This episode is dedicated to Air Force and Army Veteran and CO Fire Aviation pilot Marc “Thor” Olson, who lost his life while serving as a tanker pilot on the Kruger Rock Fire on November 16, 2021.

New fire conditions call for new firefighting methods and tools. Looking at Calfire, we learn how the largest municipal fleet of firefighting aircraft in the world has developed over time. Live data feeds revolutionize how firefighting teams understand fires and communicate during missions. Colorado gets ready to purchase its first Firehawk helicopter, and interagency teams coordinate at the local, state, and federal levels. The challenges in fighting wildfires are greater than ever, but with new methods of fighting the fires, so are the opportunities.

I flew 60s in the Army, and have a few bucket missions in my 21 years. The main reason California has so many fires, is the environmentalists lobby don’t allow the forestry service to clear he dead areas. In the winter, the burned areas enhance the flooding possibilities. Until that mindset changes, the cycle will continue

The Huey was a Working Bird, it took on it's toughest jobs from out of country operations, to it's homeland of the states. The Firehawk took up what the Huey couldn't handle anymore, landing in rough terrain and fighting fires faster. The two birds are Mothers, keeping it's flightless safe. Wires are way harder to see under ANVIS... do not buy them thinking they help you see wires at night better than you can in the day. They don't.

Considering this season's fires in the US & Canada it appears that we are not prepared for the future... Unfortunately we need an order of magnitude more of firefighting equipment & personnel to prevent mass casualty events from smoke inhalation. And no, I have no stock in these suppliers, or other self interests. I just realized that within a few years, the total acreage of land susceptible to fires like California has to fight will increase by at least an order of magnitude...

10 Tanker Air Carrier as I THINK 4 DC-10s. Sadly the 747 Supertanker is no more. It wound up being sold and converted into a freighter :(

Counties around the world use the CL415 water bombers to fight fires, and they are considered one of the best tool to fight fires, why is the United States not buying them?

The CL415 is a specific tool for fighting wildland fires. The Firehawk is more versatile for counties and cities as it can be used for rescue operations and hover fire fighting. So it is just another tool. I do agree the CL415 is a great fire bomber.
