Thanks Dan. It's sure worth a look, even from this long time iOS user. I'll be pre-ordering a 950 tomorrow at my local Microsoft Store and will probably get a dual SIM for my travels, simply because it will ease the use of foreign SIMs. I'll probably hang onto my iPhone 5S and swap periodically. I didn't upgrade to the 6S simply because it wasn't much of an 'upgrade.' Moving from the closed system of Apple to the open system of Microsoft will be fun. Continuum could be useful, if I can connect with say a motel room TV for Word and Excel use. That would allow me to leave my laptop home for short trips. For example, I'll be traveling over the Christmas holidays and staying in motels. The ability to review client documents using Adobe Reader, Word, and Excel on a TV screen would be really helpful. Besides, I sure can't buy an iPhone 6S Plus for $550.00!

I'll be keeping my iPhone 5S and making the change gradually. I may even carry both phones when I travel just to have my boarding pass on my watch. Once Garmin does a Garmin Connect app for WP, that issue will go away. United and Delta both have boarding passes in their WP apps. Beyond that I use FB, Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, navigation, and FlightAware are all there. Sorry for the long response but my experience may help others. Thank you again for your kindness.

+Ben Sunny Isaac You're wrong. Regular people use their bank apps, school apps, etc. How are you going to ignore WinCentral's own reviewer saying he wants a UFC app. Are you the App Nazi? Who made you in charge of what other people want in apps? Simple fact is, if most people switched over to this phone, they would probably be disappointed. You have no right to disagree with them on their own personal wants and needs. Stop being creepy. Personally, I like it, Continuum seems interested, and since I want a Surface or Spectra X2 (but still waiting on Asus to show somethingin new, though that may not be till early next year), this may be a good fit for me (since I'm also interested in developing universal apps). That doesn't mean it's right for you or anyone else.

How exactly is iris scanner not better then fingerprint scanner? it will be interesting to see how long it takes someone to fool an iris scanner because if I remember correctly some hackers in Germany were able to fool finger print scanner on iPhone in 48 hours.
@WindowsCentral9 жыл бұрын
+Aman Bhullar Slower. Not as consistent. You need to look at the phone as opposed to unlocking it as you're pulling it out of your pocket. Better question is what makes it _better_? Fingerprint scanners are not really hackable for the second generation ones and let's be honest, if someone is going to all that trouble to hack your phone, you likely have bigger problems.
@benjmiester9 жыл бұрын

Unfortunately and quite saddening to say for me (L925 user) I'm looking at Android now, was kind of hoping that these flagships would bring something inspiring and innovative but clearly Microsoft isn't giving his best on the mobile division. As a long-time Android user whose curiosity was raised when this phone was first announced I appreciate this detailed & objective review. The app gap does still concern me, but I'm sold on a lot of the features & expandability for the price. I agree that Microsoft's overall vision is unique and intriguing, but I do hesitate to jump onboard due to the app situation. Then again I recognize it's a catch 22, without a sufficient user base then app developers will likely continue to stay away. I'm still going to check out one in the store soon, but I'm still very much on the fence.

Great thorough review. I desperately don't want to see Windows Phone die, on the contrary, I want it to thrive, but that app gap I think has reached the breaking point for many. The way mobile bank apps work, for example, has made having WP as your main driver a bit of an inconvenience.
@roman20119 жыл бұрын
It's a contradiction but i don't mind the app gap because it means spending less time looking at the phone. I just need fast camera, music, and calls and text. I have an ipad and i spend way too much time on it already. Apple is too good for our own good! Besides, serious work should be done on a real computer at the office and people nowadays should pay more attention to others instead of their phone, it's ridiculous.

I used to own Lumia 920 for almost 2 years and loved it, then switched to iPhone 6s now and couldn't be happier. Cameras/processors/PPIs are cool but what really matters is hardware-to-software optimization. On Microsoft devices it's just not smooth at all, all experience lacks some sort of "consistency". It's hard to doubt Microsoft made some significant improvements in mobile department for last couple years and I just wish global apps like FB or KZbin would operate as smoothly and would have same features as ones for Android/iOS.

