Her voice is so one of a kind!! She defines the word 'unique' vocally! And then there's her guitar playing, also unique! And on a steel 12-string which is once again, unique! Put it all together and you have a musical gift of the highest order!! Thank you, Fil for bringing her to us as only you can! You are also a gift to us!

Learning about how accomplished and generous Joan really is was as great as having that amazingly complex playing sorted out for us! What a great career she's had!! I see the brother (Tony Armatrading) who suggested she play a few covers to draw people in, (and then wow 'em with her originals), on TV here in the US quite a bit and he's had a considerable film career, as well. Pretty talented family! This was all in all a totally wonderful analysis video, thank you!

This is excellent - re-introduce Joan A. to those who may have missed her. Another person you might look at is Boz Scaggs - live footage from as early as 1971, and an excellent live concert from 2004. He is someone who people may need a re-introduction to - his new album is "Out of the Blues" and it is great, imho. He both plays guitar and sings.

November 1975 - went to see Supertramp at the Birmingham Odeon. They were pretty good, but the support act, an unknown artist by the name of Joan Armatrading blew the roof off the place. Thank you for this great assessment of Joan's guitar playing. I'm surprised you didn't mention the phaser effect pedal she is using (you can see/hear her switching it on in the full video), which is very clever in that it adds texture and a third dimension to an already very rich sound. It does take the sound to another level. I'll venture to guess she uses it to fill out the sound a little more to substitute for the full band (rhythm section, piano, backing vocals) that is in the album version. For those who are interested in streaming this on Spotify, there is a similar version of this song, from the same year, on the Live in North America set).

Great choice! I listened to "Me, Myself, I"--every song of which is fantastic---a lot in 1984-6. What a voice and instrumental talent she is. At the time...and to this day, I felt she should be as big as the Pretenders or Heart. I wondered what became of her and then I saw her on Jools Holland a few weeks ago so I guess she's ok.

Nice one, Fil! I have been a Joan Armatrading since 80/81 after hearing her on a radio station one night. I got to see her in 83 and then again around 95. I always got a Stephen Stills vibe off her acoustic sets, the way she layers melodies over and under the basic rhythm with an aggressiveness that makes it blend into a solid sound that surprisingly counters that aggression into some fun. I used to put her albums on just to figure out different rhythms on my bass because, for me at least, her playing lends itself to so many counter-rhythms for the bottom end... Keep it up Brother!

Thanks, Fil. I always liked Joan when I saw her but didn't get a chance to explore her as an artist--didn't know she could play like that. Speaking of artists who could play multiple instruments and make albums by themselves puts me in mind of Todd Rundgren.
