Winner of 'Alone' Season 3 - Zachary Fowler Interview

Zachary Fowler won $500,000 on Season 3 of History Channel's 'Alone'. He lasted 87 days all alone in the wild of Patagonia. He had to build his own shelter, find and cook his own food and water and fend off bears, wild boar, pumas and poisonous mice! Fowler was able to last longer than the other 9 contestants to win the $500,000 cash prize! Fowler talks about how to win alone, survival skills and bush craft and more in this interview.
Unfortunately the first few minutes of this interview did not get recorded (I swear I pressed record!). The following is a brief summary of what was lost.
I started by thanking Fowler for joining us. I mentioned his website www.fowlersmakeryandmischief....

We briefly discussed his KZbin channel and it's success before and after his appearance on Alone. Prior to the show, he had under 80 KZbin subscribers. At the time of recording this video he had over 70,000! He talked about how the show has helped get his channel out there as well as how the grand prize helped him buy some new gear and gave him more time to put into building his channel and his website. He now does KZbin full time to support his family.
When Fowler was selected to appear on Alone, him and his wife had been raising their family in a self-sustained manner on some property that Fowler owned in Maine. They had a trailer and a yurt for the family, as well as animals and gardens and many hand made gadgets that Fowler designed and constructed himself to help solve various everyday problems. While Fowler was away for all that time, winning Alone, his wife grew tired of tending to the property and animals herself. His winning the cash prize was a welcomed opportunity for the Fowlers to leave that lifestyle behind and move into a bigger home with some more of the mainstream amenities. As Fowler put it, "momma wanted a bigger house!" They still own the land and that is where Fowler does much of his building and shooting for his KZbin Channel.
Next we discussed where Fowler learned all of his survial and building skills. He explained that everything he has learned over the years came from books he collected since his childhood. He would collect books on various topics and skillsets from thrift stores and garage sales. He talked about how he would go to these garage sales and thrift stores on a saturday and buy a new book, then go out the next day and practise what he read. He had books on everything from spotting and eating wild edibles to primitave bush crafting skills. All of the skills used to help Fowler last 87 days alone came from reading those books and dealing with his everyday life on his property.

First of all I think the way to win is to have the mental strength, Physical outdoor stamina, the extra weight to live off when the food sources is low or becomes scarce from the wild life leaving the area and the cold sets in. Being knowledgeable on only being able to use 10 items the show will allow is the only way to win. Knowledge of how to set traps and get the best out of the fish. Everything Zachary was and did.
