Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape to grow, but when this grape is made correctly through all of the difficulty it is unparrelled in excellence. In this video, I am reviewing one of the best selling Pinot Noir wines in the U.S. We will be reviewing the 2015 Meiomi Pinot Noir from California. This wine is trying to reflect the coastal regions of California and it is a blend of Pinot Noir from different coastal counties. It posses medium ruby color, medium+ intensity, pronounced palate intensity, less than medium acidity and off dry sweetness. Its sweetness bothers me a bit and with low tannin its flavor doesn’t come up so well. Watch the video and see on your own if this wine showcases the coastal terroir of California.

0:03.2 welcome to episode six of wine to our in today's episode we're gonna be looking at the number one brand of Pinot Noir in the u.s. may owe me peon waar in 2015 this brand was sold to constellation
brand wine brands for 315 million dollars stick a minute and talk about Pinot Noir so Peter noir is obviously a red grape it is a thin skin red grape and because of that thin skin is sometimes lower on medium to low on tannins and you know lighter on color it is often usually
0:55.0 grown in cooler climates it will have medium to high acidity one of the things with the grape that most growers will tell you is that it's very hard to grow and it's very finicky and either you know be have issues with frost or things like that but it can also all the way out to from the vineyard all the way into the cellar when there when the
winemaking process is happening any little issue and any that surfaces will be reflected in the wine that's what that's what makes it interesting now may owe me means coast in the tribal
1:27.6 language of the wobbu native americans that were original inhabitants of the north northern california area including Napa the reason this wine is named Maya Mayo me is that's meant to highlight the coastal regions of California so each year this is a blend and in varies year to year of pinot noir from different several different counties so Monterey County Santa Barbara County and Sonoma
County so let's talk a little bit about
1:55.6 this bottle so this is labeled as a California bottle California wine it's not a specific location since it is a blend of three different counties Monterey County Santa Barbara County and Sonoma County in each year it varies from bottle to bottle but in the 2016 it's about 60% Monterey 23% Santa Barbara and 17% Sonoma County now the goal is that in the blend that each of these counties represent a certain flavor profile and when they all come together that these coastal counties make a a holistic improved wine that is
2:32.2 enjoyable for the consumer there is a lot of this wine made in 2015 who is projected to make seven hundred thousand bottles that's a lot that's that's why it's an the number one selling this bottle retails for around $20 making a good Pinot Noir that it reflects its place for sub $40 is very very difficult let alone for $20 one other thing I wanted to note is that this wine is labeled s Pinot Noir but by California labeling laws that means that has to have at least a minimum of 75% of that grape in order to have that on its
3:03.2 label now that means that some years it is in some years other grapes can be blended in to accentuate or highlight certain flavors that they need it's not very clear from the text sheets on the Mayo main website about what is actually included in these in these bottlings it never says 100% Pinot Noir but never tells you what the breakdown is I have seen other w

There's a reason why Meiomi is hated by wine professionals. It's because they know that it doesn't taste anything like Pinot Noir, that's its a recipe wine, possibly made with added color, sugar and oak chips, that it's over priced and that one can drink way better wine for money.

It's a just OK red wine but as a pinot noir, it's straight up plonk. I'll never know why so many people seem to love it. You can find much better pinot noir for about the same money. Just to name a few pinots in that $20 range. All entry level wines from Burgandy. 1. Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2. Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge (Usually $22-25) 3. Danjean Berthoux - Bourgogne Chaume Ronde

Meiomi is a wine that Somms and industry pro's love to hate. I think you did a great job of not totally bashing it and looking at it objectively. Yes, it is not a "true" representation of Pinot Noir. Syrah is rumored to be the mystery grape component giving it more body, more ripeness, higher alcohol, blue/ black fruit components, that mixed with the baking spices you mentioned tastes like fresh baked pie, who could say no to that taste flavor profile! It's ok to like this wine but I agree, Its too manipulated! Pinot isn't supposed to taste that way. J Lohr and Hess make Central Coast Pinot more affordable and more authentic.

Horrible wine! Over oaked recipe wine! Many cheap wines from California are like this, you don't get decent Pinot Noir for $20. Educate your palate this is not good wine, but if you like it drink it.

All the Meomi wines are excellent but the Pino Noir is my favorite. Served cool, it’s excellent with dishes you’d usually drink a Chardonnay with. I’ve NEVER seen it for less than 24 on sale from 27.00

I am not a fan of the wines. I think they make a wine that has a tailored flavor profile, but not necessarily what a good example of those grapes actually taste like. Simply put there is a lot of manipulation

@@WineTerroir New Zeland pinot noir that costs ~ $11 is an excellent wine compared to Meiomi. Few days ago I ordered a glass of Chianti at Olive Garden and they brought me Miomi without telling me. I sent it back because it was like Pepsi with alcohol. They said they didn't have Chianti and brought a "similar" wine ) I guess 90% of Americans wouldn't notice.

I had this wine for the first time last night and made almost all of your conclusions about it. In the end, my main beef was just that it was too much like many standard none Pinot Noir reds. In a blind tasting I would not have guessed this was a P.N.

Then I would say it is a blend and not Pinot, Pinot is medium plus at a max if anything. I would personally say medium is as far as I would go then it defeats the purpose then I would have a bold fully oaked Cali Cab. Thanks for commenting back. I liked the video 👍

I've had wines that cost everywhere from $20 to $250 a bottle, and frankly, this is my favorite wine ever. I'm a big fan of Pinot Noir in general, and I really think that for someone like me, this is a really accessible wine that a lot of people will like. I get a little black cherry from it, a little coffee/espresso out of it, (and I love espresso), and I sometimes, depending on how I'm feeling, I think, a little dark cacao chocolate out of it. It's peppery without being overpowering. My wife and I have a Nespresso machine, which can produce a very strong, very powerful espresso, and more than once I have compared Meiomi to my espressos my Nespresso machine produces (and I love my Nespresso machine so much that I bought another one so that I have it to travel with because I didn't want to be without it). It is very much a full bodied wine to me, while being smooth and not too dry. I really mislike dry wines. I don't get any of the artificial cherry flavor out of it that the guy here was talking about, but I do understand the Coke comparison, although that's certainly not overpowering, and it isn't something you wouldn't really notice unless you were looking for it. I told my wife a few weeks ago that it reminded me of a peppery, more full bodied Merlot, which I think is a good thing. I never worry about what someone thinks of what I'm drinking. I give it to my clients every year, and my clients always thank me and they love it very much. I think in the end that it's a matter of personal preference. I've been drinking Pinot Noir for a very long time, and this one is my favorite. Good review overall, although I thought you were a bit harsh on it. No worries though.
