The scandals of today are rooted in the secrets of yesterday In leaving aside 2019 spare a thought for 1999, the year Sister Souljah published her "The Coldest Winter". Channel 4 hosted "A Blagger's Guide To Black History." It was also the year the BBC aired the documentary, "Playing The Race Card" detailing policy that was to impact upon us. It revealed that in The 1950s a Secret Civil Service Committee was established and that it "made the case for controls." Its complete title "Working party to report on the growing social and economic problems ariising from the influx into the United Kingdom of Coloured Workers from other commonwealth countries" (August 3 1955) In Unwanted: The Secret Windrush Files (2019), David Olusoga exposed the makings of the "hostile environment." In May 1947 The kingston Governor sent a telegram to the colonial office in Whitehall warning of the arrival. The Secretary of State was urged to do "everything possible to prevent the occurence." Even Pm Attlee referred to it as an incursion even suggesting they be diverted to east Africa to pick "ground-nuts." (By contrast an April 1947 document revealed how EVWs were warmly welcomed in the thousands.) Immediately upon arrival Mps wrote the PM weary this influx would "impair the harmony, strength and cohesion" and sought to "control immigration" In January 7 1955, The Spectator reported on "The Jamaican Flood." Ten days later British pathe aired "Our Jamaican Problem." This came within the context of the 1948s British National Act, and 1951 when Churchill lead the Conservatives back before raising immigration questions to his cabinet in 1952. They set up this working party and further claimed these immigrants were coming to steal dole money (State Assistance.) In June 1953 officials were informed to conduct a Secret race survey to gather statistics to evaluate this claim. It was only two weeks after Queen Elizabeth, Head of the Commonwealth had come to the throne. In 1956 health minister Enoch Powell visited Barbados to invite workers to the NHS but "the hospitality was soon replaced by hostility." In 1952 the McWarren-Walter Act restricted access to the Farm Work Programme in the USA. In 1954 Constantine Leary highlighted exclusion in "The Colour Bar." In 1957 immigrants continued to be met by the White Defence league culminating in the 1958 Notting Hill clashes. 1962 Commonwealth Immigrants Act of Harold Mcmillan looked to control immigration on the basis of employment prospects. Rab Butler opined "the great merit of this scheme is that it can be presented as making no distinction on grounds of race or colour although in practice" this discretion would be applied. He continued "We must recognise that although the scheme purports to relatively solely to employment and be non-discriminatory, it's aim is entirely social and it's restrictive effect, is intended to, and would in fact, operate on coloured people almost exclusively." In 1962 Jamaica and Trinidad were granted independence, as was Barbados in 1966. In 1965 Race Relations Act was passed (amended in 2000, the year Damiola Taylor was stabbed.) In 1967 CARD petitioned to have the Minstrel Show (1958-78) pulled from air. In the 70s it was just one of the shows provoking race alongside Mind Your Mouth and Love Thy Neighbour. In 1968 the emergency commonwealth immigrants act was passed to curb British passport holding Kenyans. It was amended when the 1971 Immigration Act "marked the end of black immigration for settlement" demanding people be burdened to prove that they are British: "but in the meantime, life went on." In 2014 Lunar House formalised the hostile environment. "...yet here we are fighting to breathe, just to prove that we have the right to breathe." "...after 51 years they're going to grant me something you were legally entitled to."

Their contribution to British society is debatable. Whether they like it or not they were never invited here . Came here because the Jamaicans didn’t want them they had no work for them. We didn’t want them but they were allowed to come in. The trouble is history gets twisted as time goes on. And from the minute they stepped foot off their boat all they’ve ever seem to do is Play the victim people are sick to death of it. They need to realise people have got their own worries without pitying them all the time.

The people in the comments talking about Britain is a white nation clearly missed the reconstruction of the first Britain. As dark as night. Therefore colour doesn't determine who's British. Those people from the Windrush generation helped rebuild Britain. A nation bombed after a catastrophic war with Germany would have turned into a failed state. What's the difference between the Congo and Britain? One got international help both financially and in terms of man power, and the other got no help. Now one is thriving as one of the main powers and the other is in a state of constant war. But hey it's the way of the British Empire. Use then spit out people, first slavery then colonialism and now this.

Abdi Ahmed What do you mean? Britain is a white nation, native Brits are white, they are a white country, the Brits rebuild the nation after WW2 the windrush generation just was a little help. Britain is a nation built by Brits and for Brits, that's their only home on Earth, What's wrong with trying to keep Britain white? Britain is not a multicultural nation like the USA, and it should stay like that.

