A walkthrough can only show so much. There's no way to show everything in a single one, as a lot of things are randomly determined. This includes voice lines, some environmental sound effects (rocks whispering as you pass by them), the floating ghosts in the background in some places, etc. I actually played each level a lot of times (more than 40 times for the fourth part) to get what I deem the best set of lines and random events that I wanted to show. Anyway, glad you liked the walkthrough.

A N A T H E M A Game? This is game? Like, I have feeling, even in 3dmark 2005,2006, you can do more stuff than here. This is not game. It's basicaly 3d engine and world presentation, map, with story. It's not a game. This should not be called game. I would call it presentation. You cannot change here anything. It's linear. It's short. You cannot collect, fight, basicaly you cannot do nothing here. It's just a story. Like short movie, in 3d engine. Presentation of graphic. This should not be called a game.

I don't understand why Dear Ester gets so much hate, it's an interactive mystery novella... Personally, it's one of the most immersible games (not in the conventional sense) I've ever played. The scenery and setting is beautiful for a game developed on the Source engine. The story's fascinating, and the soundtrack is incredibly powerful.
@Louicanthrope9 жыл бұрын
There is VERY little interaction and clearly, Dear Esther is too expansive for such a short story. It is barely one hour long, even if you take your time to visit the whole island. Which is often useless. I mean, doing it is not going to give you more information. Although the 'levels' are incredibly beautiful. All that you stated, you can find in Amnesia A Machine for Pigs ; ok, except for the scenary. The writing is fantastic, just as poetic ; the soundtrack is of the same quality ; there is a lot more interaction and the game is about eight hours long. Plus, it is visceral : to a certain extent you can really identify to the character you are playing as, at least you can feel like you are walking around and running away and taking the blows. All of this for twice the price of Dear Esther : not much if you consider what is added compared to that short story. Everything you said is true, Dear Esther is undeniably beautiful and well written ; it is simply not worth paying ten dollars to complete the whole of it in one hour. Even to compensate all the hard work they have put into it, even if the setting seems so lively. Even if it is well written etc, do you think purchasing a fifty pages novella for ten dollars is worth it ? Especially if you can buy a masterpiece of ten fold the number of pages for the same price, maybe even cheaper ? Dear Esther is more of an experience of the senses than a game. Reason why it would have been a great movie ; filmed like "March of the Penguins" using the codes of the documentary film to show all the scenary, emphasizing the silence and peacefulness. It feels to me that it would have worked best this way.
@melvinthedeathless9 жыл бұрын
The reason is pretty simple, it's over-hyped title that masquerades as a game while lacking any form of gameplay elements. If anything, the fanbase is pretty much responsible for the backlash, they up-sell the game, labeling it as a unique, a "must have" experience and then aggressively downplay any form of criticisms, calling its' critics unsophisticated. Then "Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs" came along and demonstrated the developer's total lack of respect for gameplay mechanics, which further intensifies the hate towards the dev and the dev's past work.
@fuzzballfoxonionring67299 жыл бұрын
Charlie Martina I think you mean immersive. The game isn't immersible, at least I don't think it is, but then again I haven't actually tried dunking it in water yet. I would imagine it doesn't work though.

Indeed.One of my most favorite games.This game didn't let me sleep for some days.You just have to find out what happens and keep asking yourself more questions, which brings out more mysteries and more questions.I think developers did a good job.

Qwokey The game offers very little interaction and aside of its beautiful visuals and the music it has close to nothing going for it. It's basically a nice looking walking simulator for people who can't leave the house or have no interesting nature scenery for miles. If I went outside while listening to an old audiobook I could have the same experience (minus the caves - for those I might have to drive somewhere else) for less money.

