I'm guessing used for if the cork has the potential to break up into the wine... I don't know anything about wine tongs to be honest A thought on handling hammers, I tend to fit the handle to the head first and then do all the finish shaping afterwards, that way I can copy an existing handle on another hammer or make a unique one tuned to that particular tool Most of my handles are different because I finish shaping them all after the head is on (even the bought ones), its by far the best way for me to make comfortable working hammers.... I've had one or two people pick up my hammers and puzzle about why theyre all different but its nothing more complicated than tuning them to my hands and work style. I once made a left handed axe for myself and was very surpised to find that the handle was almost a complete opposite of the same sized right handed one. I'm ambidextrous with many tools so while I expected a difference I wasn't expecting a near mirror image.

Very cool, but I still don't get the appeal or need to cut the bottles. I guess I am just too simple, lol!

I would guess that you might use hem on a broken cork