CRIS WTF 34 Britain may have been white for a few thousand years but the first person on this land was black. Therefore saying it's a white nation and non whites should go home makes no sense. If the Windrush generation and others didn't come to Britain, it wouldn't be what it is today. They were a lot more than a little help.
@SuperMuneera

Genghis Khan Firstly the Cheddar man was black, dark skin is black. His skin wasn't tanned but dark. You can go to East Africa and find people with straight hair. Even Australian Aborigines have straight hair. And his straight hair was probably an adaptation of living in Europe for thousands of years. The lack of vitamin D eventually turned people like Cheddar man white. As for the Arab slave trade, I'm well aware. It was around long before the Trans Atlantic slave trade. However the latter was a million times worse. People were stripped of their names, religions, culture and it still affects people today. There was no man power available from people who went to Australia and America because they bottled it. They want seeking new lives and the likes of the Windrush generation did the work. How many British women went to America with American soldiers? And foreign aid is the biggest con. Western nations steal trillions annually in raw materials and food, then give a few million as aide to government officials who won't share it. Then gullible people like you think you're tax is being given to people too lazy to work.

But if I was black, I would rather fight and die than be slaved for 400 years. Because wars and invasions has been happening everywhere. Its all about who is strongest.

My sister had been in this country since 1960, she had worked all her life from the age of 15 (including a long period for the NHS) and gave many years of her life helping disadvantage children...but this country treated her this way, telling her she wasn’t welcome here. @@MrRollinsb I'm sorry but the UK is the most tolerant nation in the world and does not have the racial issues ingrained in US society. So your comment re US is more than a little ironic. This is more about over officious civil servants coupled with immigrants from the West Indies not ensuring their documentation was up to date and in good order. It is ridiculous that someone who has lived in the UK for 50 plus years would still be travelling on a non UK passport. There was greater number of immigrants coming in from the Indian sub continent and to my knowledge there have been no such issues in their communities. People have a responsibility to help themselves even if they need to jump through a few hoops to do so. The Windrush generation may well have come over to help with essential services but they were also coming for a better way of life for themselves and their families. I got the "hospitality" treatment at immigration in Heathrow when I got sent to my employer's London office for temporary duty. Immigration lady grilled me for half an hour insinuating that my visa was fake and my passport was dubious. I told her if she couldn't understand why I was sent, she can ask my employer. Got detained some more in a room with people of color waiting to be deported. Finally got allowed into the country after an hour. Think I got to the hotel at 1am.

I met 5 different, people who told me that they been deported just before the reached 65 and due to get their pension after having worked in England for 40/50 and paid taxes. So I started making phone calls and asking questions. Why was this happening. This was government policy not a mistake. The British government was deporting British citizens and claiming they were illegal immigrants.

My sister used to live next to a guy called Dexter Bristol. I remember his lights would always be out and he never came out his flat. Sometimes we would hear him move inside, so we knew someone was in there but he was as quiet as a mouse..darked out windows, electricity off, like he was hiding . At all times during the night strange men would come and knock at his door 1am, 2am, 5am, sometimes they would knock at my sisters asking questions.... this went on for years. We later found out Dexter was a windrush citizen, hounded by immigration, terrified to leave his home, so stayed inside as a recluse, rarely leaving, with no access to healthcare, threatened by the government ... Dexter died of a heart attack two years ago outside the flats.... the government killed him. Rest in peace Dexter... I’m so sorry we didn’t know your story, wish you would of knocked on the door. The British government did offer citizenship in the early 80’s. My grandfather that went to the U.K. in the 60’s couldn’t read or write received his citizenship. This is what the family was afraid off. The church played a big part in the congregation getting citizenship. I feel that a whole lot of people are putting the blame on the government when it was them that were too laid back. Then again the home office was in the town we lived in also. There Is blame on both sides. Listening to these stories are heart breaking.