Dear Esther is beautiful, in both looks and narrative. Playing though it for the first time with no knowledge of the game, it could appear boring. I knew very little about it when I first bought it (when it had its first release on steam) and was expecting jumpscares all the way through but nothing happened. However, after the game ends you have the "what just happened?" thought, which you just cannot get with any COD game. You play again knowing the ending and realising that everything the narrator says is metaphorical, that this could possibly be yourself on your death bed, for example the reference to driving up and down the m5 21 times but he cannot find the location and that there are no marks (terminal illness with no cure??) which puts a completely different spin on the whole experience. Yes, it many not have action or even much interaction, it may not be a 'game' in the traditional sense. But it is, if you have any compassion, an experience that will remain in your head far longer than any COD game.

This is only one interpretation: (SPOILERS) I think this whole journey is merely the narrator under anesthesia before he.. passed away. He was getting his kidney stones removed. His wife visited him often, but one day, there was an accident. On that same day, there was a complication to the operation. In his comatose state, he overhead the doctors' mention of his wife's death. Inexplicably, the narrator dreamed up the island that represented his body, in all its decay and health issues. The "ghosts" he kept seeing were really the doctors and nurses he saw in his drugged delirium. And names like "Paul", "Jacobson", and "Donnely" were names and surnames of his doctors. And these gulls could represent his family (kids and grandchildren perhaps) who will survive Esther and the narrator.
@GirtheAlienGoldfish8 жыл бұрын
+team10leader1 Actually, I think you may be right. There were drawings of neurons and chemical formulas on the cave walls. He most likely had Alzheimer's.
@susanobrien43808 жыл бұрын
+GirtheAlienGoldfish Really? I read it as he and his son were in a fatal car crash, hence all the rotted bits of car and suitcases all over the island. For me it felt like he was in a coma or on the operating table and the island was his dream/hallucinating as he was at the brink of death. The 'game' was his journey toward death. Beautifully haunting experience though not sure I'd call it a 'game'. :)
@GirtheAlienGoldfish8 жыл бұрын
Susan O'Brien I disagree, but the story is linear. It's gonna be a different interpretation for everyone.
@susanobrien43808 жыл бұрын
And I disagree too. I saw no indication of Alzheimer's but it's a free country and we paid for the game so we can interpret it whatever way we like! Have fun!
@NanakiXVIII8 жыл бұрын
+team10leader1 I had hear some people interpret this game as that his wife got into a car accident, and that Paul was the one involved. Which would explain the paragraph where he says, "I met Paul. Although he knew that I hadn't come in search of an apology, reason, or retribution, he still spiraled in panic. Like us, he had already passed beyond any conceivable boundary of life." The last sentence could be interpreted to mean that Paul and him had possibly met while they were each trying to recover in the hospital.

So if anyone is interested, keep an eye for a sale. The stories it tells are great, the music is amazing, and the island is such an interesting and beautiful place to explore even as dead as it is. For the haters and the lovers of this beautiful masterpiece. Haters are gonna hate. Sorry to give it to you guys. I understand the mentality though, some people need to have more interaction for something to be "fun". So a game such as "Call of Duty - Black Ops 2" would be considered fun to someone. Others don't need that much interaction to classify a game as fun. So people who play "Dear Esther", would also love playing "Journey, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, and Everyone's Gone to the Rapture". Me, I think they are both fun. I've played "Minecraft" and I think its one of the best games I've ever played. I've also played "Skyrim" and the graphics are amazing. But the best game I've ever played has to be "Age of Empires III". To those that don't know this game. Its a strategy game, basically a much better version of Clash of Clans. And its a mostly historically accurate game. With historic soldier units such as Dragoons, Musketeers, and Grenadiers. Love it, check it out!

You know I hate to compare a masterpiece to a Roblox game but I once played a game similar to this, you were in a lucid dream and in total darkness minus a small glowing ball of light you would follow and listen to while you climbed up a hill. Idk why but I’m just reminded of that lol.

I think it's one of the songs from the soundtrack, which can be found on Spotify. It may be "The Bones of Jacobson" or "I Have Begun My Ascent", but I may be wrong

I feel like they could've done more with this than what they did. Like help the ghost cross over, be able to pick up objects, no game over, but just more than walking, it doesn't have to be a horror game
