When I graduated form McGill University my graduation gift from my mom was a trip to California. The idea was to get on The Price is Right. What a graduation gift! I think it was for her more at the time... but thats ok.
The is how the story goes. Being from Montreal, we sent away for studio audience tickets. The first day at the show my mom and I stood in line and we were interviewed by the producers. The entire studio audience was interviewed one by one. You had 5 seconds to convince them you would be fun on the show. I tried to be sophisticated and classy. That didn't work! I was not selected to be on the show the day. I guess I was too boring!
We skipped the next day and went to Universal studios instead.
Our strategy changed for the following day! I remember one of the producers was watching the people lin line. (Phil) I acted wild and crazy in the line this time and he noticed. I was so shocked to find out I was picked when they called out my name! What a thrill!!!
It is totally legit! I had no idea!!!! By the way I still have the prizes won!
Great time! A wonderful memory with my mom. Cant believe how young I was at the time.I still have the prizes and its been 40 years. Bob Barker was wonderful!!!
Susanne.

@@JohnDoe-cu2hl No The Best!! Popping in the Plaid!! I didn't realize how long he ran this show Oh My!! I remember watching it in the 70's there was a guy who spun and won 1,000 then he spun again and won 10,000 I can't even imagine in today's money how much that must have been in 1976 I love that the people were truly "average" , not made-up for the show at all. Just being themselves and trying their luck. No big introduction or matching outfits...just go for it.

We weren't simple back then, we were the exact same human beings that they mint today. But there was still a sense of innocence in children and not every little thing was politicized. It was not a simpler world, but things were easier. You didn't live just to pay bills and the wave of American progress hadn't yet broken on the beach and begun rolling back, that's the 90s.

Later in 1980, the spot price on gold went up to that sub $2000 level. This was evidently filmed before that short lived spike. People were selling jewelry to pawn stores and the like. There were bicentennial gold coins made by the US Mint that were melted down by folks who had them because the price of gold had shot up way beyond what they paid for them. The mint made a 16.8 oz gold bicentennial medal in 76, showing how cheap gold was before the 80 spike. It featured the Statue Of Liberty on the front and the presidential seal -- heraldic eagle on the back. The spot price of gold beyond that burp in late 80 had remained stable all the way until the early 2Ks. It takes many years between spikes (1980 and 2011 were the last two as your proof). There was a spike in 2011 that brought gold to 1900 an oz and it never sunk back down to its 2002-and backwards levels (save for 1980 spike). Silver at some point in the 90s was worth only 4 bucks an oz. In 2011, silver spot price went up to 49 an oz. On 6/2/21, gold is at $1917.80 an oz and silver is at $28.33. Palladium is at $2895 an oz, right after the US Mint began producing palladium bullion coins. Platinum is at $1206.80.

I enjoy watching these older episodes, reminds of how life used to be. Just a fun loving, enjoyable time when people got along. The world changed so much in the last few years. RIP Bob, you were a class act.

I wondered if there was going to be a car in the Count Basie showcase, since he didn't have a driver's license. He did play a mean jazz piano. Glad to hear that your prizes were of high quality, Susanne, and still bring memories of that wonderful day with your mother. Thank you for sharing this.

There’s some episode where the theme bass be so cranked up you could barely hear the synthesizer notes.
