Hi! Why am I not uploading anymore? I'm currently busy with my last year of a nursing degree as well as commissions, and unfortunately simply don't have the 20+ hours a week it takes to upload videos to KZbin. I plan on making more videos once I'm finished with my degree (summer 2020). More info can be found here: twitter.com/ClaudiaSketches/status/1181656975769313289 I'm still uploading relatively frequently to my facebook, twitter and instagram- and upload as timelapse videos there- so be sure to follow me on these platforms for more content and information :)

Winsor & Newton have just recently started putting out marketing material about these pencils- and additionally I got some more objective information about their lightfastness ratings! Apparently all pencils rate I or II (which I assume to mean ASTM I or II, but need verification on this). More info can be found in the blog post linked in the description.

Yes, they are ASTM | or || as I asked them recently about lightfastness. Also, I received an email from them a couple weeks ago that the studio collection pencils are now available on their website too. xx

Cute ladybug! I didnt realise the swatch/test cards were that tiny until you moved it closer to the camera 😂😂😂They are soooo endearing! Even if these are student grade pencils, they look really nice when you tried them out on the different paper... I kept thinking they look like pastels. Love working with the 48 set. Was told when I contacted them they would be adding their lightfastness ratings later. Trying to see if they are well recieved. Also bought mine on Amazon. Bought at a great price but now they've raised the price thats steep. Loved video. Also had some colors that turned to dust. They did replace those colors.

Thank you very much for letting me know that you purchased them on Amazon! It's been a while since I checked their availability there. I'm always very skeptical of companies that talk about offering up their LF ratings later. I've heard similar tales about the Tombow Irojiten, and after a very long time, people are still waiting on the LF ratings (at least from the last time I heard.) I also can't help but feel that this means that the LF ratings are an afterthought, which doesn't fill me with hope. I guess we'll see though- perhaps I'm just being too tough on them! Interesting that some of your colours were crumbly. Are the replacements much better? Thank you very much for watching and commenting! :)

Thank you :D Any pencils work well, but I'd particularly recommend using pencils that are quite opaque- at least for base layers- to get good colour saturation. With translucent colours (e.g. most polychromos), the tan colour of the paper will show through and influence the colour.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy my videos and you flatter me by saying that I must have decades of experience! In all honesty, I only began pursuing art seriously in early 2016, and took up coloured pencils the same summer. Although I don't have many years of experience, I admit that I have dedicated a lot of time and research in the area and continue to do so- I easily get obsessed with such things and have to try to know everything there is to know! As for sketchbook tours, I'm afraid it's unlikely that there'll be one at all this year as I don't create sketchbook work (aside from materials testing/swatching)- I just don't have the time for it and would rather invest that time creating fully polished pieces for videos or commissions. Although it's not a video of my collection of art, my instagram and facebook contains photos of the overarching majority of the pieces I create. That being said, I do have a couple of videos you may find interesting if you haven't yet seen them! Here's a tour of my sketchbooks and portfolio from 2016-2017: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2PVpp-brcdroM0 Here's a flip through a small sketchbook when I was in my early teens, during a phase where I enjoyed drawing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5nLioFne7Fgfqs

I was also surprised when I first saw them in the spring, when somebody on an art FB group asked about them. I didn't realise that Winsor & Newton made pencils- and given that they are a reputable brand I just knew I had to try them. I agree that they're student grade, although their pigmentation and laydown is great, and very similar to Derwent's Coloursoft- which in my opinion are professional grade (although on the lower end of the spectrum). In that sense, I think if they had lightfastness ratings, I'd consider them artist/professional grade too. The Zest-It pencil blend works just the same as OMS or paint thinners :)

Even though it would probably make for much more repetitive videos, the thing i find not tested enough with cheaper pencils is the ability to create portraits. Drawing things based on primary colors evens the playing field too much.
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 5 жыл бұрын
I'm a pet portrait and wildlife artist primarily- I don't enjoy drawing human portraits, so I can't imagine I'll be drawing any for future reviews. In addition to this, realistic looking skin is challenging enough to render with a large selection of pencil colours- being limited to 12 bright colours would be very time intensive. I always choose a subject matter that I'm inspired to draw given the colour palette available. Sure the ladybird's shell is mainly red, but it's not only red- I used all 12 colours in just the red part :D

