Interesting and in-depth video about Austrian black grapes and red wine. This might be up for debate or controversial, but according to Caroline Gilby in Decanter 2021 Sponsored Guide Hungary she says that "It's (Blaufrankish/Kekfrankos) parents have been identified as Heunisch Weiss (Gouais Blanc) and the rare Zimmettraube Blau, and it's origin as today's Slovenia, an area that was once old Hungary". I haven't tried that much Austrian Blaufrankish, but everyone does rave about it, so I am thinking that it must be pretty good. On a side note in the Finger Lakes it is also called Lemberger and in Washington too, if I remember correctly. I have drunk more Zweigelt, and political and ethical considerations aside (Fritz Zweigelt was an avowed Nazi) they are quite enjoyable. I have tried a few Sankt Laurents and found them to be very interesting, definitely Pinot-esque but with more spice, floral notes, and smoky in some instances. Surprisingly one of the Cabernet Sauvignon that made a deep impression on me was from the Burgenland. The Kaiser Cabernet Sauvignon Kastanienfass 2008. It had sage, bramble, savory, herbs and was rather floral, a big of a surprise from CS and especially from Austria. Once again thanks for this video and looking forward to the next one. Cheers!

What was known as the former Jugoslavia got territory from Austria, and especially Italy and Hungary, though no one knows what they did to deserve it except Woodrow Wilson and his Democratic clones after the Second World War. They also claim that Primitivo is theirs though it is most likely from Southern Italy. Starting about 150 years ago it was the primary grape for home made wine amongst Italian-Americans and a few others like the Gallos and the Mondavis and they were not from Jugoslavia.

Hi Allan, Primitivo has been shown to originate in Croatia and was probably introduced into Puglia in the 18th century.

Well, Jimmy, I enjoy your channel very much, but I more was addressing the cultural appropriation and ethnic cancellation of my people. And wine is just a part of this. The language of Illyria and then Croatia was evolving from Latin to Italian before the first Slavic invasions of the 7th c. But, it took hundreds of years before they began to push out our culture and language. Much of the Croatian littoral was Italian speaking until the early modern period when in the 20 c it ended in genocide. Thanks to ampelography we know with certainty what historians can only debate. Case in point is Aglianico long thought for etymological reasons to be of Greek origin. DNA proves that wrong today. This area was part of the Venetian Republic for over one millenium with the cultural influence going "mostly" from one direction not the other. Can historians show it was not planted in Apulia before a certain time or in Croatia before that? Are there in fact Croatian texts which support this if so I should like to know. This is not to mention brandies etc. from there which were of Italic origins as well, though most don't know this. Thank you Jimmy and the next time you enjoy the Croatian littoral thank Italy nor Belarus.
