I think the only time I truly appreciated Eric Roberts as the Master was when he was in the ambulance with Chang Lee. Master: What are we waiting for? Lee: The road's still blocked. Master: ... This is an ambulance! Lee: Hey, man, when I get all that gold, you know what I'm going to do? Master: I don't want to know. Lee: You kill me. Master: ... You want me to kill you? Lee: No! No, I mean you make me laugh, man. You're a funny guy. Master: I'm glad one of us is amused. Lee: Hey, look, cheer up, man. You'll get your body back soon. We're a team, right? Master: Yes, we're a team. Like, this is the first and I believe only time (in the TV series, at least) that the Master has had a "companion" in similar style to the Doctor, and already he's regretting it.

I feel with the exception of a tv season with McGann as The Doctor, not having a 4th season with Capaldi as The Doctor and Gomez as Missy as his Companion (along with Bill and Nardole) will be the biggest "what if" missed opportunity in all of Doctor Who! Seriously, that would have been the perfect team since (to paraphrase what Missy said in The World Enough And Time) it would have the tragic hero (Capaldi knowing this would be his last season), the romantic foil (Missy trying to be good but still having the temptation to be evil), the exposition (Bill whenever they would travel across space and time), and the comic relief (Nardole just being Nardole)!

I just wish he had more TV material so we could see the amazing cloak and make-up that was put into the costume. 3. Anthony Ainley - a far more sadistic take on the character. 4. Edward Brayshaw - we could argue all day about how the War Chief is or isn't the Master, but I think he is, so there. And this guy absolutely kills it in The War Games. 5. Derek Jacobi - THIS is what the New Who adaptation of the character should have been! 6. Eric Roberts - extremely charismatic, and he brought out the character's more gentlemanly side excellently. Plus, he and Chang were a priceless double act. 7. Alex MacQueen - perfect nemesis for Paul McGann. 8. Peter Pratt - his performance was good, but the mask kind of ruins it. 9. John Simm - terrible in the RTD era, but he always gave the performances his all. The Doctor Falls was his best appearance by a long way. 10. Michelle Gomez - she always put a lot into her performance, but she's *nothing* like the character is supposed to be. It doesn't help that 90% of her appearances are just small cameos.

Sorry apart from Roger Delgado my favorite is John Simms in the RTD era which was a brilliant Tony Blair parody and on modern politicians. Intelligent and great on the Dr Who and Master's contradictory relationship which is the most involved of them all. Yes the very short Derek Jacobi performance is epic and should have been longer. All the others are at best mediocre versions of better ones (Delgado) with only Anthony Ainley pulling it off convincingly.

I agree with your list except I would swap John Simm and Michelle Gomez. I know a lot of folks say that she isn't 'Mastery' enough which is fair enough, but I feel as though her character through the series was more solid than John Simms, who, lets face it, has had 3 variations on the same character? First it was the mad politician, then the hoodie wearing people eater and finally we have the most Mastery version that appeared in World Enough and Time when he was in a Delgado/Ainley phase. I don't mind that they are different because it gives depth of character, but I dislike how the changes occured offscreen meaning that each time we see John Simm we don't know what type of Master hes going to be if that makes sense. Whereas Missy had a story arc of her own but we saw her changes on screen which helped them make more sense to the audience.

It's an interesting argument. I'd put the Gomez master below Simm because although what you said is true, I never liked any of her characterisation. I didn't love any of Simm's different versions too much either, but I thought they were each better than hers.

I think Missy was perfectly cast. Michelle Gomez can be very menacing and you can really see that in the new Sabrina. However, the character is just so lackluster. She spends less time actually being menacing and cunning, and more time being silly and bombastic. It’s not scary crazy, it’s almost pantomime. She keeps talking about being the Doctor’s friend and having a past with him, but they don’t do anything interesting with it. The redemption arc was all-talk and no-show. Her gender was clearly not the reason her character didn’t work, but I reckon it’s more to do with how Moffat writes female characters.
@HazarTulum6 жыл бұрын
I remember reading something in Doctor Who magazine that said "The obvious thing to do would have been to write a female Master as an "ice queen"; cold, calculating and arch, the sort of female villain we've seen a hundred times before. But instead he wrote Missy as **completely batty."* I just can't help but think.... what?! An ice queen would have been BRILLIANT! You know the reason we've seen those sorts of villains hundreds of times before? Its because they work. They are menacing,. they are threatening, they're dangerous. They're not dancing about with Daleks -_-. I think that after Simm's portrayal, nobody really wanted a crazy over the top Master to appear next. Even as someone who personally ranks Simm higher than most other Masters, I didn't want another crazy Master! Hopefully we'll see Missy in more of a villainous light in Big Finish, maybe tone her down a little and not have her try to subtextually fuck the Doctor in every other scene she's in.

@DPS317626 жыл бұрын
I pretty much have to agree with your ranking, and the logic behind it. I will point out that Anthony Ainsley is on record as saying he was always told to camp up his performance, and was never allowed to play the Master the way he wanted except in Survival. I'm pretty sure Delgado was directed to be campier than he would have preferred as well (though obviously he wasn't as campy as Ainsley) and I strongly suspect that part of the reason Roberts was so campy was due to the direction as well.

