Maybe an alpha kink. Also, something I just realized that I should’ve noticed earlier: Toothless and other dragons have fire proof scales to protect there skin. And that ice is probably WAY below 0 degrees Fahrenheit so he was originally either warming up his body when he was IN the ice or he already was awakening his alpha mode and warming up and preparing his body for the cold when he was diving to protect hiccup.

And in RTTE (Race to the edge) toothless and the other dragons and hiccup and his gang barely wore any cold protective gear because Vikings live in cold climate mostly. And dragons heave strong scales that can help with tight turns. And what if the alpha mode came out because of toothless relationship with hiccup and the urge to protect.

I think that alpha dragons are born alphas but have to unlock their full potential in a time of need, so when hiccup is in a life or death situation, some of that alpha power pushes to the surface (like in the first movie) but now that the other draons respect him he's fully unlocked his alpha abilites. (Just a theory i heard, but it explains a lot)
