida en dos nucleos de 256, asi que luego al final en funciones de pc sirve de poco, es mas, una consola nos la compramos para jugar no? Otra cosa que me repatea es que la mayoria de juegos multiplataforma me los pillo para 360 por las resoluciones

And even on fast computers. My grandmother got a Vista laptop with an AMD Turion Dual Core 64 bit and 3 GB of RAM, and it boots XP from a portable USB hard drive nearly 3x the speed it boots its own OS. I have found that if you switch skins in Vista to Windows Classic, it does help a good amount. From there you could probably find a theme online that's a little easier on the hardware...like AlienGUIse. But that's only if you're that worried about the look of your desktop.

x86 is the Intel chip architecture. Win is Intel based. Linux is multi architecture - runs on Intel, Power, Cell chips. It's fast, secure & safe. PS3 has the "install another OS" option. Make sure you have enough room on your HDD first. You can upgrade yr HDD using standard 2.5" SATA drives. Get a B-Tooth keyboard with built in mouse (Logitech Mediaboard pro) and you're done - it has the PS controller buttons. PS3 - very sophistacated versatile kit - you can also use it to play games. (LOL)

The ps3 is built to do this. Go to settings and you will find something about an OS. One of the OS is PS3 and the other is Linux if you install it.

You can do this many different ways with linux, you can use parallels, VMWare, or have a image and just run the image of windows xp... linux is not that hard to use like most people think, its pritty simple, and the ps3 is not emulating linux its actually running linux, its just linux is emulating windows, which usually is not all that slow if you know how to do it right

@milespower169 PS3 is a 64-bit Cell processor, which is based off the IBM PowerPC. If the PS3 maybe had 1 GB of ram, windows XP would definitely run faster, comparable to a computer running XP in an emulator. I run XP on my PC using virtualbox on a linux system, just like the PS3, but my laptop has 2 GB of ram. PS3 doesn't have that much ram available, thus, why it's slow. Best thing to do on PS3 is run linux and only linux. No point in trying to run windows or any other OS for that matter.

@ rohen04 Some time ago VMware added experimental Direct3D acceleration on Windows XP VMs running on Linux. But since you're running on the same architecture, Wine is a better choice. btw, the video doesn't show a VM, it shows an emulator. Remember you can't virtualize on different architectures.

@Mgjaggers True, but unless you are running Mac or 64bit windows, you are not going to see anything more than 3.75Gb of ram since the OS is not designed to recognize and more than that. Not to mention the program you are running needs to be coded for 64bit or Mac to utilize more thand 3.75Gb of ram as well. I'm not arguing, just stating something most people neglect to say.

well you can if you use the ps3 as it is with a keyboard and mouse it makes a great computer but if your going to install linux its really really slow because the ps3 runs it on its own emutator mode and a lot of the hard ware is crippled ,so your never going to get the speed to run anything more than word processing apps or browsers

@crazykidcapa first of all, its 2.56 GFLOPS, second, its not called graphic card, its graphic chip and it was outdated since it came out (2006), the ps3 graphic chip its just a nvidia geforce 7800 GTX modificated, 7 series from 2006, then the 8 series from 2007, then 9 series from 2008, geforce 200 series from 2009 and finally geforce 400 series from 2010. Lastest computers can overpwn the ps3.

No. They dont. The most common screen resolution higher than 1920x1080 is 2560x1600 and even so no company provides them with their PCs as they're extremely expensive. Only a few people (in comparison to all PC users) have high res screens. I'd be willing to bet that the average resolution is about 1280x1024 for 4:3 displays and 133x768 for widescreen monitors.

Yep, the original iMac G3 powerbook G3, G4, and the last of the macs had G5 only the desktops the laptops didnt get G5 because the G4 laptops were already better than the G5 Laptops... i love my iMac G4, i actually partioned the hardrive and am running Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger and Linux Kubuntu!

Some people, though, really could care less what an OS looks like. I agree with go90go. And besides, don't you think all those cute little textures and effects effects hog your resources? A friend of mine bought a laptop and the first thing she did was strip Vista and drop Linux on it. The difference in performance was staggering. It doesn't matter how good your hardware is...the less extra shit an OS has, the better it will perform in my experience.

The size of the program says nothing about the processing power or memory needed to run it. Plus, the PS2 emulators you are talking about need advanced graphic acceleration, which you can't even get with most VM setups, and this isn't virtualization - it's pure emulation.

AMD Opteron 2210, running at 1.8 GHz and 13824 of them. IBM PowerXCell 8i, and 116,640 of them. ppe and spe inculded in that. each ppe has 8 spe. and these spe are the full sized version of them spe not the gimbed version the ps3 has. so no a ps3 will never beat lets see how many you will need in pratical:

It seams running an emulator on a linux OS installed on a PS3 is fairly pointless. Despite the consoles power, the restrictions placed on running linux (one core, limited access to the gpu, limited memory, ect), it just doesn't have the power to run it, unlike a PC, which generally is more powerful than a PS3, as PC have been running games in HD for years before the PS3 came out. While an interesting exercise, there is no advantage in running XP or any other OS in linux.

Above all this, if you have an 'Editor' or 'Partner account, you can exceed 10mins of video from the beginning. Partner accounts are able to upload videos of unlimited runtime... I know of one vid on here that lasts 1:32:49 (as in hh:mm:ss).

Which blows? The 360, or original? 360 is not out of date, it has a unified shader architecture, which is actually newer than what the PS3 has. The original Xbox, yes it is old, however you are more likely to be able to run x86 software on it, and for the cost, less than 20$, is not so bad to mess around with.

I would expect that XP would bog the PS down, not to a Crawl, but the PS software in it's own right would be sufficient for any Console gamers needs. The only reason one would want XP on there PS3 is to do what they can to hack all the software.

I am not saying it wont work... I am saying, unless someone is willing to write and create their own drivers and software to manage all 8 cores of a PS3 to process a game, it isnt worth it. The PS3 is made from custom processors and GPUs. Drivers are only made for it's operating system and can not be 'understood' correctly by XP, Mac, or Linux to their full capacity. I am saying that we can use them, but never to the full extent and capability for the OS it was coded for originally.

No. Not only can you get 2560x1600 monitors (essentially 1600p) but you can also use multiple monitor technologies (such as ATis Eyefinity) to render the game across multiple screens in a very high resolution, such as 7680 x 3200.
