Winning the Battle of Life (Kurukshetra Within Me) - Part I | Swami Smaranananda Giri

This is the first in a series of inspirational talks on the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita as it has been interpreted by Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in God Talks With Arjuna, the great Guru’s divinely inspired translation of and extensive commentary on this beloved scripture.
The speaker is Swami Smaranananda Giri, a long-time sannyasi and current vice-president of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, the organization founded by Paramahansaji in 1917 to disseminate his Kriya Yoga teachings in India and neighbouring countries.
Paramahansa Yogananda (author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi) interpreted the Bhagavad Gita with divine insight, exploring its psychological, spiritual, and metaphysical depths. He revealed the innermost essence of this majestic scripture while presenting an enlightening and deeply encouraging guide to who we are, why we were created, and our place and purpose in the vast cosmic scheme of things.
In this talk Swami Smaranananda Giri elaborates upon Paramahansaji’s commentary, explaining through analogies and anecdotes how the presence of Kauravas (bad tendencies) within us impedes our spiritual progress and how nurturing the Pandavas (good tendencies) within us will eventually bring about the defeat of those Kauravas in the inner battle of Kurukshetra, thus leading to the attainment of the ultimate goal of Self-realization.
In his “how-to-live” teachings, Paramahansa Yogananda has given to people of all cultures, races, and creeds the means to free themselves from physical, mental, and spiritual inharmonies - to create for themselves a life of enduring happiness and all-round success.

I first tried reading Bhagavadgita in 1990s when I was in my 20s and I couldn't understand a word of Sanskrit. Later in 2000 bought a English version from ISKCON which I was able to understand a little bit couldn't cross 100 pages. Just a month back bought this set of two books,by god's grace am able to connect with each and every word in it. Now YSS coming out with a youtube series is another blessing. I never took a great liking to the drama of Mahabharatha, although I am born a Hindu. "Stories there are many, but what of them?" I used to think. My first Gita was a pocket edition from ISKON when i was 19 years old. I used to underline important lines and ponder about them. I remember my classmate saying, "At this rate, you will have to underline every word, because each line is loaded with meaning." Then, as a young devotee on this path, I had to read Guruji's 2-volumes of Gita from cover to cover, for a summer task, during my holiday in Ranchi. My young mind in early 20s, could not gauge the depth of this holy scripture then. But i noticed that my consciousness changed totally, by the time i finished the scripture, after a month or so. I have revisited the book after Swamiji's talks, because he makes it so practical, so livable and such intricate nuances of sadhana are explained with such simplicity that I am in love this scripture, again! Swamiji is the most precious gift to YSS and the devotees. The truths in these talks were lived by Swamiji himself for the last 30 years or so and that is why they touch our souls when he speaks.
