Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Germans did not call the P38 a forked tailed devil. It was the Japanese.

Damned shame we don't have the kind of design and engineering today the US had back then. Could you imagine what we could achieve with today's CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) power and engineering abilities? Takes a war to have this kind of engineering power show up. Too bad we can't find a way to make it work in peace times. We could be exploring Neptune by now!