Fantastic full review. I like Windows Phone. Apps were never a problem for me, the essentials are there and anything else can wait until I get on my home tablet/desktop/laptop. It's a very "buisness" oriented phone rather than keeping up with "social" trends. I can survive without Snapchat or Instagram (even though there is a Instagram Beta app, by Instagram themselves even on Windows 8.1). I'm not yet compelled to upgrade my Nokia Lumia 920. I'm waiting for a Lumia that has all this...but less bezel and more brand awareness. For example, the Nokia Lumia 920 has a very noticeable windows logo on the front and a sleek flat backpanel. The Lumia 950 integrates the Windows button on the screen itself, the top is a bit larger (length wise), and the camera causes the backpanel not to be flat. Fix those slight design flaws and I'll upgrade. I been to Microsoft Technology Centers, they have amazing technology behind closed doors that can easily make this happen and others that can help the Lumia stand out...wish they did so! Nevertheless, always enjoy the new Windows Phone-- I get ecstatic when I see people with them.

I tried switching to Android but Windows is so much better and stable. I did however updated the OS to Win10 and it was a disappointment with songs. All the videos and songs in my memory card were skipped and none played. Weird thing is only Nymphatamine - Cradle of Filth and Iron Maiden's - Hallowed by thy Name played well. :D I hope you do read and reply to the comments here although it is coming almost 11 months after the review. If that wasn't fixed soon, I don't think Microsoft will have a chance in the mobile world. I love their evolving vision a lot, and I support Microsoft. But they are just not there yet.

You always have good reviews. I really wish Windows Phone would have made it.

Great review - tough but fair. Fans like us will want this phone, and want others to want it too, but it's hard to see how someone who is happy on iOS or Android would make the jump at the moment.

Perfect review, just on point, awesome job Dan.

Not only is there a limitation of apps on the apps store , there is also a limitation of the quality of apps when compared to ios and android. Many of the apps are out of date and are missing key features . So its both quantity and quality that are the issue.

i am a lumia 920 user, bought it back then when it was launch in Malaysia. i was hoping the windows phone ecosystem to improve overtime, but after years of using windowsphone, and the current cheap but powerful android phone like mi4c is already in the market... well i am not sure if my next phone is gonna be windowsphone again..

Give us that universal Windows Central app! Look nice :) Great review btw. Hopefully heading to a UK launch event to pick up a 950 XL in a couple of weeks.

What will make me buy this is about how great it will age. The 950 or 950XL will definitely last for at least a year or two and will still be great by that time. Unlike iPhones and Android smartphones, they always get new ones especially the latter since a lot of OEMs keep coming to produce high end models.

wow nice video. can't wait to have a feel of this device. waiting for it to reach Ghana soon. I have windows 10 on my 535 and its awesome. thought of buying 1520 but I think I simply have to push a little for the 950

My daily driver now is a Lumia 1520. I love how fast and smooth it is even till today, which perfectly demonstrates how hardwares today are already mature and powerful enough that your phones should not become slow no matter after how many updates. I also love how easy it is to organise apps with folders and live tiles, and mostly, the "pin stuff“ function. However, while I don't care very much about the app gap since almost all the apps I need and use windows phone has them, I am absolutely frustrated at how the app developers are reluctant on updating their windows apps, for example, Spotify, Facebook. What a shame.

Great review!!!Unbiased and straight forward, not like a payed, superficial, hipster reviews like some other sites have(looking at you Verge, they are like the offense to the tech journalism )...like you said it, hard sell for a non wp user, but to a wp user like me, it's almost a dream device.

excellent Review. No bias,just putting everything as it is. This Phone seems good,but there's really tough competition and I don't think Microsoft Delivered enough for me.

So, if I'm currently on a Lumia Icon, should I want to switch? The Icon's design is jaw dropping, even today, and the camera still feels fantastic. I'm troubled by the 950 being plastic, a flag ship device should look and feel like it. The best example of a carrier shouldn't feel like a Walmart Android phone. I don't want to move away from the Windows Environment, but the 950 doesn't feel like a step up from what I have, other than the obvious performance upgrades. As far as phone features, it just doesn't seem special.

+Dan Brown Picking up a leather/metal band Mozo case will likely go a long way to making it feel more premium. If you love Windows Phone and are sticking with it, the 950 (or XL) is your best bet and worth picking up.

I have Lumia. A 630 and I'm pretty happy with it. The only problem is that for my school, games and other stuff, there aren't enough apps. That is the only problem. Otherwise I just love it
