What a stunning video, John! Your friend, Cody, certainly has one of the most impressive wine cellars in the world. The size, the capacity, the layout, the organization and system, the wine collection (ohh, the wines!) including his most special ones, the design, the style, the elegance-this wine heaven is absolutely breathtaking. Magnificent cellar; fantastic video; really great interview! It’s not just a wine cellar; it’s like a passion project. Incredibly fabulous. Thank you for sharing this with us, John and Cody! Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it! Great question! The lighting is all LED lighting, which does not harm wine because it does not emit UV rays or give off heat. Great video, great wines, great talk. I just cant believe that living in central Texas with a cellar woth several hundreds of thousands of dollars he doesnt have a backup power generator! If he has an emergency in the middle of the summer and has no energy during 2 days he is puting his collection at a huge risk. Heck, his very simple solution is to buy a minisplit of 18,000 btu and buy a 5,000 watt portable generator and have that minisplit used ONLY when there is no power. Less than $2,000 for everything and he can have peace of mind.

Great question! Unlike some red and white wines, Champagne can be stored standing up at least for a couple years. I ask this question frequently when I visit Champagne houses. They still recommend laying Champagne on its side if you will hold the bottles for more than 2-3 years. I have about 2 cases of Champagne standing upright in one of my cellars at home and have never had any problems with it. But I have much greater space constraints than Cody does.

@AttorneySomm4 ай бұрын
Yes I can certainly understand those sentiments and mixed emotions. I did think this was a good opportunity for an educational video for those building wine cellars. The same lessons learned can be applied to cellars built on a smaller scale as well.
@ricknelsteel4 ай бұрын
It’s all down to budget. I live in a 3 bed semi and I’ve 400 bottles secreted in every available orifice. It’s amusing that people in the USA build a wine cellar in the middle of the house to show off their best wines with the appropriate lighting and Europeans hide theirs in a cellar underground. Could be because the USA has never been invaded by neighbours or because it’s much cheaper in the long run to dig a hole in the ground. Economics and anthropology in motion.
@AttorneySomm4 ай бұрын
@@ricknelsteel Thanks for weighing in. I definitely wish we were able to store our wine underground. That is possible in some places in the U.S., but not in Texas. Here we do not have basements at all and my backyard is solid rock. I plant trees using a pick axe.

Cody has been collecting for more than 20 years. Many of the most expensive wines featured were purchased at much lower prices many years ago. Burgundy, for example, was available for a small fraction of today's prices at the time we started collecting.
