I live in Florida USA and I found a small colony of sphagnum growing on my property, I separated a few heads from the colony that was growing wild and now I have trays of it and the wild sphagnum replicated and is bigger than when I first took a few heads from it , I will have to do some research to see exactly what species I have though . I also had sphagnum grow from dried moss from the garden store , I use it for substrate for my nepenthes. I have been told it’s very hard if not impossible but after 6-7 months of constant hydration I have a colony of that stuff too.

Actually it will depends of the sphagnum you get. High quality LFS from New Zealand is sterilized so nothing re-grow. But if I let my sphagnum dru totally for 6 months, it will be so dead i can powder it. But water it again an some seeds (?) will regrow. This thing is immortal haha

Ohh that is so cool sir remy. At 2:36, the diff sphagnum, i thought they were just the sane. I know it is a long shot sincs i heard sphagnum can only be really identified microscopically. But i have similar and all along i thought they were same. That the more spikey was just the more mature version of the first one you showed. Really cool. I hope one day i get to send samples abroad so i can ask them to identify mine

You should consider fertilizing the sphagnum with dilute Maxsea, if you're not already doing it. It really helps with the growth.

I don't do it for the sphagnum but when I spray (once week) with diluted fertilizer, I spray everything (sphagnum, seedlings, adult plants etc.). So yes, I believe that helps the live sphagnum to grow better. Also I use rainwater so there is also nutriments in it. ;)

Hey Remy! So i have not seen any cheap live sphagnum in my country, do you think weeping moss and jungle moss is Ok for nepenthes?
@WindowsillNepenthes
@WindowsillNepenthes 2 жыл бұрын
That I don't know that. But if you want to try, let the moss submerged under water for 24h so bugs and pest dies or escape.

Scoop it out and possibly spray hydrogen peroxide. But if it comes back and the seedlings are 1 cm, consider repotting in fresh substrate ;) but careful with the roots.
