After a year, I made a stop in the Bordeaux region, specifically in Saint-Émilion, known for its tourism, to have lunch at a famous restaurant. Is it taken over by the British? There seem to be only British people everywhere. However, these British citizens are all experiencing hardship at this French restaurant.

They came out on a huge tray cover in ice and beautiful flowers. I exclamed, Oh how pretty! And took a picture and the man that brought them out mocked me and made fun of my excited expression. I actually prefer when the server tells me to come back in 15 minutes because they are at max capacity right now, rather than sitting down, getting your order taken and then having to wait without knowing why its taking so long for the food to get served. Thanks for your understanding guys ! I am french and people don’t quite understand the french culture. When a customer enters a restaurant they can spend hours and hours there without time limit, the server are used to that and they prefer to shoo away customers than to ask a customer who is sitting to go away. Restaurant doesn’t earn that much because of this. They couldn’t hire more employees. Employees will get tons of stress and depression became a part of the society. When there is depression, it is hard to get employees.😢

Hello, just to explain the sandwich experience. French child often experienced bullying at school for trying to speak english to "well". In France there is something like an "angryness" to people who just want to speak proper english. At school, classmates will just booh you or just mimic you in à funny way if you try to do THE accent (the basic english accent we learn). So for the student there is à "désamour" to learn the langage properly. We often just shut our mouth during oral tests at school just not to be bullied. So yes it was like that during my school time (2000-2015) but in faculties this becomes less normal, as you go to harder and complex schooling french learn english. This lack of english practice is also due to quitting school soon or not doing à "great" school career. You can also say that we are rude because we do not like you to talk ans other langage than french in France (there is à litteraly an expression that says "In France we speak French" even french use it to other french when they do a bad sentence or use an "anglicisme") yeah we are rude but I think a lot of french People are ashamed to not be able to speak english, so they prefer to not try and use the fact that you are tourists to be bad manered. Also and last point, in france everything is dubbed in french. We are used to it, there is great french actors who dedicated theyre entire carreer in dubbing. So again, no real langage barreer when you go to the movies or watching à tv show 🤷‍♀️ Sorry for the long post and the writting (not my best I'm best at speaking 😬) Hope this help ! 백종원씨가 이야기 하기를 식당 밖에서 줄 서서 기다리는 것과 일단 착석해서 기다리는 손님의 마음가짐은 완전 다르다고 합니다. 여기는 야외 테이블이니 이야기는 좀 다르겠지만 손님의 심리가 일단 착석하는 순간부터는 손님들의 조급증은 가속화 된다고... 일단 요리를 소화 할 수 있는 테이블 만큼만 받는 게 혼선도 줄고 손님의 불만도 줄어든다고 하네요. 그리고 유럽 실내 분위기 좋은 식당에서 식당직원이나 주변 사람들이 쓰레기 처럼 쳐다보면 본인이 후루룩~ 쩝쩝~ 소리 내면서 먹고 있는지 부터 살펴야합니다. 한국의 전통 식사예절도 소리를 전혀 내지 않는 식사하는 것이었는데 일제강점기를 거치면서 힘든 시기를 넘기며 이러한 정통 식사예절이 없어진 가정들이 많아지고 최근 먹방에서 소리 내면서 먹는 것이 일상화 되면서 해외에서 쓰레기 취급 받는 일들이 늘어나고 있어요. 아시아인 인종차별이 아닌 기본 테이블 매너 때문에 무시 당하는 것은 아닌지 먼저 살펴봐야 합니다.

Aw I knew exactly how the sandwich story was going to go haha. I won't go to france unless with my Swedish friend. If we interact with people in french and they get the sense we're British making mistakes in French will be poorly tolerated, if we let our Swedish friend speak first it'll be assumed we're all Swedish and our presence is treated with more kindness and tolerance. Unfortunately those experiences in France are frequent enough that without pretending to be a different nationality it can be an unpleasant trip.

I agree that wine is not really what the UK is known for, I hope you explore different drinks we do export like ciders and beer though. I admit Guinness is not very good, but for some reason it seems to be popular, but there are better options we make. Watching this kind of infuriated me, especially the story about the British couple your wife helped. The majority of French people understand basic English, there was no reason for that server to deny them, we do not treat French people badly in England or any of our neighbouring countries most of the time so there is honestly no reason for the bad blood anymore. Nothing has happened between England and France in a long while, it's not that difficult to just be nice. Joking is fine, but blatant discrimination is not. I would have gotten angry like the lady in the orange shirt too! I hate this kind of treatment! I would have been sure to complain and throw every curse I knew in French at them. Eating out in France seems like a nightmare for everyone.

How about you learn a few words of french next time you come and visit ? We are your next door neighbour and yet the overwhelming majority of british (english) tourist can't even speak a word of it, nevermind a few sentences... Also, it doesn't help that the British (english) tourists have the worst reputation of all tourists in europe, I have experienced it myself firsthand; most of the english tourists are loud, rude, entitled, get drunk (and dont handle it well) too often, and expect everyone to speak their own language... I mean in this case how is this okay that this couple who lives on the other side of the planet in Korea, speak french very well when most british (english) who literally live next door cant speak a word of it? Seriously ? Maybe you guy's attitude needs fixing first, then we can talk about ours. Cheers.

Don't worry we (french) don't hate british people (except in rugby). It's even the opposite side, we really enjoy the sense of humor of our fellow neighbors. Most of the France countryside is crowded by retired english people who bought and renovated old barns and I think they enjoy their life among the dirty frogs. We also encountered rude servers in our own country despite the fact that we speak the same language. Boorish people could be find everywhere especially in touristic and crowded stressful areas.

As an english speaker to our slight defence, when we go to france if the server thinks we are english they will speak to us in english no matter how hard we are trying to speak the language 😅 i speak conversational french to a moderate degree of fluency and i still get spoken to in english about 50% of the time. Its better outside Paris and other big cities though. However there are lots of British people who go to france (and anywhere in the world really) and make 0 effort at all to try and learn, so i understand the frustration. I think the bad attitude from the french towards us arises from the attitude of our tourists rather than any ancient history.

I tried to a beer in French. Not most difficult of phrases. Got shrugged at like I was speaking Russian. And they think brits are rude, France is the worst

흥미롭습니다. 저도 영국에서 거주할때 프랑스 여행을 가 본 경험이 있어요. 역사적 골은 물론이거니와 영국의 클래스에서도 프랑스 사이 전쟁에 대한 교육을 받은 기억이 나네요. 그 덕분(?)인지 프랑스는 유독 영어를 달가워하지 않는 문화가 형성되어있고 무엇보다도 자국 문화 자부심이 과하게 형성되있죠 친절과는 거리가 멀고 더욱이 정치로 표현하자면 점점 좌편향 되어가는 기세이기도 하고 가끔 반면 한국의 문화에 비하면 과한 업무 스트레스와 대조되어 프랑스가 좋아보이기도 합니다. 종업원 중심의 고객님이 아닌 여기 내 집이야 우리가게야 마인드가 근무자에게는 더 좋은 조성 환경 같기도 정답은 본인의 자유이지만 프랑스의 선진문화 즉 먼저 나아가는 문화와 자유를 존중하는 탈유교 마인드가 가끔 그리워요 😊
