i do not believe you. My daughter had nothing wrong with her except she couldn't sleep. she was put on Saphris - a new antipsychotic - now she has parkinsonism, a permanent and serious movement disorder. yes- maybe it is less common in the newer ones, but it still happens and she was not even told. You should not prescribe ANY antipsychotics to people unless they are suffering terribly with psychosis and feel that taking the risk is worth it. in our case, we were not even told about the risk. it is garbage to suggest that these drugs are ever safe.

I'm sorry this happened to your daughter. It is the doctor's fault if he had not mentioned the side effects of the drugs to pay attention to. If you don't mind me asking, was your daughter treated for bipolar disorder? How old is she?

Is it Parkinsonism or Tardive Dyskinesia? I'm sorry for the problems your daughter has had. My son was "hit" with Schizophrenia when he was 16. It's like a chemical bomb went off in his brain. Extremely bright, and a piano prodigy. He does nothing now, and has become an addict as well, so he has what doctors call "dual diagnosis." While I agree with your statement on prescribing antipsychotics on a "whim", we found that we had to stay on top of the drug scene by doing a LOT of research. I'm sure you have too. I don't know you but I can pray for peace, comfort and healing for your daughter and your family. What we've gone through has literally been hell on earth and my wife and I have aged from it. Not to mention that his life has essentially been ruined.

In reality new generation antipsychotics don’t do anything much for negative symptoms of schizophrenia. It’s just a selling point of drug companies. Also there isn’t any reliable evidence that they don’t produce just as much EPS. In the past I’ve been on both typical and atypical and atypical cause just as much EPS and I would have even said they cause more of it. Obviously drug companies want to market their products so they claim it does things the old ones didn’t, but there claims are based on very low quality studies. Studies that cannot reliably be trusted.
