The Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz is the 4th stage of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour. The 10-player tournament takes place in the St. Louis Chess Club from 10-14 August. The prize fund is $150,000, with $37,500 for 1st place. 7 tour regulars, including World Champion Magnus Carlsen, are joined by wildcards Leinier Dominguez, Yu Yangyi and Richard Rapport.
The rapid section on the first 3 days is a single round-robin with a time control of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second delay from move 1. The final 2 days are a blitz double round-robin, with 18 rounds of 5+3 blitz. Rapid games count double, with 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. A 2-player tie for first will be decided by a 2-game rapid mini-match (10+5) and, if necessary, an Armageddon game (5 vs. 4). Official website: grandchesstour.org

Mvl won the last game against levon but Levon still managed to win the tournament after yu yangyi drew his game with shah (shah helped levon win the tournament and they both had a chat after he was declared the winner and both of them were happy)

@@sumukhhegde6677 i dont know if we can blame this one on experience, i just think things like these happen because of the time format, i have seen the live footage and so many players had their hands shaking (even magnus), i think blitz has way more psychological warfare than classical time format, i always saw their hands trembling, when they either were done on time to a few seconds or didnt know what to do in a position, even when it was won for them, u also see way stronger body language, e.g. aronian's head shaking in his last game against maxime, which he lost, stuff like that doesnt happen in classical, btw even maxime (a very experienced player) missed an "easy" winning move in one game against aronian i think, as i said i think he missed the mate bcs of imense psychological pressure and not bcs of inexperience, u can argue the bad handling of psychological pressure is the outcome of missing experience, altough i think u cant have enough experience to withstand this pressure, since everyone in this tournament fell victim to this element

Norway chess federation had the decision of which city to put the 2020 World champion match, and didn't choose Magnus's hometown Oslo, so Magnus threatened to not even compete. Well the other city withdrew, so that is all settled, but there is more. Magnus started a chess club, personally paying for 1000 federation memberships which may let him send 40 delegates to some chess Congress to influence voting. Also there is something about sponsors with ties to gambling, which has legal issues in Norway... so Tuesday the president of the chess federation announced an investigation into the legality of carlsen club and sponsorships... I think...

#Suggestion Yu Yangyi would have forced a playoff if he won his last round game against Shak. He was on 21 points going into the final round, he missed a bishop move to the H file which would have forced a winning endgame. He would have forced a playoff if he won that game, just so your followers know 😊

Actually Yu Yangi drew his last game against Shakhriar although he had a winning position at some point. I guess Levon got quite lucky especially considering how he won his blitz game against Ding Liren, but as they say luck only comes to those that push for it :)

With Magnus, there's what it is that's on his mind and there's how it manifests itself in his play. Antonio talks about the first of these. The second, and the one I'd be looking at if I was Magnus' coach, is his propensity to accept isolated pawns. It's a pattern throughout all of the losses I've seen on this channel. In one game he even has six isolated pawns! Isolated pawns can be a good weapon (in Magnus, case because it means there are half open files on both sides to attack down) but this might be a time to go back to basics and stop trying to demonstrate that isolated pawns are not always weak.

Actually Yu Yangyi could have forced a play if he had won his last game against Shak if Aronian lost and when Levon lost his game against MVL Yu's game was still going and he was completely winning only he didn't realise it and couldn't find the right plan to draw the game and gift Levon the first prize.. Such a wild wild card this Chinese!

Pardon the inexperience, but @7:30 what is wrong with Nxb6? Wouldn't a similar line happen to the one that Antonio just showed, except the fork is happening horizontally instead of vertically along the a file? You're bringing your knight back into the game, removing the defender of the bishop, and if bishop captures, Rc6 wins back the piece (either bishop moves and black loses the knight on a6, or black loses the bishop on b6). The queen cannot defend bishop from either dark square diagonal as the rook would cover the d8 and the d4 squares. The only reason I think to not do this is that the past pawn is dangerous and black might ignore you, but your only hope is to bring the knight back anyway, right?

well mvl's rating was way above everyone's except Carlsen's in the tournament, and the k factor in blitz is much higher than classical, so every time Maxime lost a game against Levon and other 2700 blitz players, he would lose 15 points per game lost and gain less than half of that per game won