They are definitely a student product imho - hence why “studio” is in the title, and why there is no marketing pushing them forward as had these been produced for archival fine art pieces, there would be advertising everywhere and all relevant info, so I think Winsor and Newton stating artists quality without giving LF info is more about the overall quality rather than a selling point. I agree colouring book use and journaling is the best use though if you swatch them and leave in the window for 6 months you would get a better idea about LF ratings.
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 5 жыл бұрын
I've never really considered "studio" meaning "student grade"- as a descriptor it doesn't seem to be consistently used, or have consistent meaning. (E.g. Derwent Artists & Studio contain the exact same formula, and both have pretty iffy lightfastness ratings). It makes sense in this scenario though, although it some of the other packaging claims do seem to confuse matters. It'll be interesting to see how the product develops- if they do release larger sets (like they say), and if better marketing of the product line follows. I'll consider running some LF tests on them next year- it's too dark now! :P Results from a home-test certainly wouldn't be the deciding factor for me to use them on important pieces though- any tests carried out as home testing isn't reliable, but it would definitely give an indicator for how well suited they would be for projects with a limited shelf-life (e.g. card-making). Thank you very much for watching and commenting :D
@Kyomiibrown
@Kyomiibrown 5 жыл бұрын
Claudia Sketches Thanks for replying Claudia 🙂. I always take “studio” to mean student grade in that the LF ratings will be iffy and basic, irrespective of what the company may state. In a nutshell, I have yet to find a “studio” labelled product that is suitable for archival fine art ;). I hope that’s clearer. Derwent - IMHO - have always been student grade, but the better end of student grade though recently they are upping their game which is good to see. I think for the *current* price point of the W&N, Polychromos are a better option, at least until W&N decide to get the relevant LF info together. I always watch your videos because you are so thorough and fair in your assessments 🙂
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 5 жыл бұрын
Your "nutshell" is certainly true for me too- or in some instances least the lightfastness ratings of many "studio" products are a mixed bag (e.g. W&N Cotman "studio"). I agree that there are many other brands that out compete this product currently. Polychromos are always the pencils I recommend for this price point (lightfast & highly versatile). I think Coloursoft or Prismacolor Premier are good alternatives if soft wax-based pencils are somebody's preference (not as LF as Polys, but still reasonable and affordable). Thanks again, and I'm glad you think my videos are fair and thorough! That means a lot :D

Hi everyone could anyone reccommend relatively affordable colouring pencils that are super creamy and opaque? I have Derwent drawing pencils I love their creaminess and I need a similar effect but in more vibrant colours sadly they have quite a limited colour range I would really appreciate it!!!
@ClaudiaSketches

If Lightfastness isn't a concern for you, Prismacolor Premier. Soft, creamy, pretty opaque, usually affordable. Derwent Coloursoft is another option (especially if you're looking for better LF ratings), though I find Premier blend and layer a little better :)

When a company advertises a studio product its generally considered in the art world to mean student grade. W & N are well aware of this fact so to put studio on the box it says it all without needing to try them you know these are not artist grade.

And yet bizarrely on their social media they told me that all of these pencils score an ASTM I or II- which would indicate to me that they're trying to be artist grade- though I've yet to find any specific information for each pencil.

Love your truthful tutorials, was at the range today, because it didn't have much information about them I didn't buy them

Glad you enjoy my reviews :D I love The Range, they have so many art and craft supplies and are very reasonably priced. I was umming-and-ahhing when I saw them too, for exactly the same reasons!

Are you still going to make videos?
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 4 жыл бұрын
I'm currently too busy with my last year of university, commissions and my health to make videos. Most videos take 20+ hours to make and it's just not feasible for me to set time aside to make them under current circumstances. I plan on making more in the future when I have more time to focus on them. :) In the meantime I suggest checking out and following me on my social media- I share what I'm currently working on there!

@@b1gn3ll Thank you! In my opinion the only added challenge of being self taught compared getting lessons is that when you're self taught you have to find the learning material yourself. With the internet, that's not all too difficult- there are so many fabulous tutorials online as well as lots of brilliant online art groups who are ready and willing to help you out and offer critique! Keep up the good work, stay determined and passionate :)

Nope, still uploading to my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram though! :) I'd love to make videos again in the future, but right now (between an intense uni degree, commissions and my health) I can't afford the 20+ hours a week they take to make.