Where the New Series, went wrong with Missy isn't in the gender switch, Michelle Gomez was a great choice, but it all came down to her motivation. The Master's main drive has been his lust for power. Master-it's in the name He/She's a control freak with a God Complex. What defines the character is the arrogance, the sense of entitlement that I think partly comes from his rank as a Timelord. John Simm acted a bit (well a lot) more crazy but he still had that arrogance and desire to rule the universe that defines the character. Missy wanted to show the Doctor they are not so different- that sounds more like Batman and Joker than the Master and the Doctor.

From worst to first: Roberts Beevers Pratt Simm Ainley Gomez Delgado People complain about Gomez not being “like” the Master, but I never thought the burger-faced incarnations were much like Delgado’s Master, either. And then with Ainley we got an inferior Delgado impersonation, which to me established Delgado’s Master as his definitive personality, although sometimes Ainley’s impersonation worked pretty well (Logopolis). They missed a real opportunity to combine Ainley’s Master with the Black and White Guardians in a single episode. That could have opened a wormhole into a whole new dimension of camp. Gomez and Delgado were consistently a delight to watch, which I can’t say about any of the others. And I appreciate them trying to do something new with Missy, even if it didn’t work. When Simm was good he was great, but then you had Emo Master, which was a train wreck and - again - nothing like the Master. At least Ainley never delivered any performance that grating. If Simm returns, it might be interesting to see him play a post-Missy “reformed” Master who tries to achieve good ends, but thru bad means. That could be a different spin on the character.

Anthony Ainley (At first he came off as a campy imitation of Delgado's Master which is pretty much how He was instructed to play the part, but in the later episodes where the production team had given him a little more freedom to make the character of the Master his own, He was really very good, one of the more intimidating and menacing incarnations) 2. Peter Pratt / Geoffrey Beavers (Fascinating concept and very well portrayed by both actors, but I actually prefer Beavers take overall as I feel he more successfully captured the sheer desperation and ruthlessness of this incarnation, there was also something really creepy about the he moved.) 1. Delgado (Just brilliant, it's very difficult to make a villain so charming and charismatic but He pulls it off effortlessly and The dynamic between his Master and Jon Pertwee's Doctor was just perfect.)

And I feel Gomez would have been better suited to the Rani character! Your spot on when you say she doesn’t seem evil or threatening at all! I read somewhere that moffat wanted to bring back that friendly rivalry that Pertwee and Delgado had, which would have been great if he did it right! They went over the top and made the master into a parody of him/herself! At least Delgado was always out to beat the doctor, he’d always have a threatening plan that the doctor had to it an end to! Missy just came across as cringey, not evil!

Was the whole point of The End of Time/Missy not that the Master no longer wanted to kill the Doctor anymore? Hence why Missy is never, really, evil? Admittedly this doesn't really work anymore with Simm coming back, but still.

My favourite Masters are: (worst to best) Eric Roberts Michelle Gomez Peter Pratt John Simm Alex MacQueen Geoffrey Beevers Roger Delgado Derek Jacobi The top 3 are super close, especially Delgado and Jacobi, my reason for a lot of this list is Big Finish which does a massive service to all the Masters - it’s the reason for Jacobi being my favourite Master

I’ve never got the hate for John simm. I always thought everyone loved him until recently seeing loads of hate. I’d possibly put him in my second or third place if I’m honest. I thought his over the top portrayal was so dangerous and fun and works so well in contrast of the doctor. Especially Tennant. Like there is that fear the doctor has of knowing he can’t really tame him or control him. Despite also never wanting to stop him for good

Love the list, mine is pretty much the same. John Simm could have been great in End of Time if he wasn't trying to be Skeletor. And I think Michelle Gomez would have made a fabulous Rani or Romana, especially with the friend route they took in the show.

Quick question Wingy about John Simm, have you seen some of his other works like the recent TV dramas he’s starred in? And will you do a video or two about them? Because I really enjoy him in just about everything I’ve seen him in :)

How can i fin the doctor who classic episodes. I am from spain and i can't find them here
I'm gonna add Big Finish into this and count Pratt and Beevers as separate. 8) Roberts. Obvious but I think he was too camp and he let the movie down. I blame him for lack of McGaun series. 7) Pratt. Needed more as he isn't in the single episode he appeared in. Visually arresting but a bit shallow. 6) Gomez. Should not have been the master. I agree with Alex's point of her being a great character but not great master. 5) Jacobi. Just a bit bland for me. Too similar to Delgado. 4) Ainley. Quite hit and miss but I loved his sadism that has been ramped up. But often a bit campy. 3) Beevers. I hate putting him only at three but in my opinion almost every story he's in they constantly bring up the fact the Master is dying which grates on me. But his performance is stellar. 3) Delgado. YES YOU HEARD ME! MY OPINION! Brilliant master and he's completely iconic. I just prefer others. 2) Simm. A great Master who had such presence. Every episode he's in is a complete classic and I love his amazing performance. 1) Macqueen. Great master and he's so brilliant in every story. At times funny and campy then a moment later terrorfying, so multilayered.

From Best to Worst... 1. Derek Jacobi (Big Finish War Master is Epic) 2. Roger Delgado 3. Geoffrey Beevers (Big Finish mostly) 4. Anthony Ainley 5. John Simm (End of Time not good - “Dinner Time”...😱) 6. Peter Pratt 7. Missy (too “good”) 8. Eric Roberts (love the TV movie though and Paul McGann is my favourite Doctor if you include Big Finish. This Master way too Camp though...😱)
