Almost. The badger (or similar) brush which appeared at the end is a big part of the process, though usually a mop is used rather than a fan. It is _never_ stroked across as done here, but lightly bobbed up and down on the surface, patting the colours together while at the same time removing any brush marks. The same technique is often used to control glazes; the gentle dabbing _lifts_ the glaze to the degree required. The mop is dipped in acetone (filthy stuff - ventilation!) to clean it, since when shaken vigorously the badger mop dries almost instantly and the brush can be used again at once. Have been surprised at the inadequacy of many of the new W&N 'Masterclass' (pardon!) videos.

Well as you seem to be a self appointed expert, maybe you should consider starting a KZbin channel. Those who can do…..those who cannot

I always enjoy vid demonstrating the canons of painting from the Renaissance! I wish the video showed the results more clearly as in sfumato result by glazing and with the modern method. Maybe more time off camera then close-up POV? But thanks for this video which wass very helpful.

So it's basically just color blending with a fancy name 🙄

Yes, but if you know how to use this well (the thin layering) you'll create almost 3D paintings. It's what Da Vinci used. If you ever see the real Mona Lisa in person and stare at her enough you'll see the impact it has

Layering vs blending. Blending includes edges or mixture of a color, layering is use of many colors placed atop each other, transparently in wash, typically... the technique gives more depth to the skin, pushes light into play, not just color. 🤔
