Glad you made it back! Had some sketchy situations like that in the past. Two things to do when overpowered: Lower the boom clamp to make the sail easier to manage. When you waterstart, I couldn't see, but when really overpowered you can have both feet (especially your rear foot) in the straps so that you don't get yanked over right away. In fact, you can waterstart with both feet in the straps and still stay very low to counterbalance the sail until you're ready to hook in. I've done it quite a bit.

First glad you made it back safe scary to be in those conditions. I always recommend to people practice derigging in the water and paddle back to shore. You never know when you may need to do that. Also, know when to ditch a rig if necessary it can be replaced but your life can't. Third never sail farther than you are willing to swim/ paddle. I have had a mast break on me and one side of my boom suddenly give out so I'm familiar with having to self rescue. Valuable skill to practice as one day it may save your life.

That's correct. I run frequently in similar situations where I usually ride. Very very gusty side-on that sometimes doesn't look so strong from the shore... I'm surely much worse than you in planing technique, but I have an enormous amount of fast tacks on my back, and those save me every time I find myself in the chaos.

Fast tacks are essential learning. Keeps you upwind
@EasyGherkinTV2 ай бұрын
I always tell people, "you have to earn the right to go upwind." You need to get planing first, then point upwind. You can't go upwind when you're not planing with strong winds and chop. It will just keep blowing you downwind. Getting planing means bearing off. I know it's scary, but you have to go downwind, get the board planing and then you will be able to go upwind. After you waterstarted, if you'd got the board onto the plane, I think you would have made it around the reef.
@stratosmuse2 ай бұрын
Precisely!!!👏👏👏 I was afraid to head a bit downwind or even beam reach and start plaining. Thank you for the comment!

@@stratosmuse I should explain, because it appears you may think I'm having a dig at novices. 'Slogging' is a technique most used by wave sailors (but all windsurfers can benefit) to get upwind in non-planing conditions. You stand further forward (front foot on the mast base, back foot close to the front straps), rig forward, arms extended and sail sheeted out to the point just before it starts getting back-winded. Like this, you can point higher than if you were planing. Obviously you don't go as fast, so whether it's the most effective method depends on a number of other factors (tide, chop, gustiness, etc) but if you can do it well you'll often find that it is. Planing is by no means the only (or best) way to get upwind. Oh, and slogging can, of course, be used in all wind strengths, not just non-planing conditions.
@stratosmuseАй бұрын
I was wondering for a long time, how do you (wave guys)manage to return upwind after 1 wave Riding for 20-30’’ almost going downwind slaloms. So, I’ve been aware of this technique.It is still impressive that you have the energy to balance upwind. Thank you for the explanation!

A few advices: - wearing a helmet in a red/yellow colour always help to be identified from the distance - try to waterstar faster or haul the sail if you do not have enough experience, it will avoid the board to drift with the current - never sail alone!

I know it is easier said than done, but I think you should have picked a bit more speed (maybe not as far as planing) in order to make ground upwind more efficiently. At those lower speeds you think you point upstream more but in fact you drift a lot sideways. Picking more speed also reduces the strength of the wind on the rig.

Hello, fm what we can see in the nice video the wind was very light so you took a strong risk to head out with this conditions. If my understanding is correc this wind was fr 120+ slalom board (so that you can head upwind) and 7.5 sail to at least be able to sail a bit. In addition as I too windsurf in in Greece, note that when southern winds are blowing the air is not so condensed as in the Northen winds which means that you should increase yr sail size in relation to same conditions with Northen winds. Hope cold help a bit. Wish you safe sessions ahead.

Fortunately, everything went well and you are healthy. If you are overpowered, the board will be greedy upwind. You're drawn to the wind. The windward greediness increases if the sail pressure point is too far back or too far out. Start with a small sail, get bigger is always possible.

Next time if you wanna go upwind, make sure you plane first and speed, then you can go upwind more easily. You have plenty of space to do that, though it seems like there is non. hard to hold down 6 m^2 in 25 kt even going upwind I guess. And so much falling and waterstarting will eat up a lot of distance downwind to make it challenging to make progress upwind. I've had sessions like this with stronger than expected onshore...you have to really be on your game to make it work. On the other hand, if it's sideshore even stupidly overpowered you can go out a mile and come back without so much trouble. Just my opinion.