It was only after being diagnosed with terminal cancer that he started getting harassed by the Home Office with threats of sending him back because according to them he had no legal status here; even though he and his family had, had many holidays in America and returned to the UK without a problem. So at end of life he was treated like some illegal alien. These are not immigrants, they are citizens. The actions of the UK government in regards to the Windrush situation is no less than persecution of vulnerable people. It is clear that what is occurring is blatant and aggressive HARASSMENT. But no lawyer seeks to file a collective injunction against the administration The presumption of law is that an individual is innocent until proven guilty and yet, people are being detained for committing no crime, deported, threatened PERSECUTED, after legally establishing residency going back 40, 50 years. Even a newly arrived resident has rights. The government cannot seek to suddenly attack a particular group of citizens with no justification unless we now exist in a fascist state. Is the British government a FASCIST government? No one is above the law and that includes government officials and policy makers. The governments actions in these cases is both immoral and in many cases, illegal. Still the legal community takes no action. One would expect to see cases being brought, injunctions being applied, personal suits for injury, filed, but no, just the constant cries and heart rending screams of a group of citizens, fearful and suffering from the attack of a brutal regime administering policies born of pure hatred. Any objective observer, looking at the actions of the government and its administrators can clearly see that this has all been contrived and carried out by intent, with malice aforethought by those that have sworn to uphold the rights of citizens and provide them with protection. It is almost too disgusting, too offensive, to be believed. It is no wonder that young people have taken to walking around carrying big knives to protect themselves, given the actions of those who are sworn to protect them. Mental cruelty, physical detainment, spiritual oppression, unfair treatment and psychological abuse - disguised as government policy The government is in effect turning these people into refugees and then stranding (as in leaving them stranded), in a place that is all but alien to them, with no means of support., at 60, 70 years old. One might be forgiven for assuming that whoever is running this show, is not of human origin...

The people of the European Union are not immigrants, Europe is one Land Mass, one European people, with different languages. Many of the European people coming into the UK was never seen as Immigrants. Thats why the British Government wanted to get rid of the Black people and their children, and replace them with white ones. But what happend the Europeans coming to the UK worked made enough money and many of them went back to their own country because they prefer their own way of life. So this is why they want to use the people of the Caribbean, to replace the Nurses, to use them like they used the ones of the past. 1st use them to help after WW2, use them to fight their wars trying to take over peoples countries, to recreate Conoliasim, they re named as the NWO they have been fighting for for centuries. Black people was warned after the Scarman report of the 1980's of Instititutional Racism, the WARNING was there all along. The Government has been complaining about Immigration for a long time, but while using immigration to win Election, using people of colour as their Political foot ball, The Labour Party do it, the Concertivatives do it, the Lib Dems do it, they all do it. They have used your lives to garantee their Political Pay check.

+maria610421 No. My mother, a Pole in the UK since the early 1990s is an immigrant. Europe is NOT one people, not one person. It is a diverse continent. Diversity does not just mean skin colour. As for this Windrush issue, who to blame? I would blame institutional racism primarily. Brits colonised the world and then treat the colonised as second class citizens. To take the anger out on EU migrants, as some have, is counterproductive in the extreme. Has my mother been treayed differently because she is not British? Absolutely.

Governments who allow racism should be sued in a "class action", held accountable and made to pay punitive damages to every single person who has been damaged by this heinous conduct and warped mind set.

sam wright and quite rightly so, it should be made a big deal of, the way these people have been treated is nothing short of despicable. And I hope this country and government continue to be humiliated until they resolve it!!

the goverment is taking action to make thing's right, there was no intension to pick on the windrush generation, the media and other goup's who want to expolt the stiuation, by creating the narrative that the windrush generation was some how targeted, is misleading and wrong, the windrusd was caught in the cross fire of an ilegal immigration crack down, where people was ask to prove there status the windrush children did not apply or have the nessarray document
@janiner792

The government are only taking action BECAUSE they have been humiliated BECAUSE people have made a big deal BECAUSE its a travesty. And I do believe that the windrush generation were deliberately targeted because they are perceived to be an easy group to disempower. These people were British citizens when they arrived because the countries they came from were part of the commonwealth so the way they are being treated is disgusting, inhumane and completely ungrateful on the part of the British government. Shame on the British government!! This situation needs a swift end, justice and compensation for these people. End of!!

There are some disturbing stories here and people are rightly upset, but I think folks should take on board what David Goodheart is saying here rather than being used by C4 and David Lammy to score political points by making this a race issue. Seems the media (especially C4) always use the race angle since Brexit, but most regular people know it's not (bar a few idiots) though it sells a story-a divisive one.

That has nothing to do with this particular topic, other than these people have been caught up in the illegal immigrant deportation targets. The clue is in the *1995* part of the Barcelona Agreement.

What smacks it all is the fact we pay all this money to become British and the homeoffice don’t even stick to their deadlines their own time frames if you pay for a service you expect them to at least give a response when they publish that they will. They say 6 months but in reality your waiting for 2 years.

David Lammy was right. the amount of money the Home Office takes for an application is absolutely extortionate! The cost of renew your status is around £1000+ If you need to call the Home Office during the process of application, you pay for the phone call. 5 mins call is around £12. Emailing is not also free. This is what people have to go through.
